Indeed it will break records! The only competition is the Steam Machines but they wont get as much support. Sony really did a great job this time. Xbone is trailing but wont keep the momentum. PS4 is nowhere to be found as Xbone is everywhere. Graphically PS4 is up there with PC for sure but not exactly. Xbone is a jagged mess which is no better than Wii U. The PS4 has some slight issues but Xbone is one problem after another. If only we had some more games for PS4. By December this year we will see what happens. but considering there is no games the sales are very high.

Sales doesn't dictate the better console. It shows how many people out there bought the PS4/10 that "want" it to be good. Time will tell and right now there aint much to look forward too. Infamous SS? LOL.

It's not going to sell 4.2 million every month. I can pretty much guarantee you that. It didn't. sell 4.2 in a month anyways. It did it in 45 days. Xb1 sold 3 million in 38 days. Sales will start dropping like a rock come March & April. $400 & $500 is still a lot for casual gamers to pay for a game console. A lot of people will wait 1-2 years before buying one. It's not going to get anywhere close to 400 million sold. Fantasy Land is down the street, into that rabbit hole in the tree. lol!!

@FoxbatAlpha: I've been a long-time lurker on these forums, among others (it helps kill a day at the office), and you have to be one of the more ridiculous posters on these boards. If history is any indication, and we've seen it three console generations in a row, Sony will no doubt provide a steady stream of excellent, varied exclusive titles.

To answer the OP, I don't think the PS4 will reach the same heights as the PS2. The PS2 had very little competition (an underwhelming Gamecube and the first entry into consoles by MS) during its time of dominance. It received a ton of exclusives due to its market share that are now multi-platform titles. It was both the hardcore and casual console of choice. Today it has the Xbone to compete with, as well as tablets, phones, (lol) WiiU and a much more approachable PC ecosystem due to Steam.

That being said, I won't say it's impossible because the gaming market has only grown since them, but I do think it's improbable.

We won't know until a few years down the road

there aren't many factors actually. The only places that Xbox has dominated are NA and a tiny piece of UK but this is not gonna be the case now when Sony's at its best. The fact that the PS4 is competitive with the XB1 on NA basically sealed the deal. PS4 will dominate this generation no matter what.

The only reason the PS3 took so much to outsell the X360 is because NA wasn't buying it. In fact, the X360 has a 15 million lead over the PS3 in America but now without it the XB1 is destined to fail.

I believe that 155 million will be difficult to beat, but is possible with the PS4 if Sony does things to entice consumers along the way ie price drops, Playstation Now etc.

Nintendo actually wants to sell 9 million WiiU's in FY 2013. The LTD of the WiiU has to be around 12 million for this to happen which will not happen.

ThePS4 won't get 400 million(I know you are joking sweenix) and it won't get 100 million since it's appealing to the same audience as the PS3. Sony's messaging for the PS4 compared to the PS3 is a lot better but I really don't know if it will translate to a higher LTD than the PS3 at the end of this gen or an LTD of 100 million.

its going to be very tough to beat the PS2. unlike with the first xbox, this time MS actually know what they are doing. like the PC, the consoles are also going to have to deal with tablets and phones.

i think the spread of sales is going to be a lot more even like it was last gen so i dont see the PS4 beating the PS2. it should beat the PS3 in sales though.

Your math is off. First off the PS4 could have sold a lot more if not for one factor. Two, their is a supply issue. 3. People are not going to bu 4.2 million consoles every month in a half and even they would, Sony does not have the supply. Also, another company managed to grab some sales from Sony despite screwing up for like 6 months in a row.

Yes because we all know PS4 will be selling every month like is the launch month and it will also be selling like its Christmas holiday every day .

Lots of good points but consoles have always had competition. PS 2 had to compete with handhelds and other consoles. Tablet and phone gaming could be for many the gateway to console gaming. I dont know of anyone who would choose mobile over console. But I know a few people who played free shooters on their phones and ended up buying consoles to get a better experience.

Like you said though the market is growing. Most gamers who have less free time as they get older still game, just less and then theres probably 1,000's of kids a day who's parents buy them their first console.

Quite possibly and it's no coincidence that it started after SONY embraced the Live, Learn and Love lifestyle,.

My initial guess of both the PS4 and Xbox One selling 100 million is looking like it will hold up, but neither is going to break 200 million.

The chances of the ps4 selling at the same rate throughout the year is impossible, demand usually dies down after a a month of two.

Cows are spooging all over the place abotu sales now that sony sold 4.2 million. The front page of system wars alone has 7 threads on it already.

I am pretty sure that there isn't even a market of 400 million for all consoles combined.

Ps4 would be the highest selling this gen. How much it would sell remains to be seen.
