Poll Xbox One X vs. Your computer? (253 votes)

X1X wins 34%
My computer wins 53%
It's too close to call/Not sure 8%
Ooh woo, I'm a rebel just for kicks, now 4%

In general game performance how do you think Xbox One X fares against your computer? Bear in mind the Xbox One X specs:

CPU: custom eight core CPU at 2.3GHz
RAM: 12GB of GDDR5 RAM at 6.8GHz with 326 GB/s bandwidth
GPU: Six teraflop GPU at 1,172 MHz, 40 compute units

My specs-
CPU: core i5-2400 at 3.1Ghz
RAM: old ass ddr3 1333 8GB ram
GPU: GTX 970

I'm pretty sure in my case X1X wins. Which is embarrassing cuz my PC looks like it could probably eat it.

Even if my PC underperformed technically relative to Xbox, I'd still prefer it for the other advantages it has.

But as it stands, it is much better.

i7-6700k + GTX 1080
i7-2700k + GTX 1060

Both are probably superior, though I do very little gaming any longer on the latter.

Ryzen 5 1500X (overclocked to 3.8 GHz)
16 GB DDR4 2400 MHz
GTX 1060 6 GB (Zotac Amped edition)

I'll say my PC beats an X1X. That graphics card can play most racing games at 4K, High settings and high frame rate. Even Battlefield 1 was shown to be played at 4K with High/Ultra settings and high frame rate. Most others like Witcher 3 and Tomb Raider, more likely Med settings with 30-40 fps.

But in all cases that actually IS native 4K, not upscaled. And with the option to play in 1080p, can run most games Ultra or High/Ultra mix with 60+ fps average, and doing it in 21:9 ultrawide.

My PC has a better CPU, GPU, and more memory. VRAM (HBM) is faster. System RAM (DDR3) is slower.

I'm gaming only in 1080p. So, the XB1X wins by default. Besides, my current FX-8350/GTX 1060 6GB still falls short. It's got a year, maybe two, before I assemble a new PC.

Getting a new cpu will give such a performance boost in quite a few games it will be like getting a new gpu.

The CPU is okay enough. I observed my FX-8350 for a while and my main problem was the high temperatures throttling back the CPU somewhat which sometimes causes the framerates to drop from the 100's to say, 50's and 40's in some games. But, the dips aren't really disrupting my gameplay which is why I just ignored them. I turned off my framerate counters and became much less conscious of it.

A Hyper Evo HSF would probably solve my problems. But, if it isn't a big problem, I'm not going to lift a finger to solve it. ;)

@aroxx_ab: I have a tablet and a phone. Outside of gaming, I see no reason to own a PC....which is kind of the reverse of years ago when you needed to own a PC so getting something that could play games made sense. It doesn't make sense to me anymore.

Similarly, the 'computer room' in the house doesn't make sense to me anymore.

Games like Witcher 3 didn't heavily mitigate against well known AMD GPU bottlenecks e.g. Pixel Engine being connected to memory controller bottleneck path.

Games such as Battlefield 1 has lighting pass being run via Compute Engine (Compute Shader) which is connected to faster L2 cache on both AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. There's extra bias with Compute Shader based rendering with AMD's software optimization guides.

For Scorpio DF reveal, Forza wet track's heavy alpha/semitransparent effects was mostly a demo for Pixel Engine's improvements. I degrade my GTX 1080 Ti to 6.5 TFLOPS and still has solid 4K /60 fps Nurburgring wet track result. This is why I concluded that Pixel Engine path and memory bandwidth was the main improvements areas for X1X.

The cruncher is Unreal Engine 4 based ARC Survival Evolved's result on X1X vs AMD's RX-480/R9-390X/RX-580 vs GTX 980 Ti vs GTX 1070. With Unreal Engine 4 based games, current AMD GPUs has very high chance they will lose to NVIDIA's TFLOPS GPU counterpart e.g. GTX 980 Ti (6 TFLOPS). X1X has buck the trend and delivered GTX 1070 level performance and beating reference GTX 980 Ti, GTX 1060 6GB, RX-580, R9-390X and Fury X.

Both Scorpio DF Forza reveal and ARC Survival's result pointed to GTX 1070 class performance. X1X's 384 bit GDDR5-6800 doesn't have the same efficiency as GTX 1070's 256 bit GDDR5-8000 i.e. MS thrown more physical memory bandwidth at the problem when compared to GTX 1070.

