[QUOTE="SauceKing"]

[QUOTE="wis3boi"] desktops....outdated? Does not compute. What will developers use to make software? Oh right....desktops....wis3boi

devs can code on a PC from the 80s...

stopped reading there. Go back to ignorant-ville

Just another console gamer that thinks developers can still sit with a 386 making the latest games.

Looking at the success of the Wii and the Kinect upgrade for the 360, I think it's safe to say that consoles are going casual. Mobile phones /tablets also for the casual gamers. We will again see a clear distinction between console based games and PC games like it used to be.

There is and always will be a huge install base of hardcore PC fans that want the fastest tech money can buy. It's human nature, can't fight that.

[QUOTE="wis3boi"][QUOTE="SauceKing"]

if you look at the statistics of laptop vs dekstop PC sales over the years, i think its safe to say the PC market is moving smaller, less powered and more mobile.

SauceKing

and there will always be desktops because there's only so much you can do with mobile devices

like the razer tablet at CES that costs under $1000 and plays skyrim on ultra?

mobile devices are improving at an incredible rate compared to big bulky desktop video cards.

PC gamers fail to grasp the fact that consoles are so damn popular, as well as mobile devices... because nobody really cares that much about 16xAA and 1920 x 1200 resolution.

Normal people dont pixel scan everything in order to feel superior... normal people just play, and buy what looks good to them.

I predict a much higher probability that the mobile phones & tablets will replace the consoles, not the desktops.

The console users are a much closer audience to portables than what hardcore PC gamers ever will be.

Besides most hardcore PC gamers build there own PCs so you might want to check the chart for sold GPUs instead.

It's not shrinking more like stagnated. What's the use in buying new top of the line PCs when there are no games that need them. You can still play all the games released with a PC from 2008.

PC is a moderate upgrade designated mostly for enthusiasts. On a raw power level, its heads and tails above consoles... but even PC exclusive developers tailor their games to lower end systems in order to increase their customer base.

So the actual realized graphical difference of PCs, really isnt that great.

playing games with higher resolution above 720p and AA, simply isnt very important to most. The polygon counts, physics, various particle effects... is where gamers are used to seeing improvement. But even PC only devs are reluctant to tailor games to high spec PCs because they know the casual PC gaming market is growing, while the hardcore PC gaming market is shrinking.

[QUOTE="NYrockinlegend"]PCs are one of the best platforms for games. They have the best shooters and RPGs, and the best versions of multiplats. Knowing this, then why isn't the PC the most popular platform? Because it doesn't have the marketing and ad campaigns that the consoles do. PCs are also difficult to build and actually require smart buying and knowing your computer hardware which most ppl don't have the attention span to learn about. I need to get a gaming PC someday. I'm getting tired of going through console after console only to buy another one every 5-7 years. And just for a modest graphics upgrade? I'll prob always own at least one console just so I can game with my friends and keep up with what they're playing, but PC to me seems like the superior option.ZombieKiller7

As opposed to upgrading hardware every 2-3 years?

PC isn't the most popular platform for 1 reason :

When you plunk down $60 for a game, you are not %100 sure it will run on your rig or not. You can get it running most of the time, but in some cases it will keep BSOD and there is nothing you can do until you get different set of hardware.

Same reason PS3 is failing

You buy $60 game Fallout 3 or Obliv or Skyrim and it's f*cking borked.

So people stop buying for that system.

Come to my house I will show you my Red Alert 3 that won't get past the third mission without crashing. I've reinstalled the game, reinstalled the OS, changed the video card, tested my RAM, there is jack schit I can do about it.

Now I have spent 3 years on consoles, made alot of friends, alot of drunken 3am pontificating and soul searching.

I find myself coming to love the machines and the people I've met on them.

Of my decades of gaming on various platforms I regret nothing.

I realize they are all temporary, there is no "forever platform." There is only today.

Well maybe PC gaming just isn't for you, which is perfectly fine.

Yes, it takes more knowledge to enjoy this hobby on a PC than on a console. But for many of us PC enthusiasts it's also so much more rewarding than just inserting a disc and fire away. I've never and I mean never been confronted with something that I couldn't fix myself and I've been into this hobby for a long, long time.

I think that's one of the differences between console and PC gamers, the willing to learn something, expanding the hobby beyond just pushing a button on a joypad. It can be very useful knowledge to, depending on what field you're working in.

As for myself all the exclusives I want to play are all on PC. Untill this gen I used to be both but now PC only. All platforms except the Wii share the majority of the games so PC is the way to go.

I don't think it matters if Sony is ready or not. I don't really think the market is ready for a new console from either MS or Sony to be honest.

The world economy is still struggling to get back upon the feet. Casual gamers are the main market now days as has been proved by the success of the Wii and the kinect upgrade that is going very strong. I can predict a more serious shift towards mobile phones / tablets (maybe) as the entertainment system.

I think it's more about the users needs than anything else this time around. The bigger target market the better chances are you will be successful. A android operated mobile phone can be used for almost anything (and who doesn't own / need a mobile phone these days?), Internet, movies, music, gaming even some work related tasks. Connect that sucker to a TV-set or a monitor with a keyboard/ joypad and you have an all round entertainment system. In a couple of years mobile phones will rival the power of this gen consoles. Add to the increasing amount of casual gamers that don't really care if the game is bleeding top of the end high tech.

Nintendo is doing the right thing releasing their next console though as they know their users focusing on the causals. The hardcore gamers will stay with the PC as the gaming platform.

Others would think otherwise. PS3 isn't exactly as great as the PS1 or the PS2.

The N64, Saga Satern, Gamecube, Jaguar, Virtual Boy, Philips CD-i and that Apple Console Pippin says hello.

Some of you guys really need to understand the meaning of the word, "disappointment".

Mentioning the CD-I in this context just proves how off you really are. We're not talking Philips trying to break into the gaming market here.

[QUOTE="fireballonfire"] This is quite a valid point[QUOTE="fireballonfire"]Pfft how old are you?

PC_Otter

I turnfive next month.

Has there ever been a console with higher expectations than the PS3? With such a high price tag and one year later release still running even with the 360 performance wise. Increasing the already high developing costs, delaying games for other platforms. It's the cause for a lot of crap this gen, believe it or not.

You have a valid point in the increase of developing costs, but the same thing happened with the PS2. Each vast increase in computing power with the consoles has meant a jump in development costs. If a Cell derived CPU or a PowerPC based one was put into the PS4, it would mitigate the issues normally experienced by developers in moving to a new system. It's definitely expected that there will be a current type GPU, and that will be some new tech that developers will have to learn to use to their advantage, but it will be easier for devs who have been so used to having to load balance between the Cell and the RSX, because the RSX is the PS3's real weak link and only with implementing graphics on the Cell BE can the PS3 match the 360 GPU-only graphics. I think in the end a quad core Power7 based CPU would be best with perhaps 8 SPEs bolted on for backwards compatibility and for devs to leverage for physics, etc.

Of course, the costs increase developing for new more advanced technology but why increase it unnecessarily. Is it just me or wouldn't it be a better approach to make it easier to develop for cutting costs and make it more accessible? I hope for Sonys sake that they lay off some of their arrogance next round.
