Kara shows that the tech for this generation is far from redundant. Heck, God of War III is a prime example too - some of the best in-game visuals on consoles, plenty of enemies on screen, good framerate with no drops & a minuscule install size.
The way it should be determined if new consoles are needed should pretty much be based off the quality in PC gaming (aside from Nintendo & other things revolving around elements unavailable on PC). Right now it's not THAT far ahead of console gaming so it seems that the only reason that new ones are coming out so soon is simply to keep to a cycle of releases. It's been proved that the quality achieved on the system can still be pushed further - technical problems are pretty much the fault of the developers or their publishers.
As for the over-saturation of shooters' & rpgs...I'm conflicted. On the one hand there ARE too many & all too often new shooters simply stick to a generic template while dropping in a gimmick or two, & rps elements are in everything & 'proper' rps are getting more & more streamlined & casualised. But on the other shooters are extremely popular (would be a hypocrite if I said people were getting sick of them) & having rpg elements is rarely a bad thing. Plus they make truly innovative games stand out so much more.
tl;dr - agree about no need for new console, not sure about genre comment.
Picked up a copy of Mirror's Edge in CEX a few months back (£2.50 - BARGAIN!) & loved it, so will likely be getting the sequel. Highly doubt I would be hyped for it otherwise so take note EA; the used game industry has its benefits!
No, Cliff; Vanquish most certainly did NOT need multiplayer. In fact there wasn't much that could be done to improve it at all - while the campaign was short it would've got boring if it was any longer & there were plenty of challenges, not to mention the score system on it. Vanquish is a gem & Japanese devs have it right with their multiplayer - either have something innovative, practical & fun (eg Armored Core 5, Demons/Dark Souls) or don't have it at all.
@HALF-MONSTER It IS set in America. Although the way they showcase it definitely seems to show a bit of bias. eg:
"The future of our land depends on those-"*cut to American flag*
"-who are truly free."
*exit flag*
I don't think I could care much if the Brits are displayed as the bad guys - it happens all the time these days. The bad guys in action films tend to have 'British' accents (because let's face it, nobody from Britain talks like that any more). I can't really help but laugh at any depiction of the redcoats now after that one episode of South Park anyways.
I can kinda understand where this is coming from. But only because of the games already being released for the consoles. 360s tend to have more competitive and action games released for them, WIi has the more family-friendly & generally 'fun' games while PS3 has a big mix but a lot more 'adult-themed' titles than the other two. So naturally the people who prefer those types of games will go for the respective console.
Of course Chen left out the PC here, but that's got a lot of these sorts of games too.
