I think his thinking is he can make just as much or more money as an indie developer with less work than going big budget AAA.
The problem is striking big in the indie department is like winning the lottery. You might make a truly good indie game that falls flat or make something in 15mins like Flappy Birds and make 50k a day.
Often there is no rhyme or reason to it and is constantly changing. You might make a game for a nitch only for it to go out of style right before you release it or have 90 clones that some how do better.
