Congrats, though would this be considered a success for Nintendo, considering they and their fans claim nearly 8 million sold across the Metroid Prime series constitutes a market failure not worthy of future investment?
@super600: It's not "free". You literally already payed for it. Most of it is on the disc. Of what is already inside the disc, much of it is in a near complete state, some of of it isn't.
The updates aren't free just because. The game literally launched in an early access state for $60. It'll only be "complete" by August (assuming there are no delays with the updates).
There is of course room for paid DLC later on, but that's a different story.
I bet you paid dlc will start appearing later this year for this game if they feel like doing it, but you won;t have to pay for new maps and most likely weapons. Paid dlc may be for cosmetic stuff like new shirts, shoes and etc and maybe even an expansion to the single player campaign if they feel like it.
@super600: What has been found on the disc is exactly that: Modes, weapons and maps. Most 99% complete for all intents and purposes, others just defined as exisiting objects and others merely mentioned. That is why thos updates are free. Least until August.
I don't think anyone minds paid cosmetic stuff, in any sort of game.

I am a Nintendo fan and I never said that nor agree with it. In fact I can assume most Nintendo fans in GS don't think that.
Anyways the Splatoon sales are great considering the install base and the ways Nintendo screwed up on the online multiplayer.
locking content behind amiibos and releasing a game with cut content to release later as DLC. No thanks I don't support this sort of practice. Especially from Nintendo.
@super600:
It is however ironic to see sheep pay $60 for an early access game :P
Only American sheep.
For the rest of the world this game is actually a pretty damn good deal.
Europeans pay around 38 euros for a game that will be full on content this august.
So... is this also among the first non-Mario/Zelda/Smash games to hit a million on the Wii U? Or am I off?
DKC: TF crossed a million.
Its awesome to have this as one of our top sellers, i hear its pushing consoles a little in Japan and everywhere else, now that is something i thought wouldnt happen, i guessed game would be good, but didnt think this many would buy it. This game may even push up their where CoD sales are, thats PS4 and Xbox One top selling game and Splatoon is bout halfway their already. Ok, maybe not half way, but getting close.
It would've done 3 mil already if it were on the PS4, or PS3.
Unfortunately Sony has no interest in colorful or fun new IP's, as indicated by that right moody looking fellow in your avatar/signature.
It would probably be fair to say Nintendo have saved gaming, yet again.

With one 8/10 game on a moribund console.
That's like saying Sega saved gaming with Power Stone.

Sony/Microsoft at this point are practically interchangeable, with most of the games already on (as well as significantly better on) pc. Nintendo found the FPS genre just lying in the gutter, picked it up with the tip of it's wiimote, hope restored.
That's impossible. No game can sell that much without voice chat.
I really hope Nintendo keeps this franchise going. Splatoon part 2 the inkling wars on NX will be glorious.
Well, WiiU owners starving on games and buy just anything at this point. Nice to see something else than Mario games sell tho, nice indeed.
Yeah because Mario Party 10 sold over a million because they were starved for games. uh huh
CONTROL
DAMAGE
So first they said it wouldn't score well.
Then they said it wouldn't sell.
Then they said no one would keep playing it after a month.
Then they said...then they said....then they said....

Yeah because Little Big Planet 3 sold over three....oh wait. Those gamers don't want fun colorful games.

lol doubtful. Most likely it would be a massive sales flop because most Sony fans don't want to admit that they forgot how to have fun or what a fun game is anymore.

Which is surprising because Sony started with Crash, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper. I found Little Big Planet to be another fine addition to the Sony brand of mascot games.

Doesn't matter. Its not gray and filled with blood and black bars on the top and bottom. So Cows don't care. That is what they love. Not fun games.

How else do you expect them to identify themselves as mature adults? Everyone knows when you play a gun toting psychopath in a video game it means you are finally all growed up.
@drekula2: No PS4 game has hit 3 million yet.
Really? What are those 22 million owners playing?

Sales. Console sales.
I see sheep continue their mental gymnastics of justifying their own existence on this forum. Cute :)
I see the damage control continues. Those who hate will thus continue with their hating. Thusly.
Nice. I would like to add to the sales, but I have other priorities right now. I plan to pick this up before the end of the year.
@Bread_or_Decide: Well, someones jimmies got rustled. Why are your jimmies rustled friend?
I gotta admit. That was some pretty good jimmie rustilin'.

Sorry, should have been clearer. No EXCLUSIVE has hit that number yet. I am sure multiplats on PS4 must have hit that amount sold.

How many online maps does it have now? 8? 9? The game has 30+ main weapons in the game and more is being added.

It's a very common defense brought up whenever people voice their desire for a new game in the franchise. "Metroid doesn't sell". It sold nearly 8 million copies across 3 Primes I've been informed. So I'm left at a loss when 1 million is considered great (but I'm still happy for Nintendo if this is a success, make no mistake), I would just like to hear the reasoning from these people how a million is considered amazing but 8 is not, even across 3 games.

Mostly because of context, really. Metroid failed to set charts on fire even on Wii- Splatoon managed to do it (relativistically) on Wii U. Metroid is an established classic IP, Splatoon was a new game.
I'm not saying Metroid isn't successful, just that it's easy to see why, say, Mario Kart is prioritized over it.
Impressive figures for a system which only has about a million sales. High attach rate. Still, they haven't exactly had a lot of other options recently.
How many are actually still playing though??
wouldnt be surprised if 900k returned their copy after the first week :P.. i know 2 of my friends who bought it day 1 and sold it one week later lol

lol do you believe every game is like killzone and dies in month?
more than i thought it would sell. too bad that community will be dead in a month or two
Yup and like others pointed out, 1/10 console owners bought it? I thought Nintendo had this magical attach rate?
Good sales when you break a million though.

People are still playing Goldeneye Wii online. Its slowing down but enough to have full rooms going on.

It's one of the most active online communities in any game...

f course they do- can you name any other game on any console where 1/9 owners bought it?
This isn't even considering games like Smash Bros. Wii U (1/3 owners) or Mario Kart 8 (1/2 owners), which exhibit almost obscene attach rates.

lol are you really complaining about the attach rate a month into its life? Seriously?

Well it will be dead in another couple months, so yes.
