Considering the tech demos, I choose the 2nd option.

Slightly more powerful than the PS3 would be my guess.

It'll be next-gen capable for sure.

Btw your first option can go either way. If someone is using a computer from 2000, then yeah the Wii-U will beat it. However if someone built a computer with top of the line parts in 2011, then the PC will be better.

Barely more powerful than the PS3/Xbox 360. It's clearly not a 'next gen' system in terms of hardware. It's 'next gen' in terms of name only just like the Wii.

A good bit better than the ps360 but I'm not sure it's powerful enough to be up with the nextbox 'n such.. sure as hell shouldn't be at least. Should be back to the wii by the next consoles.

Good enough to play all PS3/360 games at 1080p with 60fps.

Next-gen. No way matches PC, but it's definitely stronger than the ancient PS3/360 hardware. A lot stronger imo. I'd say we're finally gonna get 1080p and 60FPS on consoles.

Cows/Lems are bashing it now, but once their next console comes out and is just on par with the Wii-U they're gonna praise the heck out of their platform.

You never know! Consumers are silly enough to buy another 360 even after horrible failure rates from the original. And with Ms going the new APU route, power isn't guarenteed. Sony will be the middle. On par with Wii-U (if it's as strong as it's rumored to be) but better than the next xbawx.

So powerful that the Xenoblade remake would make Crysis look 8-bit. :|
I'd buy both the remake and the original, if possible. Seriously.

-----

Haven't seen a console game that looks anywhere near as good as the Zelda tech demo, so I say it's powerful enough to avoid any whining from anyone.

I approve of your sig.

I'm surprised how good Xenoblade manages to look on the Wii. Defintely want all 3 of those games in the USA, but I much MUCH rather have them on the Wii-U with updated visuals in 1080p :D

I heard on the giant bombcast that nintendo specifically came out and said that it's approximately the same power as the ps3/360.

So that's the correct answer.

Third option. Miyamoto said he doesn't expect it to blow the PS3 and 360 away, so I don't see a major shift in tech.

Going off that Zelda tech demo, it blows away everything on PS3/360 and that was just a short demonstration in order to show off shaders and such. Add a little AA and the games are gonna look pretty damn sweet next year.

Phoenix534

Yep, of course not. If it were to blow them away, that would mean the hardware inside it would be very, very costly. That, combined with a touch screen controller (with camera), would make the console very expensive for consumers.

I think the Wii U will be slightly more powerful than the PS3, but that's it. The console won't be setting any new benchmarks in graphics, that's for certain.

But it's a tech demo. It didn't have to render AI, it didn't have to run any kind of anti-aliasing, it didn't even have to render that entire room if they didn't want, there was no player controller. When you don't have to run all the other parts of a game, it's not hard to show something that good. But actually making it a game is a lot harder.

Consoles then were on-par with PC hardware at the time. A console today will never do that because they jumped light-years ahead and produce far too much heat and suck too much power. Considering the tech in the Wii-U is about 3 (Will be 4) years old, I say it's not going to be that expensive downsizing the hardware. It'd be more expensive getting a brand new chip with powerful hardware (APUs I'm referring to.) The supposed chip in Wii-U, an AMD 4870, is far superior to what today's consoles use. Not to mention it just doubled the memory and might have even more (The reason we don't get games in 1080p. They simply don't have enough memory.)

Just because the 360 has a ten year cycle doesn't mean that they can't put out another system. Hell, the PS2 is on it's eleventh year and it hasn't gone anywhere.

"short demonstration in order to show off shaders." Yeah it wasn't full blown, but it was still far more impressive than anything we've seen on consoles do far. The Japanese Garden is a better example, but I love the Zelda demo more just because it's Zelda. Like all consoles, we need more footage/news before final verdicts.

The zelda demo already shows it is a decent amount more powerful than the ps360, especially considering it runs in 1080p. The Wii U won't be nearly as powerful as a strong PC, however.

Above the 360 and PS3 but bellow the next PS and Xbox. However, it's possible the next PS and Xbox won't be a so big step over the Wii U as some think they will be. It won't be anything like the Wii was, that's for sure.

War of guesses !!!

I guess it will be slightly more powerful than the PS3/X360 ... not by much, Ninty needs to take costs in account, especially it will be competing with the, I guess again, much cheaper PS3/X360 for a while.

The 1080/60fps can be BS just like Sony's about the PS3.

Probably quad core Power7 based CPU, RV730-like GPU (RV730 or Redwood), 1 GB GDDR5. About twice as powerful graphically as either the 360 or PS3. An Evergreen based part would make more sense since they are better configured for multi-monitor rendering/output. I don't see a Turks GPU out of the question, but I'm sure the system specs were closed well before Southern Islands made it's debut.

Why would they use a overpriced and slow Intel CPU? PowerPC is a much better choice for consoles.
