I for one hope they maintain the realism of WWI, allowing players to be stuck in trenches for weeks at a time, standing in knee-deep water and dead bodies with rats crawling over them.
"We live in a culture where the first impulse is to have a male main character, to assume a male gaze on the screen," professor and game designer Tracy Fullerton told the publication. "That's got to change. Young women need characters to have as role models.
What's interesting to me here is that in the service of trying to uplift women and girls, we talk down to them. People tend to choose their own role models-- either individually, or by peer pressure, and unfortunately it's not always a rational choice, even if an industry is "spoon feeding" us characters that are designed to be as such.
I saw the original release of Star Wars in the theater in 1977 (yes, I'm that old). I was a young, impressionable 10 yr old boy. My role model was Han Solo, the roguish smuggler who lived on the opposite side of the law, and didn't hesitate to kill other unscrupulous characters to whom he owed money.
There's certainly nothing wrong with putting more female leads in movies and video games. Nothing at all, but let's not talk down to women and girls while we do it. Just make a cool, likable character, and the rest will follow.
@roxor3: I too was a little surprised that someone pushing 40 is having panty-tantrums and throwing his controller because these games is teh Sux0r, then I realized he was in a band and his mom probably still does his laundry.
