I wonder if the GameCube's cable is the same type so I can try and see if the distortion goes away.

Turn your TV off when your Wii isn't in use and the static noise will stop... i guess... If you are not connected to WiiConnect24 and put the Wii to standby/off does the light not turn red... I don't know how it works as my WiiConnect24 has always been on.

Right, so your Wii works wirelessly through wifi as you have already managed to connect and begin downloading the update. You must have successfully managed to setup your internet connection to get this far. It might be a case that your internet connection stalled or was lost. If Wii's are clever enough they probably download all the update before installing the update on the console itself, making it safe to reset it. It may not work, but I would reset your Wii and try the update again. (The update should only take a few minutes).

It also doesn't have the latest version of either Flash or Java. I can't remember.

Probably not. Almost certainly not if there is a Wii Sports 2. Though I can see the Wii Sports series being bundled with the console for a while to come.

They are two different games. As long as they both get good reviews buy Sonic if you want a Sonic game and buy SSX if you want a snowboarding game...

I don't know. I'd not bet on it. What about viruses too?

Thanks,.... I have tried that, and I have tried using the SCART adaptor instead and I have the same problem. Could it be a faulty cable?
