The successor to the Xbox 360 console is on desks at an unnamed Electronic Arts studio, Develop understands.

The new hardware, sent to EA last month, is a very early build with no casing – it is in fact being stored inside a PC shell.

EA developers are getting to grips with the tech to create first-generation software, Develop has been told.

"Quite often when new consoles come around they're packaged into a PC shell, but actually what's inside is an entirely new console," a senior, trusted, well-placed said.

Microsoft has declined to comment. EA has declined to comment. Develop's source is not employed at either company.

The source believed, but did not have certain information, that the new Xbox would launch by the end of 2012. The individual expects an announcement will be made, at least in some form, at E3.
SHOW TIME

In March, new data revealed Microsoft was at the early stages in building the successor to the Xbox 360.

The platform owner had advertised new job vacancies such as Graphics Hardware Architect and Performance Engineer for the Xbox Console Architecture Group.

Microsoft's new hires will be "responsible for defining and delivering next generation console architectures from conception through implementation," the company said.

The language of the job vacancies suggested a reveal for the console is years away, but Develop's source says a shock reveal could be weeks away.


"Why let Nintendo steal the thunder in June [At E3]? It doesn't want to lose momentum. That's why I think Microsoft is rushing to make an announcement at E3."

It leads to suspicion that key next-gen projects are underway at Microsoft's own internal studios. Some project names Develop has seen would suggest a change of guard.
NEXT GENERATION

Specifications for the device are not available, for now. Develop understands that the hardware will feature enhanced support for Kinect with just a couple of alterations.

Over 52 million Xbox consoles have been sold since the system's launch in May 2005.

Microsoft's innovative motion controller, Kinect, launched November last year and has buoyed the console's appeal.

Ten million Kinect units were sold worldwide as of March this year.

"Kinect will keep the 360 going for a couple of years, but Microsoft knows that if it slows down now it will face trouble," the source added.

That does make sense yeah, i dont have a problem with a announcement being rushed, as long as the console itself, isnt rushed, get me some reliable hardware this tme.

I would like to see them show off a new console at E3 and hopefully both the 720 and Cafe (Wii 2) have similar power. Nothing would make me happier than to have Nintendo back in the power race and releasing cutting edge Metroid, Zelda and so forth. As for the Nextbox, I will consider getting one if it isnt a cheaply built machine like the 360 and has a few more exclusives that interest me.

Makes sense. The 360 has been out for six years now so they may want to update the hardware. Besides, when they say the 360 will be supported until 2015 they could have meant that at some point it will just get games like Barbie's ranch adventures or something.

I think this might be false...Didnt Ign, Kataku and other sites claim to investigate a MS next gen console which they figured out they dont have yet? I mean MS might be in the early stages of one but I doubt it will be anywhere close to being finalized by this E3 while Nintend's N6 (or whatever) is playable. This sounds like rubbish to me.

Well, we know for certain that Nintendo has a new console, so it is a matter of time either way. Guess we will find out soon enough.

Haha me neither, but 3 was one of my favorite games. This one looks awesome from what we have been shown so far. I don't see why this game, among others are not getting enough attention on here.

Fine with me. Assuming the rumor is true. Announce 2011, then a bigger reveal at E3 2012 with a fall release date 2012. That would mean seven years of xbox 360. That is more then enough time for a console life cycle.

I hope its true. I am sick of these garbage systems holding back the PC.

That's good common sense from MS, they have first hand experiance of how much it helps to launch before the competition so I doubt they'll give Nintendo too much of a head start.

I mean, the character models look really sharp and everything, but I think having everyone in snowsuits doesn't give you much distinction between any of the characters beyond their general build. I really hope there are some casual clothes you can pick.

I sound like I'm really nitpicking this game, but it does look MUCH better than I first thought, and a lot of what they're saying is encouraging. I just still think the realism is being over-emphasized in a few areas.

It makes sense, they don't have anything this year, so it seems credible that they are planning something, however i hope they aren't rushing anything, remember what happened when they rushed their previous console, not to mention it would put SONY in a very though position, interesting, no doubt interesting, this E3 is getting really interesting.

I still expect a new Xbox sometime next year. Hell it's been 6 years already. All of the hardware out there now is outdated.
