You know, IF (yes a big if) microsoft and sony are actually deciding to go the wii route, or to have very prolonged life cycles for their current consoles, then I feel a whole lot better for the chances of the Wii U.

Option 6: Powerful enough to be a next-gen system successor to the Wii. I honestly don't know how much more powerful it will be than the Xbox 360/PS3. I'm guessing slightly.. and I don't think that means much. I'm hoping it will be a good leap, but I doubt it. Nintendo will finally go HD though, and I'm content with that at this point. :D

I think instead of having 2 pictures of RDR side by side comparing which field has more patches of grass, we'll have 3 pictures side by side comparing the amount of grass.

Isn't it already official that it's going to use a AMD R770 based GPU?

If that's the case, I don't see the need to speculate. It'll be about as powerful as a three year old high-end PC and much more powerful than the 360/PS3.

How do you come to that conclusion?. Even if you took the rumors seriously, which by the way, they all point to the WiiU being somewhere at the level of a HD4800 series. That already craps over the PS3/360, and it is by no means " Barely more powerful than ps3/360 ", but a good step up from those consoles.

dual core Intel pentuim 2.4ghz and maybe a 4850 are my guesses.Fightingfan
I'd say a quad core cpu at 3.0+ ghz. Every single rumor thats been said about the WiiU have not mentioned a dual core at all.

It has better hardware, but not by far and there will be a time until they optimize and fully take advantage of it, so it does not matter since PS4 and xbox 720 will be around before or by the time the difference is starting to show

I think it will surpass both the PS3 and 360 simply because I believe Nintendo will achieve 1080p and 60 fps in its games which neither the 360 or PS3 could. Also with such hardware prowess, the WiiU unlike the Wii will get support of the big devs and their big franchises like an actual Madden, BF3, CoD, RE and others.

Wasn't Nintendo downplaying the power of the Wii-U?

"So I don't know that we would be able to sit here and say that it's going to necessarily dramatically outperform the systems that are out now."link.

I think the main advantage will be less blurry and more defined visuals which comes with true HD gaming and the usual Nintendo polish with the exclusives. It won't be the generational jump some people are hoping for and it probably won't hold up against Sony and Microsoft's next gen offerings.

#3. I don't think Nintendo cares about "gens" anymore. They've failed miserably when trying to compete with Sony directly, so they went an alternate route. I am glad they've found a new market and a have been succesful again.

That being said, the majority of WiiU stuff I saw either looked like Wii stuff already available or has been confirmed to be PS3/360 footage, whcih doesn't make me expect much out of their next gen system.

I mean, if it was significantly more powerful than the PS3/360, why not show PC footage. If not, then they are only just getting into this gen as far as I'm concerned.

To put things into perspective, let's take a look at these charts.

Even the worst card in that round-up, the 9600GT, is substantially better than the 360 and PS3 GPUs (Radeon X1900/GeForce 7800GTX respectively).

Of course, we can't know for sure that the Wii U houses a 4870, but it's most likely something similar, and, as shown above, you just can't compare it to the other consoles' GPUs.

I have a ATI 5400 and is really far behond xbox360 in performance, so there is hardware that is weaker out there and cheap so they dont have some huge price for WiiU, considering the 6'' screen would already be huge in price

That's an extremely early WIP game. It doesn't show the full potential.

And your 5400 card was designed for 1080p decoding and audio over HDMI. It wasn't meant for heavy duty 3d applications. It's an HTPC card, not a gaming card.

if it can 1080p without any hiccups and all the bells and whistles it would be roughly 2x as powerful as current gen consoles.

My initial reaction is slightly more powerful than the 360/PS3 including the whole streaming thing which is bound to take more resources. I guess we will find out more when we start seeing some real games from Nintendo, but I think it will be an improvement over the ps3 solid 720p with most if not all games running at 60fps, and also some higher res textures and such.

It has already been exposed that it will be running games about like you see direct x 10 on pc which is better than current gen by more than just a little. Of course PC gaming is at direct x 11, I will for sure not buy it for graphics considering my video card puts that to shame.

There are some sites who have reported it will be around a 4830 for you to think of the ball park. For some reason I'm not able to show links but the story is on joystiq(i think kotaku too). It was just a week or so ago.