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/58011/ark-dev-xbox-one-pc-gtx-1070-16gb-ram/index.html

As for the comparisons between the PC and Xbox One X, he said: "If you think about it, it's kind of equivalent to a GTX 1070 maybe and the Xbox One X actually has 12GB of GDDR5 memory. It's kind of like having a pretty high-end PC minus a lot of overhead due to the operating system on PC. So I would say it's equivalent to a 16GB 1070 PC, and that's a pretty good deal for $499".

@AdamK47: I love it when you post here. Your PCs are so above and beyond its insane. I've thought of chasing your builds, but my wife would cut me off from the good stuff. Your rigs are so clean and beefy, Gamespot and System Wars don't deserve you.

On topic. I have a i7 5960X at 4.2. 32GB of DDR4 RAM. 2 GTX 1070 FTWs. My PC runs circles around the Xbox One X but also knows it's limits at 4K/ultra settings. All of my skepticism of the Xbox One X is based on what my PC can do. I've downclocked the CPU, removed RAM and tried to run games at 4K/Xbox One X settings for the hell of it. The console will be a beast and pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the best there is. But "true 4K" has turned into a buzzword. I'm excited for the XBone X for it's 4K HDR capabilities. But I think once I get a 4K/HDR monitor, the PC will reign supreme again. HDR is the real game changer, not resolution. IMO it goes fps>HDR>resolution.

@goldenelementxl: I'm with you on that HDR part, sadly HDR support on PC is poop and the WIndows 10 hdr is a total mess and while there are HDR monitors around the corner those are going to be on the very high price segment which isn't really going to push the smaller devs to have hdr implementation in their games

i7 2600 Sandy Bridge

8gb DDR3 1333mhz

Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti

Xbox One X wins. Do I care? No. 1080p is good enough for me. I'll stick to this PC for certain single player games and my good old PS4 for multiplayer with friends and exclusives.

Btw this was an older HP office PC that I got hooked up with for free(my uncle is an IT guy for dentist offices) and literally all I did was drop a $140 Gigabyte 1050 ti in it(didn't even upgrade the stock piece of shit 240w PSU) and it runs every game I've tried on it beautifully at 1080p on high or ultra settings. Definitely runs games better than a regular PS4 or Xbox One and it only cost me the price of the GPU.

X1X will beat your 780 SLI.

X1X has 1920x1080p with 60 fps and near EPIC settings.

Your 780 SLI wouldn't do 4K/60 fps Ultra in Forza M6

940M is stronger than Switch and Shield TV (about GeForce 920MX).

My old Sony laptop has Radeon HD 4650M which is close approximation to Wii U's IGP.

940M will beat Wii U.

I guess x1x is a good deal for its price/power

You can't compare performance based on TFLOPS alone. ESPECIALLY when it comes to AMD GPUs.

Example:

RX 480: 5.8 TFLOPS

GTX 1060: 3.8 TFLOPS

The 1060 actually beats the RX 480 in a number of games with higher framerates.

My PC with the Gigabyte GTX 1060 (factory OC'd) with my i7 4790k and 16GB of ram easily beats the Xbox One X in more ways than one. The CPU is still the weakest link in these consoles.

Can you run Forza M6 Nurburgring wet track with 4K ultra settings without dipping bellow 60 fps?

Can you run ARC Survival Evolved with 1080p near EPIC or High settings without dipping bellow 60 fps?

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2862/geforce-gtx-1060-6-gb

GTX 1060 with 1709 MHz boost mode can reach 4.375 TFLOPS.

Don't believe NVIDIA's paper spec and watch for NVIDIA's stealth overclock mode.

Gigabyte GTX 1060 G1 has 1847 Mhz boost mode, which yields 4.728 TFLOPS.

For example, https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2877/geforce-gtx-1080-ti

GTX 1080 Ti FE has 1582 Mhz boost mode on paper, but my GTX 1080 Ti FE has actual 1800 Mhz (12.9 TFLOPS) boost mode.

I have water loop cooling solution on the CPU hence it's heat is not being dump inside the PC case.

Notice R9-290's 4.8 TFLOPS matching RX-480's 5.83 TFLOPS result.

Microsoft already knows about RX-480's memory bandwidth bottlenecks.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-the-scorpio-engine-in-depth

"For 4K assets, textures get larger and render targets get larger as well. This means a couple of things - you need more space, you need more bandwidth," explains Nick Baker. "The question though was how much? We'd hate to build this GPU and then end up having to be memory-starved. All the analysis that Andrew was talking about, we were able to look at the effect of different memory bandwidths, and it quickly led us to needing more than 300GB/s memory bandwidth. In the end we ended up choosing 326GB/s. On Scorpio we are using a 384-bit GDDR5 interface - that is 12 channels. Each channel is 32 bits, and then 6.8GHz on the signalling so you multiply those up and you get the 326GB/s."

