Jet Set Radio Future, Shadow of the Colossus, and Final Fantasy XII. And more recently Bayonetta.

[QUOTE="ASK_Story"]Seeing the IGN review, the game looks amazingly incredible. Awesome visuals, masterful animation and art, Square-Enix developers are truly talented when it comes to this stuff. I think it's worth playing just for that alone, to see the visual spectacle. As I said before, it's a interactive movie more than a game. Shame-usBlackley

I got that out of my system back when I played The Bouncer.

And I've got nothing against interactive movies disguised as games. My problem is that an interactive movie requires a strong (read: STRONG) narrative and superb acting, and I've seen nothing of that from the industry to date that even comes close to that. It's usually passable at best acting (most recent example was Heavy Rain -- the acting was all OVER the place, some passable, some downright laughable) and narratives that are just inches away from being crippled and poorly edited (MGS4). Ask yourself -- how many people would've sat in a theatre to watch MGS4's story without walking out? I'm not talking about fanboys like me here on forums, I'm talking about dads taking a day away from family duty to see a flick, college girls, and so on? I believe half the theatre would've walked out, just like they did when I went to see Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. This is the inherent danger of games trying to become something they are not currently -- the quality of what can be called a movie that the game company puts out is so far below even gutter trash like Dolph Lundgren and Jean Claude Van Damme movies that Hollywood puts out. If this is indeed an up and coming genre, it has light years still yet to go. If that is indeed what Square was after with this, I have my doubts about how successful they'll be -- narrative has never been all that great in Square games, and voice acting is something they've only been doing for about a decade, and they too have have the horrible hit-or-miss problems when it comes to quality acting.

I disagree that Final Fantasy XIII presents itself as an 'interactive movie', even during the first cut-scene heavy part of the game there is a focus on the tactical and well-crafted battle system. In my view it is one of the best Final Fantasy/RPG battle systems to date. In regard to games masquerading as movies I would agree that the acting is inconsistent and often weak, however there is a noticeable increase in cinematic quality in games, and these kind of attributes need time to progress and develop as they surely did in the film medium, following theatre performances. Therefore if you do want good story-focused games in the future then this kind of development, and often experimentation, should be encouraged. I do completely agree that people would of left the movie theatre if the story of MGS4 were presented in the film medium, but the story works well in a video game. The MGS4 story is far from bad in my view and the core elements could be developed into a movie with some serious work and changes, but the premise could work. I say we encourage game developers to experiment and expand, rather than repeat old tried and tested methods of portraying video game narrative, and see where it goes.

[QUOTE="coveredeyes"][QUOTE="Rekunta"]

I'll be flat out honest here: to a large extent I play them to escape reality. I have a serious chronic disease that is a constant threat and hardship, and I just need to get away sometimes. Games do the job. Kind of sad, but it's the truth.

It's not the only reason, however......gaming allows me to do and experience things not allowed in real life. I love seeing the creativity and ingenuity, and also appreciate the technical merits. It's also enjoyable to try to figure out how the designers accomplished what they did.

Sorry to hear that man. Video games do a great job to take you away from reality. I play partly for escapism; getting away from my depression which I know, ironically enough is partly due to lack of exercise and too much time on video games. Other big reasons for me are the graphical innovations (especially the 3D modeling which I practice from time to time), the challenges a game can present, the stories games can tell, as effectively as any other medium; and the fun of playing a game simply because in a way you are 'playing'. I've been playing since I was 4 years old because of my dad's influence, playing the early prince of persia games etc. and it has progressed from there.

Yea, I always wonder if I play videogames because I'm depressed, or I'm depressed because I play videogames. :? Considering I was playing them before I got depressed and do enjoy them for more than escapism, it's safe to say there's really no correlation.....but it probably doesn't help.

Btw, what program do you do 3D with? I'd like to get into it, but have no idea where to start. Doesn't 3D studio cost around 30k?

No its not as bad as some people think. There are a few free good 3D programs such as blender. It takes awhile to get used to, but does the job. I don't have or need a studio, seeing as I just make character models and do nothing with them, such as rendering and texturing, all you need really is a reasonable computer. It does depend on what you want to do, but if like me, you just like to practice and mess around from time to time then a 3D studio is completely out of the question. So yeah try blender, zBrush is another good one but is expensive, of course there are other less 'legitimate' ways of acquiring the software if your low on cash. Hope that helped. You can message me if you want more info etc. if you like. :)

Just out of interest, to all the people who are currently playing the game: are you playing the Japanese import, or is there some way of getting it early that I am completely unaware of?

dvader654
There are also a ton of people pirating it for the 360.

Totally forgot about xbox 360 hacks, never even crossed my mind. Thanks.

Playing horror games at night should be mandatory!! It's also alot scarier when your home alone in the dark with 3 cats who are hyper.

Hard to say, FF7 was amazing, but, we have new standard now. It would just ruin our sweet memory. magicalclick
I completely agree, it should be left alone, the release of AC was enough for me. Also I think that if Final Fantasy VII were to be released now (not back in 1997) with improved graphics etc. but same battle system and the like, then this game would not be a huge hit critically.
