For me, not a biggie but yet another head scratcher wondering what Nintendo's decision making and end game is this gen?

Or is there some really good reason for this that I'm missing?

Nintendo appears to be using the inferior 50Hz mode for games on the European Wii U Virtual Console, whereas other regions can use the 60Hz mode.

You lot noticed the issue after downloading NES title Balloon Fight, which is available for 30p for 30 days as part of the service's special introductory offer.

PAL 50Hz versions traditionally run slower (due to old European TVs having a slower refresh rate), with compressed graphics and borders. A video comparing the difference in speed between 50Hz and 60Hz is below.

Nintendo of Europe used the 50Hz standard for games on the Wii's Virtual Console, too. This suggests that the Wii U versions come from the same code, although you'll have re-download a new version of each game to play it on the GamePad. These new versions will individually be made available over some time, Nintendo has said. Each will also incur a small additional cost.

The issue is particularly surprising because, more recently, all NES games on the 3DS Virtual Console (including Balloon Fight) were 60Hz regardless of region.

Gamers have reacted angrily to all this, flooding Wii U social network Miiverse with complaints.

"Good game, steal at 30p, but this has the PAL slowdown, so slower music and gameplay," one person said.

"This is the 21st century. Again with that 50Hz nonsense? Why must Europe still get the worst version?" another user queried.

Eurogamer has contacted Nintendo for a response - we'll update when we hear back

Considering a few PAL games (coming from a North American gamer in the UK) I played have 60 HZ capabilities, I too have to question this.

Even SEGA is using 60HZ versions of retro games in SEGA MegaDrive Collection.

I thought Europe used 50Hz in alot of things including electrical power (220V/50Hz). That's why my 100V-240V/60Hz alarm clocks and laptops (from the US) always fell behind when I was there. Then there's the different types of electrical outlet adapters I have to bring with me. I can't blame Nintendo for sticking with the least common denominator there.

true, but considering we've moved to the now DVB system for broadcasting, the PAL arguement for all intents and purposes are defunct considering we've pretty much finished the digital switch-over in the UK :P

It's mind boggling why the 3DS European Balloon Fight Game is 60hertz and the WiiU version is 50hertz.

Firstly, it was news and newsworthy to share in a place called System Wars !!!

Secondly, my OP and comments in this thread have been mild with no undue barbs thrown against the console or the sheep and only discussed why Nintendo may have done this and asked others what they thought.

Thirdly, and most important to you, I'm a lover, not a hater but...

Now you on the other hand just may be the hater and ya may have just proved it with the way you ended your post but it comes as no surprise since mah internal statistics on the subject of haters show 98.1416 % of the time that the person calling someone, in no uncertain terms a hater, is himself the actual hater and only wants to silence any decent. :o

You really ought to rethink your love and penchant to come to the rescue of your little plastic inanimate object and perhaps get out and about a little more as I'm certain you'l develop real relationships with real people and thus help you end this unnatural love affair with the Nintendo name brand and the gaming console they manufacture.

Well I can see how in terms of licenses it may be easier to give us the same PAL versions as before which are in 50Hz. For example, Starfox games are called StarWing (SNES) and Lylat Wars (N64) in the UK. But How much effort can it take to just give us the US version of most games. Some with simple mods.

If I didn't know about how much effort goes into porting games to XBLA and PSN I may cut them some slack. The worst thing is, VC was their idea, MS and Sony got it from them, yet they're the ones that put the least effort in.
