IGN did it again. This kind of high end mental illness is usually delivered by Kotaku, but this time around, ign told em to hold their beer. So what do you think of that?😎IS RESIDENT EVIL 5 INCREDIBLY RACIST?

Re5 is my favorite one! Loved co-oping this one with as many people as would say yes. Loved upgrading my guns, collecting jewels and it looked beautiful. Racist? I don't get it.... Can someone explain? Never saw a single moment of racism in the game. Not an ounce.
@lundy86_4: You should make that thread. I don't even know what that is and maybe I would be able to find out.

Racism comes in ounces?😅

Remember, this is mental illness on the IGN part.
They first bitch about the fact that you're killing black people, but you're in Africa, so who the hell is supposed to be there? Secondly, they aren't just black folks, but INFECTED black folks, and since you're in Africa, well, you're obviously gonna be killing nothing but infected black people. NO SHIT SHERLOCK.
GamerGate 2.0 here we come. Surprised there hasn't been a thread on SweetBabyInc so far, considering what they have actively done.
Don't worry, i will make one, its needed.
I think what IGN said was "depicted as a nation of mobs and primitives who are violent even before their infection."
I remember N'Gai Croal saying "The point isn’t that you can’t have black zombies. There was a lot of imagery in that trailer that dovetailed with classic racist imagery."
He added "there were so many gamers who could not at all see it. Like literally couldn't see it."
It seems like there are some who are more familiar with the imagery than others, possibly due to being exposed to it more and being aware of the significance. It is probably possible to see something as an outsider that one culture considers racist, but not know why they consider it racist because you aren't aware of the significance of that depiction.

Sorry... It's resident evil 5 I shouldve said by the pound.... 😜
@lundy86_4: I don't really feel like it, I don't know why I should care because I don't know anything about it. Maybe I am better off not knowing?
@lundy86_4: Too late, my curiosity was piqued because it's like the 5th time I saw that name. Anyway now I know generally and yeah, who cares. I guess for anyone on the fence, don't bother. Same old outrage you already seen before.

Because there won't be any! Anyone making a thread on any SBI subjects, we will shut that shit down!
@TheEroica: It's nothing new, the game has been widely interpreted as racist since the first trailer. Most people gave it a chance until it came out though, but when it came out and people played the game, it turns out that yeah...it was pretty racist. Although most people joked around about how you were a western white guy with a light-skinned black woman who teamed up to kill zombies that all conveniently were only black people, in actually the black people in the game were portrayed using common racial stereotypes, even showing black people as savage before they turned into zombies.
When making the game, the Japanese developer drew inspiration from European descriptions of the African continent...as opposed to getting inspiration directly from the African continent itself. Which is a mistake for sure.
It's not impossible to remake RE5 without it being racist; but racists are not going to like the changes that would need to be made to make it not racist, most likely.
I never perceived the game as being racist myself. However if they do remake it and change it up I wouldn’t be bothered by that.

It's measured in grams... Duh

It is a solid co-op game, I had a good time running through it with my buddy.
It's not racist, virus outbreak just happened in Africa in resident evil 5 so most the zombies are african/black. I'm guessing that thier take..
I'm not going to watch that IGN video to find out.. I know it's rage bait
Let's be real about this. RE5 was never about racism when it came out. It was well received and back in the 360/PS3 era, we didn't discuss people of color, the game itself was fun and that's all that matters. It would have been racist if Capcom refused to acknowledge Black people and just filled Africa with White people if we're gonna go there.
In short, IGN is in it for the click-baits and they know it was gonna trigger folks just for the clicks. Capcom doesn't care what the Western media says, RE5 will get the Remake treatment but the truth is, it doesn't need it as the PC version does make the game more modern statues with the right tools.

Why?
Social cowardice.
Paradoxical. On one side, many gaming boards forbid any political discussion, but injecting games with political agenda and propaganda is A-OK. Hypocrisy truly has become paramount.
RE5 racist? Looked at through a lense it most propably was to some.
Some time ago i watched a Twiligth episode on youtube. The Paladin of the Lost Hour. Had a older white guy and a middle aged black man as protagonists. I read the comments at one point. And one said "racist trash".
@TheEroica: 5 is your favourite one, yeah I stopped reading after that.
We both stopped reading there, bro. Can't take him seriously, really can't.
If they do a remake, Sheva needs to be the protagonist and Chris is the backup.
But yes, the game had racist aspects. There is no debate on this.
Are there specific examples of racism in the game ?
I am honestly asking, I haven't played the game.
Its how Africans are depicted, more than just being zombies.
@hardwenzen: we LITERALLY went through this like four or five times.
Once when the game came out originally.
Then a few more times every year or three since.
Now I guess with remakes being made and this one potentially coming up, it's relevant again.
But c'mon man let's not make this out to be anything new or worse than what we've already been through at least a few times since 2009.
This is a nothing burger; you can move on as soon as you stop being outraged like the delicate little snowflake you are.

Yes, folks that are arguing it is racist say it is more of a "classic", non-malicious racism...the kind English colonizers had for native peoples in the 1800's, for example.
It's less "I hate you because you're black and different from me" and more "Oh, you poor creature, you're black and therefore less than human."
With that said, while it had racist elements in the traditional sense, it wasn't like...hostile in that regard.

I only heard something similar about RE5 like 10 years ago, and it sounded so dumb that i thought it was 4chan trolls🤷♂️

Exactly.
They're just digging up old news.
It's fun to ponder it I guess, but I don't think it should be taken serious. By either side of the debate.
For example, I'd love to debate how an old-school Japanese developer let their cultural biases against dark-skinned people subconsciously infuse racism into a video game. But I won't, because that is just kind of lame and it's as incorrect as it is correct or none of it, I don't know.
It's like reading old books of Tin Tin. They were racist but they weren't, you know, racist racist. Just a different time and culture. And they're still good if you can just sort of nod and go "Damn, that's pretty racist. Moving on". It's sort of like a test for yourself, to recognize racism as to not be indifferent to it, but to understand it's not that bad as to ruin something.
Well, this seems to be another example of projecting Western guilt for colonizing, enslaving, massacring, exploiting, and discriminating against Africans in the past onto Asian developers who had nothing to do with it.
If anything, the image of white soldiers shooting black zombies that the game presents seems more likely to offend those who wish to whitewash such history by invoking the atrocities committed by their Western ancestors than to offend actual Africans.
So, as far as I can tell, the game is actually racist? But if it's a remake it certainly can be fixed while keeping what made it great. Their angle should have been "how to fix" not that's unfixable.
That comment section with the MAGAS and GamerGaters must be a cesspool. A profitable one for IGN, for sure.
@kathaariancode: they could change the shooting and the zombies and put instead an interactive visual novel explaining systemic racism and intersectional feminism.
You could gain points by explaining why only white people can be racist and why being an heterosexual male is morally reprehensible.
The game should finish with an instructional video about how to self castrate in order to achieve moral rehabilitation and re-intergrate to contemporary society.
