I wonder how well a PC would run modern games with a cpu and gpu equivalent to the 360's, and 512mb of ram? It wouldn't run at all. Yet even though the 360's specs are EXTREMELY dated compared to todays modern PCs, it's still able to deliver a SIMILAR experience with the games.
So the next gen console specs might look "dated" to a PC gamers, but in reality those consoles will be able to pull off amazing visuals.
And before anyone even starts, yes I have a decent rig that I regularly game on.

They don't really at all though. The equivalent PC tech, a radeon x1950 pro graphics card has shown comparitively good results compared to the Xbox 360 in Crysis 2 for example (there is a video on youtube). The difference is marginal and often completely overstated. This is because the resources used by an OS on the average PC of today % wise is significantly reduced compared to the past. PC gaming and the way PC gaming works has developed enourmously in the last 5 years.
As for a "SIMILAR" experience. Well that would depend on how you define similar. We are looking at a bargain basement gaming PC that is delivering a higher resolution, better settings and a framerate of at least double in modern popular multiplats (this is a significant factor in terms of gameplay). That's a substantial margin. When you start to talk about high end gaming PC's, the disparity becomes almost comical. Resolutions using double the number of pixels and more, running at double the framerate and above, alongside numerous graphical features consoles simply can't offer. There is a huge gulf. The point of this post was to demonstrate that almost the lowest end gaming PC performs in games multiple times better than either console of today.
The next generation of consoles, I hope is good. It's a positive for every platform if they are as multiplats will be able to take advantage of better hardware. However with the current rumoured specs it would seem that they may be embarassingly underpowered. A 6670 utilised within console hardware would not even be close to comparable with a current mid range gaming PC of 2012, nevermind 2013. The next generation of consoles needs to be far more powerful than they are rumoured to be. Or the gap between PC gaming and consoles will become absurd.
The PC with the x1950 actually ran Crysis 2 better than the 360. So there goes the optimization theory down the toilet.
