@FumikoM @Spokker There are over 5 million men in prison in the United States. There are only over 500,000 women in prison.
Or is your claim that women are just better at getting away from it?
There are stories about female criminals though. Try Orange is the New Black. Good show, but the main character is insufferable, meaning I love to hate her.
@FumikoM @Spokker Look at statistics and demographics. Next you are going to tell me that you believe that half of all video gamers are women. Break it down and you'll see that it's not true when it comes to console games, like the consoles Grand Theft Auto V is being released on.
@LesserAngel @Spokker GTA V isn't 100% realistic, few games even strive to be. But it is informed by the real world's cultural norms and values.
In Mass Effect, for example, the game tells YOU what the cultural norms are, what's right and wrong, what morality is. In GTA and games like it, we go in knowing what the cultural norms and values are. And then the game is going to manipulate them as it sees fit, parodying our world and other things.
When we react to something GTA V, we are reacting based on our own experiences in the real world. We react based on our experiences with race, gender, ethnicity, crime, etc. In Mass Effect, there is a concept of racism that is based on Mass Effect's concept of racism, i.e. conflict between species. In GTA V, when race comes up, it will be based on what we know about blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and so on. That's just an example, but the same goes for gender.
@JBStone1981 @musalala No, feminists rage about the idea of fictional women not having the same advantages men do. In real life, however, we can see that the gender gap is explained by differences in the kinds of jobs men and women do. We know that the raw wage gap itself is narrowing because more women are in college than men, leading us to question why men, notably young men, are falling behind, but few seem to care about that issue.
We know that in matters of domestic dispute, the women is advantaged. A man will be taken away in handcuffs on an accusation. In divorce precedings, some states still have lifetime alimony. How is that for privilege?
But keep raging about the lack of female protagonists in video games.
@shadowhunter0 @DJWicky_wicky_ @CnConrad Those games take place in supernatural worlds. GTA is closer to real life. It is informed by the culture and locations in which people currently live and generally obeys the laws of physics as best a video game console can emulate. It parodies modern American culture, so cultural norms regarding gender will apply.
The Tomb Raider reboot is great and I'm on my second playthrough, but it doesn't do the same things GTA V is trying to do.