Microsoft already knows about 2 MB L2 cache boosting 4K rendering performance.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-project-scorpio-tech-revealed

We quadrupled the GPU L2 cache size, again for targeting the 4K performance."

Existing AMD GPU's pixel engines are not even connected to L2 cache.

X1X GPU has 60 deep graphics pipeline changes which involves bottleneck reduction.

Got an i5 something, 12GB RAM and a GTX1070. I max out pretty much everything I play graphically without problem. No idea if the One X is more powerful, but I doubt it.

No, I wouldn't think so. When I say "max out", that doesn't go for the resolution, but the details. My settings for games are usually at 1920x1080 with everything set to ultra.

Can the One X?

I don't really care about 4K personally and probably wont for a long time..

1. Yes. Only needs GTX 1080 Ti degraded to 6.5 TFLOPS for Ultra 4K 60 fps. Your GTX 1070 has DSR feature to render at 4K resolution on 1920x1080p screen.

2.

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/58011/ark-dev-xbox-one-pc-gtx-1070-16gb-ram/index.html

So I would say it's equivalent to a 16GB 1070 PC, and that's a pretty good deal for $499".

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/57990/ark-dev-xbox-one-horsepower-phenomenal/index.html

Studio Wildcard's Jesse Rapczak was recently on the E3 2017 Live Show with Geoff Keighley, where he said that they're aiming for 60FPS on Xbox One X, and that 60FPS was "not possible" on the PS4 Pro. PS4 Pro users can run 60FPS, but only at 720p where we'll see ARK running at 1080p 60FPS on close to Epic settings on Xbox One X.

During the interview, Rapczak said: "It's amazing. It's basically like Epic settings on PC, we're targeting 60FPS. We recently introduced variable frame rate, but on Xbox One X with the extra horsepower, you'll notice less variation in your frame rate even in busy situations".

Rapczak added: ":The PS4 Pro also has improved frame rate when compared to PS4. Before the XB1X, it was the best console version of ARK, but it's hard to argue with that 6 teraflops [laughs]. Having the same frame rate in our game isn't really possible, there are a couple reasons for that: the XB1X not only has a faster CPU than PS4 Pro, it also has a lot more RAM. I'd say there's a 50% performance difference".

When it comes to the Xbox One X, his comments build hype: "The Xbox One X is great. Everything from the devkits is so much easier to develop for. It's faster in all sorts of ways, especially for us developers it's easier to iterate. In terms of horsepower, it's just phenomenal, it is expensive but when you think about the price for a similarly specced PC, it doesn't unreasonable at all to me. Overall, the quality is going up a lot. It would have been easy to say, hey, let's just take the Xbox One version and crank up the resolution, but actually we've brought over some enhanced effects from PC. We've actually got volumetric lighting and clouds on Xbox One X, higher draw distance that is equal to PC's Epic settings, higher resolution textures...".

X1X has beaten reference GTX 980 Ti

X1X is doing something that the stock RX-480 doesn't do...

Core i7 4790k at 4.4 Ghz with Corsair H100i water cooling, MSI GTX 1080 Ti FE with EVGA hybrid cooling kit (11GB G5X, core@ 2Ghz) and 16GB DDR3 @ 2166Mhz. So yeah mine beats it with a long shot

Gtx 1070 and i7 6700k 16gb ram Its just a little bit better than one x. And costs a lot more. X1X 499€ with controller. My pc was 1500€.

I guess x1x is a good deal for its price/power

Your GPU's a little better but your CPU kicks its arse. As far as I'm concerned, being able to get 60FPS across the board at 2K and upwards results in a much better gaming experience.

Are these two games really the yardstick for how well someone's PC compares to a One X? You're talking about one of Microsoft's flagship current gen series they use to promote their consoles, and a notoriously poorly optimised PC title. That's not enough evidence to suggest it'll perform better across the board than, say, an i5, GTX 1070 PC.

Third party AAA titles will give us a better understanding. I wouldn't be at all surprised if One X games such as AC Origins are not only 30 FPS and using dynamic resolutions, but with lower settings for shadows, lighting, draw distance, etc, etc. This has always been the case and I don't expect it to change. Textures will get a decent bump but corners will still have to be cut elsewhere.

Why would people lie about their rigs? This is a gaming forum, so just the place where you'd find PC owners that have powerful systems.

If the Xbox One X has multiple games running at 4K (natively not upscaled) and in 60 fps, then it beats my PC.
