Not surprising in the least. Sony is shooting themselves in the foot forcing the Blu-Ray drive on people who are more interested in playing quality games than watching high-def movies. They're banking on a DVD format that is not even out yet, let alone the market leader. They're backing a HD format when most US homes still don't own a HDTV. They're already charging a ludicrous price and they are still losing hundreds of dollars per system. Now the rumors swirl of $70 to $80 games (Blu-Ray discs are more expensive to manufacture folks, look at the difference between regular DVD and high-def DVD prices) console and software shortages. I'm not ready to get shot over my PS3 thank you very much. Remember the 360 launch? This will be the same only worse, you can bet on it. This is not just about a $600 price point. This is about what you get for your investment. Sony had better pray to the gods of video gaming that their console is defect free (and if history serves correct, it won't be) because as irate as some 360 owners were about problems on their $400 system, it will be that much worse for a $600 one. You can also count on many smaller developers who get forced to choose between the three consoles to go with either the 360 or the Wii simply because of development costs. Formatting a game this generation will be much more tricky than coding, developing games for the Blu-Ray will be more expensive and will ultimately hurt the little guy. You can also count on multi-platform games looking pretty similar on the PS3 and the 360, it doesn't make good business sense to build a hot rod version of one game only to water it down on another system UNLESS you are a big developer who can afford to do so (EA comes to mind). This alienates the fan base who gets stuck with the lesser game. American McGee was right, the 360 and the PS3 are simply hardware updates, the Wii is the only true step forward in how we play video games. Pretty graphics are great, but the PS3 doesn't look to be that much prettier than the 360 to justify the price. Sony got my money the last 2 generations, Microsoft and Nintendo will have it this generation. Let us not forget that at one time Nintendo was the market giant. Things change and Sony would be well served to remember that. No thanks Sony.
