After spending a few hours with the My Career mode as well as My Team, I can honestly say this is the best sports title I've ever played. NBA 2K17 has already jumped into my top 5 of the year. I know sports titles aren't popular here, but for folks on the fence, do yourself a favor and play this game.

Forza Horizon 3 got the exact same scores. Is it not a GOTY contender?

Of course it is. It's not every year a sports title should be under consideration though.

Damn, 2k just crushes Ea every year.

EA threw the towel ages ago for basketball games. They release an NBA Live here and there but not with any sort of conviction.

Well to EAs credit, Madden is also very good this year. The AI is still pretty silly at times and running the ball got worse, but overall Madden and EA are moving in the right direction.

EA sucks, they are trash.

NHL 17 doesn't even compare to what 2k puts into their sports game, I know it's different sports, but the quality of 2k is astonishing when you play most EA titles, they are so behind.

We're still in the beginning stages of the reviews with just a handful out right now.

Got 2k16 with the Humble 2k Bundle and it's been great. This is a company that knows how to make a sports game.

I bought this on PC so I can play in 4K but as always the PC version has issues. Some games are just better on consoles, and this is one of them.

Sorry, they only make games for real sports.

I saw the physical copy of that Gold Legend Edition with Kobe on it. I really want that thing.

But yeah, an NBA2K game has scored high here, I think as high as 9.5 in the old system, not even close to GOTY, but will take the best sports game. As for now, not a chance, just look at the nerd culture front page of Gamespot Entertainment (tm). Game doesnt have a chance.

What kind of crazy person spends $60 on a sports game?

Wish I could get into these games, but seriously, I couldn't care less about sports. They are literally the most uninteresting thing to me on this planet. Or close to it.

I have been skipping them since 2013 version. NBA 2K11 was one of the their best, then NBA 2K12 took a step back. 2K13 was better. 2K14 was terrible. I'm still playing 2K15 now. The game still seems to cheat though as you players stand around and watch the CPU make uncontested layups and easy midrange jumpers. 2K16 didn't feel right. Every shot seemed to come up short. The Prelude 2K17 was decent, but I hated that there were any team stats. I'll probably pick this one up at the end of the year for a cheaper price. NBA 2K series has been up and down and after 2K14 I refused to pay full price for one of these games. I'm glad you think it's great though.

I feel the exact same way about Pokemon and walking exploring puzzle games like Firewatch & Home. Love NFL Football & NBA Basketball games. Could play them for hours with friends or by myself.

I bought NBA 2K17 mainly because Live was delayed this year. The My Player/Career mode is great.. truly great. I applaud those features, and I was VERY excited to get into some online matches.. that is until I fired the online up... my god, what a waste a time, energy, and screaming... lol. What a laggy pos online... sigh.. Just like 2K16, 15 before that and so on. THAT is where Live 17 will come into play though. NBA Live 16 was WAY better online for those of us not rocking the top 20% internet speeds. It played very well last year and was a blast to play online. Getting into matches was fast an efficient. My Park? Horrible... lol. Full 1-2 second input lag. Just ridiculous. Now, don't think I am bashing the game, because I'm definitely not. It's very good at what it does RIGHT, and for those of you with great connections.. well, you will probably love it. For the OTHER 80% however, for online play we can look forward to Live 17 (more like 20% since no one buys Live even though it's online it MILES ahead.. lol). Anyways though, I love the presentation of the game, the new shot meter is ON POINT, and the progression isn't NEARLY as a grind as in previous years, and the packs are juiced. However, I'll keep playing the single player modes, but I am absolutely done trying to play online. It is awful, and I mean TRULY awful. Live will undoubtedly scratch that itch. See the thing is 2K single player modes is WAY better than Live, but Live online is WAY better than 2K. Looks like I am buying both again this year.... oh well.

I hope 2K will make football games again to put EA to shame.

I miss the 2K hockey games. I hate the EA NHL games.

NBA is such a high quality series, I really enjoyed what I played of it.

It's just that I really haven't found the time to invest in a game like that in a long time.

Looking at list of games being released and games yet to come, I kind of think this one actually has a shot. But given the gamespot staff I'm actually gonna predict another title: Battlefield 1. Not saying this as criticism, the game looks pure quality.

@WitIsWisdom: Live is better online because there isn't nearly the amount of traffic that 2K has. I would hope Live could handle the 500 players it has vs the 50000 2K is trying to accommodate.

Basketball game and a racing game, where are the real games geesh.

Not a chance. This year will have had Uncharted 4, FH3, Gears 4, Titanfall 2, FFXV, Battlefield One, and the underwhelming COD, though it always gets bonus points for being a Cod game.

So a sports game stands no chance.

Scoring 9/10 doesn't make something a "GOTY contender" on Gamespot.

Hell, being a sports game in general kind of disqualifies it almost immediately.

Unless its a single player RPG with awkwardly inaccurate sex scenes or weird weeaboo boy band characters, its not getting the GoTY nod.

Lots of gamers love to bash sports games for some reason, even though most of these same people never even play them and/or dont watch sports to even know how to judge if the games are good.

I think they hate sports games because they didnt participate in sports. They hate them just like they hate CoD because they are popular. Or they give flashbacks to getting swirlies by jocks in high school lol.

It used to infuriate me why gamers just want to be weird and like weird things, and why they're so socially awkward. But then I just gave and thought, fvck it, you guys are different and you enjoy liking weird things.

But what always got to me was why gamers don't enjoy sports games. A sports game is literally a game made into a video game; gameception, if you will. Sports and video games are way closer cousins than video games and art.

On the flipside, they may not appreciate good sports games enough, but they can appreciate mediocre geektastic video games like Dragon Age if it satisfies their weeaboo fantasies. Always hated Bioware for always baiting the virgins lol.

@GoldenElementXL : Another huge contender for best sports game of the year is Pro Evolution Soccer 2017, which many are calling the greatest football game ever made. It could snatch that award from NBA 2k17 just for being a 'return of the king' moment.

The 2K games have always had strong gameplay, so this doesn't surprise me. Basketball is never a sport I really invested myself in though.

FIFA's peaks were first peak of the modern era was '09, and the last peak was '12, and the general consensus of the critical reviews reflect that if you didn't experience it yourself. The consensus of FIFA 17 is definitely 'more of the same from last year'.

PES had a tragic last generation, and only started picking up in the last couple of years. But don't conflate "Best PES since the PS2 era" as "best football game ever", it just meant the series finally started to pick up again. But it's serious business now that there are comments stating "this is better than the PS2 era games", which essentially makes it the best football game yet.

I am talking to you in a way that assume you even play football games, or like sports games in general.

Not sure what Titanfall 2 or FFXV have to do with a GOTY discussion.
