There seems to be a lot of people who "don't get it" in this thread. Nintendo has lacked 3rd party support because of their consoles power and that's it. At first the Wii had support because the PS2/Xbox consoles were still getting support. The Wii U had tons of 3rd party support until the devs moved to gen 8.
The issue with Wii U is it launched far too close to a new gen while being powered to catch up to gen 7. That was a HUGE blunder by Nintendo. (Not to mention the name fiasco and silly tablet gimmick). Launching the NX just 2 years after the PS4/Xbox One won't have the same result. It also allows Nintendo to release comparable or slightly stronger hardware at a competitive price. Why is it so hard to believe that Nintendo could sell 2013's low to mid range hardware for $299 in 2016?
They could for sure. It's just that with all the rumors surrounding some innovative way to combine handheld and console experiences it sounds like this will not be a standard console. Much like their previous consoles and handhelds have been far from standard. R&D costs a ton of money. How much? None of us know exactly, but I would estimate a quarter of the total costs (including the hardware itself, marketing, packaging, shelf space, producing, storage and shipping) might be R&D for a typical Nintendo platform. And we know they don't like selling at a loss, unlike their competitors. It's just that, even if it were PS4 level hardware, it's likely to be priced higher than that. Not that I want it to be. $300 just seems very low considering the pricing of their handhelds at launch, and their competitors who didn't mind taking losses and who make most money back with online fees and royalties that Nintendo doesn't know they'll get (but I think they'll go that route, and I think that would be a tremendous success).
I'd love for it to be amazing and $300, don't get me wrong. Personally I think they'll price it really high. Because of two things: There are no other consoles launching any time soon. And once you have a measurement for success, and you can produce them for less money, you can still sell the console to people who don't want to pay as much. Those people are not suddenly gone. As long as it's very competitively priced versus the PS5 and XB2, I could see them launch whatever this is at a very high price point. Especially if the NX means the end of their handhelds. This could be essentially 2 platforms in one for them. I actually expect the NX to be more like $500-$600 and a monthly fee, going down to maybe $400 before the PS5/XB2 launch, IF they are so serious about drawing back third party support and the NX becoming a primary platform.
Of course when they say they foresee Wii/DS levels of success in 3 years time... that seems to suggest a very low price tag. Because no matter how awesome the NX might be, how else could you sell that much, that fast? So maybe you're right.
What I rather want to see, is Nintendo pushing their own online PC platform like Steam, controlled with their own innovative hardware and with their own social network and filled with their own games. That's just because I see us moving past consoles in the next 10 years as PC becomes more user friendly, wide spread and affordable. But who knows. I'm not a prophet and I don't know how that would work with Nintendo's current business structure.
