Formula 1 teams have backed a new plan for more lenient penalties to be handed out during grands prix.

From 2014, stewards will, for example, be able to hand out five or 10 second penalties, which will be taken at a driver's subsequent pitstop.

If the driver does not stop again, then the penalty will be added to their race time.

The new system has been proposed to ensure drivers are not punished by a hefty drive-through for a minor infringement.

It was agreed during a meeting of F1's Sporting Working Group in Singapore this weekend and will now be put to the FIA World Council for approval.

Teams have also agreed that Pirelli can tweak the front and rear tyre compounds next season to balance out the car demands of the new 2014 engine regulations.

There will still be only four compounds available for the season - super-soft, soft, medium and hard but within each of those the front and rears no longer needs to be identical as is currently mandatory.

The new turbo engines are set to deliver more torque over the current V8 power units, which will put a heavier demand on the rear tyres.

Further matters that were approved include tighter pitstop safety rules, which include mandatory over-ride facilities for pit crews, and the ratification of penalties for unsafe pitstop releases.

The exact details of the changes are set to be confirmed following the FIA's WMSC meeting next week.

Formula 1 is set to give the green light to a young driver Friday test plan at grands prix next season as part of an effort to hand rookies extra track time.

AUTOSPORT can reveal that F1 teams have approved a change to the sport's regulations that will encourage outfits to run test drivers during an extended first free practice session.

The matter was discussed during a meeting of F1 think tank, the Sporting Working Committee, ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

Teams voted in favour of the idea, which will result in first practice being extended from 90 minutes to two hours.

To further encourage teams to run test drivers, the rules are also to be changed to allow teams to swap drivers during the session itself.

This means teams can ensure their regular race drivers are not hampered too much by having to sit out the session, and can take over from any testers that run early on.

Teams will also be handed an extra set of tyres, which can only be used during that portion of running, for the first 30 minutes of the session.

Having been approved by the teams, the matter now needs to be ratified by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, which is meeting in Croatia next week.

DID YOU KNOW: Despite pushing the 2 hour time limit naturally, last year was the first time the race ended as a result of the time limit instead of full laps completed.

POINTS OF DISCUSSION

 

  1. The Singapore Sling is no more - was this the right move?
  2. With Felipe Massa out of Ferrari at the end of the year, will he race for himself or continue to play the team role to help Alonso's title bid?
  3. With a lack of payment being the reason why Kimi left Lotus, is this likely to deter Hulkenberg from potentially joining the team?
  4. Only three men have won in Singapore so far - Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel - will it be one of these three again or someone else?
  5. Will there be a window of opportunity for Caterham to jump ahead of Marussia in the constructors championship for the rest of the season?

Del Rio's streak, technically, comes to an end; Orton the only champion to lose their title, and Paul Heyman is undefeated in 2013. That was Night of Champions then.

Also, does Seb count given he was using a V10 Toro Rosso wasn't he? (Or was that the season before)

No one. There are no "V8's on offer for next year".

Of the current drivers to have run V8's of those three engine manufacturers, there are only two: Fernando Alonso (Renault 2006, 2008-09; Mercedes 2007; Ferrari 2010-Current) and Kimi Raikkonen (Mercedes 2006; Ferrari 2007-09; Renault 2012-Current).

Three drivers currently on the grid have raced two of the V8's: Sebastian Vettel, Adrian Sutil and Sergio Perez. Everyone else has either ran one or none of them.
