So if console games are 1080p/high res textures, whats the point of PC?

Assuming a non 1440 or 4k display, whats the benefit to be had for a triple SLI titan rig vs a next gen console? Typically this gen the PC advantage was 1080p and high res textures. Once consoles are running 1080p and high res textures, whats the benefit to PC? more particle effects? better lighting?

will it actually make a noticeable difference?

The pc is still needed for work, so I guess it's not useless.

It's like 720 in 2005. PCs will get higher res and better textures again. Even next-en games are plagued from low-res textures in some places and in other their quality could still be improved.

Then there's also 3D, occulous rift, multiple or ultra-wise monitors etc.

Try harder troll. All the games with better visuals like KZ:SF are going with 1080P and 30FPS. Forza 5 with pre-baked lightning is going 1080P/60FPS but it looks current gen, Mark my words...after the 2nd round of multi-plats comes out for the next-gen we will be seeing 720P/30FPS for the AAA games and 1080P/30FPS for the AA and A games. A year into the next-gen I think 720P will become standard.

displays seem to have plateaued at 1080p, at least for now. How much higher res can textures realisticallty get before people stop noticing?

THis plateau is currently ending. There's very strong push for higher res these days. Also textures can still get a lot sharper. We're nowhere near the max potential of them yet. Even what was shown from next-gen is often dissapointing texture wise. There's more to improve there currently than there is with models or lighting.

Plus I expect Occulous Rift to catch up like crazy and next-gen consoles won't have power to handle it properly.

Who is pushing for higher res displays? the consumers? or the tv manufacturers with slumping sales?

im not convinced there is any real demand for displays beyond 1080.

no doubt, just seems the gap between PC and console is shrinking, and the added hardware advantage of PCs doesnt have much room to expand, or at least not in a manner that will be easily recognizable to gamers.

Stupid troll thread but i'll bite a little.

So take out the graphics and framerate advantages and you have:

1. More games

2. Higher rated games

3. More varied control mechanisms

4. Mods

5. Customisation (tweaking games without modding them, for example I change the rate animations are displayed in Civ5)

6. Steam and other forms of DD make games cheaper

7. No license fees for indie devs to cope with

8. Free to play online

9. Genres of games unavailable to console (in any meaningful form MMO, RTS)

10. Faster loading times (SSD's are super awesome for gaming).

11. You need a decent PC in your life anyway for the many, many tasks it can perform that consoles can't.

Those are a few I can be bothered to think of.

All games on the next gen consoles won't run at 1080P. Some will run below 1080P and maybe as low as 720P.

Consumers are. They're tired of having 21 inches screen with res as low as their smartphones do. Windows 8.1 will finally support correct scalling too. The end days of 1080p as max res are definitely coming to an end.  At least on PC. There's far smaller drive to that in TV market.

BeardMaster

It has shrunk. I think that is the right way to put it, and that is to be expected when next gen systems are coming out. As the Xbone and PS4 are packing some powerful hardware.

But this gen is just getting started. Console hardware is fixed and PC hardware keeps improving so the gap will get wider and wider. Like it did this gen and any gen.

BeardMaster

Maybe. But there's other side of the coin. Consoles completely lost the launch advantage. In the past they used to blow PCs away at launch. While next-gen won't offer any real jump over PC gaming. Also..PCs got really cheap and you don't have to upgrade as often, while consoles have gotten more expensive. So consoles lost price advantage.

With the exception of a very miniscule few downlodable sidescrollers on XBLA/psn games, they simply do not exist, and never will. DEAL WITH IT

Well, filthy console peasants will play next games like that 720p -1080p, 30fps, small fov, controller(3-4 years in to the gen many multiplats will look like the pc version on LOW settings, etc)

meanwhile in the last 1-2 years, I already play games like that 2560x1440, 60fps, max settings, large fov, k/m(+ controller), mods, etc

The difference won't be noticeabl within the first few years, but once the consoles start getting older we'll see PC exclusives with photorealistic graphics that won't be possible on the twins. Just a prediction though. PCs will always be a step ahead, but it requires more invvestment early on, so I can understand why most would rather play on consoles in the beginning of each gen.

The PC is still needed for strategy, tactical, adventure and non-streamlined RPG games. Think of a world with only FPS and Action games... Actually I guess console-only gamers already live in that world. Ewwwww.

Idiot console gamers said the same thing 2005. And look at the situation now. Please stop being an idiot, and join the rest of us in reality. The SAME thing will happen next gen.

Games on PC will be consistently 60+ FPS vs only some times 60 FPS on consoles and never above that. If you want 60+ or 120 FPS, PC will be your only option. Games will be consistantly 1080p + (1440p, 1600p and later on 4K will become more and more common) on PC, and only some times 1080p on consoles. If you want to do 1080p ALWAYS and if you want to do higher resolution panels or multiple panels, or the rift, PC will be your only option.

On top of all that, PC games will start to feature full, dynamic global illumination, even higher resolution textures and better texture effects. Better shadowing, larger view distances, better fields of view, more AI, more object/3D mesh detail, more particle and physics effects, etc, etc, etc.

It's the same story every new gen.

consolites: "What's the point of a PC now that x gen fo consoles is coming out? Graphcis are awesome!"

Same consolites 3 years later: "GRAPHICS DON'T MATTER ANYWAY PC ELITISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

PC Gamers: HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

Frankly I don't know how a complete market segment could be so idiotic, or clueless. Is it that these are just new console gamers, who weren't around in 2005? and don't even bother to investigate how the last gen turned out vs the PC?

There's more to graphics than resolution.

PC's can also get higher framerates and have much better controls.

Resolution isn't everything. There's framerate, mods, 3D, alternative interfaces, cheaper software, modular hardware... the list of positives for the PC isn't confined to a single pixel count.

well pc does have a lot of exclusives and mods and it does have good sales. People do like the better hardware as wel,l i see it as a bit of a money pit thou. We are in the post pc era and i have very little drive to buy a windows pc in this day and age. But you can still do a lot of other things on a pc you cant do on a console so its a all in one machine.

60 fps vs 30 fps

higher settings vs lower settings

4k monitors are already out while 1440/1600p monitors are not that uncommon nowdays

Mods vs No mods

Certain genres like strategy games consoles dont have

Cheaper games

If i was you a better question would be whats the point of consoles

I don't know about the gap shrinking. In 2004-5, when we saw the launch games coming out people were like "Wow! No way this could be done on the PC!" and it was arguable yeah. But now, no game that has been shown has had the same response.

PCs are upgradeable, Consoles aren't.

That's the only point of a PC - you can continually upgrade the system.

Any other questions?

Pretty much this. Next gen consoles will barely be able to push 1080p 30fps, but my PC has been playing that for years, and will only get more powerful while the consoles stay the same.
