@Lacarus The top down shooter was Chaos Engine, The civil war game was North and South. Danny's an old school Amiga gamer = maximum cred.

This is very, very similar to Jetstrike on the old Amiga. Old becomes new! Good times to be a veteran gamer.

Sensible soccer ok yeah, but megalomania is really one of the best rts games ever and way ahead of its time. I don't think that many people played it, because it should be near the top of any 'best of amiga' list. Lemon has it at #60 which is just wrong. Good times in 91.

Some pretty weak arguments against my original post about how the new game is dumbed down compared to apocalypse.

I won't bother with the many reasons, except to say that when you start a game in the original ufo or apocalypse, you just see the geoscape/cityscape, and the ufos start coming. You learn about cover/tactics not through a tutorial, but on the corpses of your first few squads.

Anyway, I'm not a hater. A dumbed down xcom is still better than 99% of other games out there. And its introducing a new generation to the style of game. We're on the same team.

Great history Danny. I don't understand the love for the new game.Iit looks simplified and dumbed down (console ready!). A lot has been stripped out - even the maps are now pre-scripted WTF.

Just remember a sequel to xcom was made, Apocalypse is an underrated gem. Once you get over the terrible art design, the game is deep, hardcore and far more engaging. In the original UFO you research plasma then you are pretty much ok from then on. On Apocalypse you have fully armoured veteren squad then suddenly aliens attack with heat seeking missiles that melt armour. Then its time to sweat it out all again until you climb up the massive tech tree, and finally get revenge.

Remember those countries that sign pacts with the aliens? In Apocalypse you can make traitors pay by raiding their buildings, blowing up entire maps, then levelling the whole place until they are bankrupt. Gold.

Still not convinced. This looks like more of the same, except the graphics are more taxing so you can't have truly huge battles without slowdown. Unit sizes still look about 100 or so, I was hoping they would make battles in the tens of thousands by now.

Medievil 2 the sheer terror of meeting the Timurids in the field and panic as your vertern units crumble was awesome. but that was six years ago, Rome 2 is more of the same... but these guys are talking about as if its new..

Woah a minute, mass effect 2? While I only played the demo the constant plot holes meant I couldn't get into it. You visit a prison space station which has force field generators to trap rioting inmates (they even demo it for you). The station owners are bad and want to trap you, yet they let you on board carrying your weapons. They then lead you to a lockable cell to spring the trap, but reveal their plan BEFORE they are able to lock you in it (allowing you to shoot your way out). Then even if that didn't work, why don't they use the force fields? Dumb. The best games are the ones where the mechanics allow you to make your own epic stories. Thats why veteran gamers know that UFO was the best.
