Will continue to update as we get more numbers.

Microsoft has just revealed in advance of the January NPD report that its Xbox 360 console has once again topped the competition, selling 281,000 units in January, marking the 25th consecutive month that Xbox 360 has been the top selling console in the US.

Overall, more than $338 million was spent on Xbox 360 retail (including games, consoles and accessories) in January, while Xbox 360 held 44 percent share of the current-generation console market.

Xbox 360 sells 281,000 in US during January

Wii U sells 57K

Ni No Kuni takes the 11th spot

Call of Duty continues to top the charts as 2013 gets off to slow start

After an abysmal 2012 for video games retail, US game sales in January were perhaps slightly more encouraging (depending on your viewpoint), as total industry sales climbed nine percent to $834.7 million. Hardware sales increased four percent to $205 million while software (including PC games) was flat at almost $393 million. Accessories, however, jumped 30 percent to $256.6 million, thanks to Skylanders and point or subscription cards.

The news is tempered somewhat by the fact that January was a five-week reporting period for The NPD Group. NPD explained that a 'Leap Week' is needed every five to six years "in order to preserve the seasonal integrity of the months." The last adjustment was made in January 2007, and NPD said this is "consistent with the US-based National Retail Federation's (NRF) published Retailer Calendar, which most retailers and NPD follow."

So in truth, software sales for the month, when normalized for a normal reporting period, were actually down 19 percent, NPD explained.

With the exception of Capcom's new Devil May Cry, January saw no major releases to speak of on the top ten, so 2012's year-end hot sellers like Call of Duty and Far Cry 3 continued to top the charts. That said, new releases did fare a bit better than in past January periods. "While the number of new SKUs was relatively consistent for January 2013 compared to January 2012, performance of new SKUs this year versus last was six times as high, lifted by the success of titles like DMC: Devil May Cry and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch," observed NPD industry analyst Liam Callahan.

From a publisher's standpoint, Ubisoft fared quite well with three of the top ten - see the full chart below.

Just for comparison sake, 360 did 270K last year. An 11K increase over last year is pretty good, though expected.

Actually I find it rather shocking they still increase year to year sales. A 7+ year old console and probably the next console being launched this year but yet they are still able to increase.

It's actually not that surprising, for 2 reasons.

1. This NPD had an extra week

2. The 360 overshipped last year's Q2, meaning Q3 sales were lowered.

Still a pretty good month overall for it.

I guess MS is really good at marketing and making everyone believe a 7 year console is still relevant. Good for them. Wonder if this will help MS get out of 3rd place.

Haha Sony getting spanked again...44% of console sales and according to Gaf that includes Wii U ...lol ps3 numbers must suck ..but hey keep combining them with ps2 numbers and you almost avoid complete embarassment and fall into that grey zone of pathetic shamefullness

Correction on the Wii U quote:

Haven't done the math myself, but others are saying this puts the system in the 50k ballpark.

Those Wii U sales sound abysmal.

360 having a YOY increase is very surprising.

#23 Posted by Thefatness16 (4672 posts) -

LOL, Wii U sold 55K in a 5 week month. That is the definition of bomba.

Yeah, 55k in 5 weeks is all kinds of awful. Their heavy hitters in the Fall can drive up sales, but that's still months away.

#27 Posted by fernandmondego_ (3170 posts) -

I believe this now makes WiiU ahead of PS3... false.

More like a Gamecube, since Nintendo won't cancel the console.

55k! lol!! Nintendo needs to do something.

#34 Posted by percech (5237 posts) -
This is how things work with casuals. They don't care about the latest tech, they care about gimmicks, fads, what's trending, etc. Casuals are perfectly fine with using their old Wii for the next 10-15 years. They're reluctant on spending money on stuff they don't really care much for. Look at the abysmal software sales on the Wii for measure.
#35 Posted by Slashkice (13591 posts) -

Ni no Kuni was at #11 on the software chart.

Everything is back to normal:

  • 3DS doing pre-DS numbers
  • Dedicated gaming handheld monopoly (Vita out)
  • N64/Gamecube level home console sales

Possibly we'll see 3rd console curse for Microsoft, 720 to do significantly worse than 360. And a return to the glory days of Playstation.

I can't see the last two happening but will be interesting if true xD

Wii U is only doing 4K less than Gamecube at this time. So yeah, it's doing Gamecube #'s.

55K for WiiU?! It's doing Vita numbers! :o Ninty better get their sh!t straight!Desmonic
You take that back damn it. It's doing just fine, all consoles go through this. It's selling better than 720 and PS4 combine, just outsold them by 55K last month:evil: I swear people just hate on Nintendo:x

Looks like it will be ps4 or 720 this gen

Oh my god, this has been the same list of games for basically the past year with one or two more changes. I know next month probably won't have Metal Gear, Fire Emblem, Etrian Odyssey, or Sly Cooper 4, but can we please be open to new games?

Hard to tell, Gamecube launched in weird months so it's impossible to compare.
