Im just curious as we close in on the launch of the WiiU and are a little over a year away from the supposed launch of the next XBOX and PS, I was wondering at what point are any of simply going to say that consoles are too expensive and switch over to PC gaming? For me personally, I will not ever pay more than $399 for any console. That being said, I dont see any way that MS and Sony can possibly release their respective new consoles to compete against gaming PC's at a consumer friendly price. Im betting that each of these consoles will retail at a minimum of $499 and that will blow up in their faces. What are your thoughts??

Over £400 ($600) would be considered as expensive, but I bought the PS3 at launch because of a significant feature it has; Blu-ray.

I bought a PS3 at launch and that was just dumb on my part. Never again.

I'd say $500 is my max limit and the console better be VERY impressive with a VERY impressive line up to match. Even then it would be a bit much.

$400 = £250.

Really? I personally think it's too low. Think about the hardware. You don't want a crap hardware, do you?

Paid 6 bills for my PS3, would pay a grand if the system was good enough. Obviously inflation and economics change everything and anyone who gives a blanket price of xxx amount probably isn't taking that into account.

I consider Gaming in General an Expensive Hobby.

Whether it's PC or Console.

399$, would not even consider anything even more expensive than that.

EDIT: That is the core console at it's lowest price, bundles and such with games might convince me otherwise.

I bought my PS3 at $299. I would CONSIDER $399 if it was is a big enough bump up, or has a significant feature (i.e. a 4K blu-ray player). I think $399 is about the max I would pay. I don't think they will up the ante in prices for next gen. I do think the current consoles are a dubious value at best right now. But when the next gen refreshes come, if they can basically get mid- to high range PC performance for $399 that would be a strong value.

Really 399.99, the problem is how long this gen has lasted everyone is used to cheaper consoles.

I pade full price for a 60gb PS3, and even paid for repairs on that one after YLoD and a replacement a couple of years later. Similar tale with the Xbox, but with less up front and more in repairs.

I've spent WAY too much damn money on systems, I can't control how reliable they are next gen, but $400 is the max limit for me now, especially since 2006 was a time when the economy didn't go down the crapper yet and slowly, slowly build up.

I think Microsoft may be onto something with their subsidized console sales scheme. I mean, we do the same thing with cell phones, which are infinitely less useful than a complete home entertainment system(at least the PS3 was). So why not with consoles?

Yes, over time it costs more, but the buy in is so cheap that it will simply be to tempting to pass up for Joe Consumer.

300 dollars is the absolute ceiling, meaning you'd better impress me if you expect me to drop 300 dollars. I paid 250 or less for all three current generation machines.

I already have a PC for PC exclusives and multiplats so I'd say 300 dollars max unless the console has a really nice set of exclusives.

This is my price point as well. If next gen offers a contract plan where I pay it off over a year or so I would be willing to go to $500.

$500 is my limit on the PS4. It seems alot of people want the tech of consoles to improve but don't want to pay for the increase.

When are people gonna realize people game on consoles by choice? When are people gonna realize that there are games on consoles that you can;t get on PC and those console games resonate with certain people more than what the PC offers?

I don't plan on buying another console until the PS4 is $300 or less and I don't buy games until they drop to $30 or less. A lot of times I buy used games. My most expensive PS3 game so gas was $25 and I have 14 games. With all that said......Why do you feel the need to pick sides. I refuse to pick between PC and consoled. That's why I own both a PC and a PS3. You have fun with your limited game selection. With a PC/PS3 combo, I have access to 99% of all that games this gen that I care to play.

At launch, the only one I would pay for was the Wii. PS3 was ridiculous, and the 360 was too high too. Maybe Nintendo are going at the right speed, making the HD jump now.

Anymore than that and I'll just do my shopping on Newegg/Tiger Direct for PC parts.

I don't know. I'd say it totally depends on what's in the box. I would give up PC gaming and buy a $1500 console if it was something truly spectacular.

The PS3 was way too expensive and overpriced when it released though. Both the Cell and the BD were only jacking up the price without being useful (for games). If I buy an expensive console I want state of the art stuff, things that really matters like a high end GPU (680 or 690 GTX) coupled with the latest Intel CPU.

is there a limit to console price because consoles are not upgradable? to me its too expensive when the cost of the console is above my price range and/or the gaming library is not up 2 par. i don't want to pay for a console only to play 3 games...its why i didn't buy the wii despite it being cheap

Above £350 is too expensive, i usually dont plunge til 2 years into a gen by that time theres a price drop and i've nearly wrapped up my usual backlog of games from the previous gen :P

$200 or less is near splurge territory; up to $250 and it's "I'll think about it." If it's $300, it would need to be special and something a little different than what I'm used to. Above $300, and most likely not unless it could double as a small computer or do other useful things other than gaming.

Anything above $299 for consoles is expensive and anything above $199 for a Handheld is expensive. I didn't buy as many games this gen like I did last gen because I just can't afford to buy that many games anymore.

Anything over 300 bucks for the fully featured system is too much. This is suppose to be accessible easy gaming. Its not suppose to be a technological giant.