I didn't think the Zelda tech demo was that impressive. It looked great, and supposedly ran at a clean 60fps at 1080p, but it was bland, a distinct lack of detail.

Im sure the finished game will be fantastic though, and just what Zelda fans want, after the've finished with the Wii

I don't know why people continue to ignore stuff like this and just continue to speculate on "the power" of the Wii U. Not only has Shigeru Miyamoto suggested it'll be on par with the HD Twins, John Carmack has stated it's on par with them and Valve (I believe it was Valve?) suggested it as well. People who've actually seen this thing in action and know what it's about have already told us what to expect. Only in SW's I guess.

Considering the tiny size of WiiU, i suppose will have something like that card

AMD Radeon HD 4670M (55 nm process tech, 320 DX10.1 stream processors, 8 ROPs, up to 675Mhz) has 35 watts TDP. It can easily fit (TDP) within Wii U box.

Wii U box is about same size ViDock type box (external GPU for laptop) e.g. possible dGPU can go up to Radeon HD 5770 (800 stream processors).

My Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop's AMD Radeon HD 5730M (40nm process tech, 400 DX11 stream processors, 32 Z-ROP, 8 color ROP, 650Mhz) dGPU has 26 watts TDP. I have DIY ViDock connect to it.

AMD C-50/Z-01's Radeon HD 6250M fits within a tablet form factor e.g. MSI Windpad 110W or ACER Iconia W500. It's unlikely Wii U uses Radeon HD 5400 (80 stream processors) type dGPU.

Wii U console is basically ViDockbox + Radeon HD R700 GPU+ multi-core PowerPC (most likely PowerPC A2/PPEtype)CPU.

I imagine it will be like the PS3, but with higher resolution, better frame rates (more consistent too), less choppy games. The games could look almost the same, but play a lot better. Reason enough to buy. Like upgrading to a newer, better graphics card. Same games, but they play better. Totally worth it.

1080p @ 60 fps is *substantially* more powerful than either the 360 or PS3. If the rumoured specs are making it into the retail product, there will be a noticeable jump from this gen to next. It may not be as big as the PS3 was to the PS2, but it will be significant enough for a "gaming console" and not these wannabe PC's we got this gen from Sony and Microsoft.

It's not a game, it's only a tech demo and they can be misleading. Even though Nintendo has a track record of living up to their promises is regards to tech demos, I doubt it will be first generation.

It'll be next-gen capable for sure.

Btw your first option can go either way. If someone is using a computer from 2000, then yeah the Wii-U will beat it. However if someone built a computer with top of the line parts in 2011, then the PC will be better.

93BlackHawk93

Hermits are always talking about their specs, so it's up to their standards.

Well, that would be because its something you have to pay attention to when buying/building a PC. Its not as simple as a console's plug and play method. It takes a bit of brain power, and it's worth it.

I hope it has a 4830 or 4850. I know those are $50-90 gpus, but it would put the WiiU in a good position against current gen consoles, and give it a chance for 3rd-party support when the next-gen PS and Xbox release. They flip 20M WiiUs by the time those system are even on the market and that support is sure to be there. I doubt MS or Sony will make a powerful enough system next gen to match the difference between the Wii and the PS3/360 this gen.

in practice PS2 to Xbox level

Can be noticable better, but not game changing better

That doesn't say much in terms of it being more powerful than the 360 and PS3. I am sure the Xbox 360 and PS3 could do that right now. I think it shocked you because you finally saw a legit demonstration of Zelda in HD. Sure, it looks great, but it doesn't say much on how powerful it will be. Imho, if its as power as the PS3/Xbox 360, that will be good enough, seeing as how Nintendo relies more on visual art style than "realistic" graphics.

I was seriously impressed by that demo since I've already seen Link in HD. :P

And it's consoles. They've always had to go for art $tyle They've never had the horsepower for realistic Crysis graphics :D

Wow People actually voted more for slightly more powerful than the PS3 and 360,come on the R770 GPU is a way stronger GPU,than both the Xenos and Cell, and the CPU look quite powerful as well.

I believe Digital Foundry came out and said the Zelda tech demo was only 720p.

Didn't Miyamoto say it would only be slightly more powerful than the consoles out now?Kenny789
Yes, and people choose to ignore him for some reason.
