ok. I had the same issue. Sent it in once. Broke again, second time I got a new slim. Was talking to someone last night who said his PS3 fixed itself. he gave it a week and popped a game in.
No it wasn't 1 was.No. You'll be completely lost. If you want to understand more, MGS2 is the most refered to in MGS4.

I was in the same position. I went on eBay and got Metal Gear Solid 1, finished it and loved it. So I thought what the heck, and got MGS2 as well. Played it, finished it, loved it. So I would recommend getting 1 & 2 - I haven't played 4 yet so can't say if they have a huge influence or not, but just because of how awesome both of the first two are I'd recommend getting them. When it comes to 3, I didn't like it, so I'm not going to finish it. I bought MGS4 on eBay having played 1 & 2 - I think 1 & 2 are the main ones to play as 3 is set in the past. I'm sure if someone had finished 3 they'd know more going into 4, but I wouldn't imagine it to be fundamental to the story.

Itmakes references to MGS1 the most. And 3. It only really talks about 2 when Otacon is talking about his step sister and comparing her with Sunny. You should be alright but you will be lost when they go on a tangent about the philospohers legacy.
References to 3? Anything important to understanding the story? I'm sure after playing 3 you'd know more but is it side-line stuff that isn't too important? I just can't get to grips with 3
Big Mama. Big Boss. The Whole 3rd act story wise..Itmakes references to MGS1 the most. And 3. It only really talks about 2 when Otacon is talking about his step sister and comparing her with Sunny. You should be alright but you will be lost when they go on a tangent about the philospohers legacy.
