The losses keep mounting and if being downgraded to junk status is not enough, Sony is trying to sell its PC business as it has been a loss for the corporation. Sony will make a net loss for the first in at the end of the financial year in March. Unfortunately Sony is not setting fireworks in its mobile or tablet business either and the TV divisions continue to make losses. The only success is the PS4 but that alone will not help the company.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/04/us-sony-sell-idUSBREA131A220140204?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews#post

UPDATE: Sony have sold their PC business and laying off 5000 staff. The TV brand will be spun off as a wholly-owned subsidiary in July 2014. Sony is expected to announce a $1billion loss. These are very troubling times for Sony.

Well, Sony never made gaming laptops, so this doesn't have much to do with System Wars.

Sony has already lost smart tv wars, cellphone wars, tablet wars, netbook wars and laptop wars. Only PS brand is left. Lol.

The biggest threat to Sony is not Xbox or PC. It´s Sony itself XD

The Vaios name is worthless but I guess when you need cash to fund your company you will put the bait out there. This is just the beginning. Sony is waiting to see if Spiderman 2 is successful before offering up its entertainment division.

Actually Sony's most profitable venture is their insurance venture, which nets them 50% of their net income.

Here is an excerpt from the article.

"That is because Sony, which once defined Japan’s technological prowess, wowed the world with the Walkman and the Trinitron TV and shocked Hollywood with bold acquisitions like Columbia Pictures, is now in the fight of its life.

In fact, it is in a fight for its life — a development that exemplifies the stunning decline of Japan’s industrialized economy"

More from the NYT article.

“It’s almost game over at Sony,” said Yoshiaki Sakito, a former Sony executive who has worked for Walt Disney, Bain & Company, Apple and a start-up focused on innovation training. “I don’t see how Sony’s going to bounce back now.”

Probably won't see many Cows after this little Gem in this thread.

Sad day for them..............and really all of us in the gaming industry.

Wasn't getting rid of money pits what people suggested Sony do? I see no downside to them getting out of the PC market. I bought a Vaio back in late 90s, but I would probably never buy another one.

@kuu2: So the fate of the entire film division rests on one movie? You really are delusional. Xbox really sucks and the only Microsoft has a chance being the leader in the industry is Sony going under. Keep hoping because it is happening. Even a bankruptcy would not end PlayStation and a dissolution will never happen.

Sony's decline has more to do with Japan's general decline in technology. Korea is way up there with the success of Samsung. However that doesn't mean it's going to forever stay that way. Companies rise and fall all the time. This is only more exemplified in the technology business where you need to be cutting edge all the time to survive. That said Sony is releasing a lot of good products this year so they may turn around.

@Scipio8: no their biggest gainer is their insurance business, not PS. But this doesn't bode well. I own a little Sony, and really think this can be turned around. Shame, a friend in LI has a Vaio and its a nice laptop. Well at least they wont have to pay MS for windows after this.

Sony kind of sucks except when it comes to the PlayStation. Well,it's not they suck it's just that they are struggling to remain relevant in such a competitive market. The barrier of entry to make consumer electronics is getting cheaper by the day and even more competition is setting in.

From a marketing perspective, their products lack a strong usp other than "it's Sony" and water proofing is not a usp that anyone would really care about. Especially since it is only water proof if all the ports are closed.

Their stock rose by quite a lot after this news.

Selling their PC departments will benefit them in the long term.

They'll have more room to breath, re-stabilize and keep investors happy.

The film division is cutting like crazy to make it look profitable for a buyer. Spiderman is the only big name they have left and they need it to do well this summer to entice more buyers. So yes it is the divisions last hope.

Yeah I just got an Xperia Z1 Compact and it's great, it came with a free smart watch too which is a pretty dumb thing but it has a few uses and I needed a new watch.

The problem with them really is the price of their products, the phones are fine because they cost the same amount as any other companies flagship devices. But their TV's and laptops have never really hit that sweet spot between price and quality the way Samsung and LG do with TV's or a ton of companies do with laptops.

Sony is in trouble, but it isnt quite at bankruptsy. They can still possibly pull out a turnaround. Worse comes to worse, another company buys the Playstation brand.

Probably a good idea to sell off loss making dept, no?

And the PS4 is not the bright spot for Sony (its division will almost certainly post a loss this quarter) its insurance arm is.

Their forecast after the second fiscal quarter was ¥30 billion, and that's what their losses brought on by their VAIO PC sector was going to do to their bottom line, still they're selling it for $400-$500 million. Will be interesting later when they release their quarterly report and adjust their fiscal year profit/loss forecast. Anyhow, they just keep cutting and cutting areas that lose them money, I figure they'll completely abandon TVs in the next year.

It seems Kazuo Hirai's strategy is to delay bankruptcy and not to invest in growth. This is an interesting thing Samsung talked about how they grew, besides hiring the veteran staff that Sony fired, but they talked about needing to invest in workers, innovators, products, and it pays off. Years ago Kazuo Hirai thought to save a buck by coercively retiring their veteran staff, downsize, and hire younger people he thought would lead in innovation... problem was they were experienced enough. This turned Sony products into ventures that at best could only obtain razor thin profit margins, while Samsung was pulling off much wider profit margins. It was a terrible decision that's still haunting Sony to this day, and they've no other way to respond than by downsizing further and further.

They should cut the prices of their products they aren't Apple.

Oh and a lot of insecure pathetic people ITT wishing a company would go down so 10's of thousands of people can lose their jobs and become financially distraught. And this is all over the fact that they want to claim 'ownage' over cows. You people need lives.
