Now both our American and European forumites are able to get their hands on the wonderful PSP, you'll be wanting to get some games! Already the PSP has a large number of titles to choose from and it can be overwhelming knowing where to start, so I've compiled this guide to show off the top twenty highest rated games by Gamespot (yep, it's been expanded as the PSP continues to get cracking titles), as well as recommending the best title in each genre. There are also links to reader reviews if you want even more information, so you've got no excuses if you pick up a duffer now!

NOTE: Where a game's sequel has outscored the original, only the sequel will feature in the list. Well, you wouldn't want the old FIFA when you can pick up the new one!

The Gamespot Top Twenty (as of 29th July 2006)

1. Tekken: Dark Resurrection = 9.2

"Tekken: Dark Resurrection for the PSP is an impressive graphical feat that also delivers everything that makes the Tekken series so great." - Jeff Gerstmann

2. Daxter = 9.1

"The pint-sized Daxter is every bit as good as its console counterparts, bringing all the best elements of the action-platformer Jak games fluidly to the PSP." - Carrie Gouskos

Player reviews = average score 9.1

3. Burnout Legends = 9.0

"Burnout Legends is the best racer the PSP has to offer, and any PSP owner should definitely check it out." - Alex Navarro

Shleco says: "Whilst it's not quite as polished as Ridge Racer or Wipeout Pure from a technical perspective, the game is still a blast to play thanks to the more aggressive take on driving. Soon you'll be slamming cars into the sides and it gets as fast as it is furious with the later racing classes. With one hundred crash circuits and seventy five levels encompassing races, burning laps, road rage and the welcome return of the Pursuit mode, you'll be entertained for a long time. It really is the best of Burnout."

Player reviews = average score 9.4

4. Lumines = 9.0

"Between the beautiful presentation, the innovative gameplay, and the excellent single-player and multiplayer modes, Lumines may very well be the greatest Tetris-style puzzle game since Tetris itself." - Greg Kasavin

Shleco says: "While graphically it may not have the punch of other PSP titles, the fantastic music and the simple gameplay mechancics will entrance you for hours at a time. There are also some brilliant little puzzle modes, computer battles and time attacks that means you can have a quick play if you have ten minutes spare. Fantastic stuff - can you get the perfect 999999 score?"

Player Reviews = average score 8.6

5. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror = 8.8

"The first portable Syphon Filter is one of a rare breed for the PlayStation Portable--a shooter that offers not only intense stealth and action sequences, but also a control scheme that works." - Bob Calayco

Player Reviews = average score eleventy-two percent

6. World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 (aka Pro Evolution Soccer 5) = 8.8

"The PSP version of Winning Eleven 9 is almost indistinguishable from the PS2 game, but does lack a number of its features." - Justin Calvert

Player Reviews = average score 8.7

7. Wipeout Pure = 8.8

"Wipeout Pure is a joy to look at, and it's viscerally satisfying enough to please fans of the series and new players alike." - Ryan Davis

Shleco says: "It feels a lot more like the old Wipeout games and while the steering is initially tricky, the aggressive battling and sense of speed will keep you playing for a long time. It's a mean challenge too and you can get some free extra vehicles and tracks from www.wipeoutpure.com, which is a great way of eeking out every last drop of fun from the game."

Reader Reviews = average score 8.9

8. SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo = 8.7

"Fireteam Bravo effectively captures the spirit of previous SOCOM games on the PlayStation 2, making it easily the best shooter yet for the PSP." - Bob Colayco

Reader Reviews = average score 9.1

9. FIFA Soccer 06 = 8.7

"FIFA 06 not only addresses the problems of its predecessor, but also adds online play and an entertaining ball-juggling minigame to the mix." - Justin Calvert

Reader Reviews = average score 8.3

10. MLB 06: The Show = 8.6

"Despite not having a few of the features that its PS2 counterpart has, MLB '06: The Show for the PSP is a rock-solid baseball sim and a delight to the senses." - Frank Provo

Player Reviews = average score 8.7

11. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories = 8.6

"Liberty City Stories has its share of minor issues, but it gets enough of the GTA look and feel in there to be an exciting portable game overall." - Jeff Gerstmann

Reader Reviews = average score 9.3

12. MegaMan: Powered Up = 8.5

"Regardless of what you might think of Powered Up's ubercute presentation, there's no denying the addictive challenge the game provides." - Alex Navarro

Player Reviews = average score 8.7

13. WWE SmackDown! vs Raw 2006 = 8.5

"The first wrestler on the PSP is a worthy port of the acclaimed PlayStation 2 game, but its value is somewhat dubious to those who already own the original." - Alex Navarro

Shleco says: "The load times are a form of punishment in the seventh layer of hell."

Player Reviews = average score 8.9

14. Twisted Metal: Head-On = 8.5

"A colorful cast, a great presentation, exciting shooting action, and wireless multiplayer combine to make this one of the safest bets you can place when choosing your first PSP games." - Greg Kasavin

Player Reviews = average score 8.9

15. Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix = 8.5

"This "remixed" version of the original delivers almost everything that was great about the console versions, and with the inclusion of four new levels, the single-player experience has gotten even better." - Jeff Gerstmann

Reader Reviews = average score 8.7

16. Field Commander = 8.4

"Field Commander scores a direct hit with satisfying turn-based strategy gameplay, a lengthy campaign, and a healthy array of online multiplayer options." - Bob Colayco

Player Reviews = average score 8.5

17. X-Men Legends II: Rise of the Apocalypse = 8.4

"X-Men Legends II is a lengthy and fun adventure that anyone with a PSP and an interest in superheroes or beat-'em-up games will certainly enjoy." - Greg Mueller

Reader Reviews = average score 9.0

18. SSX On Tour = 8.4

"Despite being a mishmash of the two most recent console entries in the series, SSX On Tour manages to be a fun, fast-paced game all on its own." - Brian Ekberg

Reader Reviews = average score 8.9

19. Ridge Racer = 8.3

"Ridge Racer does a fine job of showing off the system's technical prowess while simultaneously providing more of the same smooth gameplay that still holds up after all these years." - Jeff Gerstmann

Shleco says: "One of the best titles for showing off what the PSP can do, the feel of drifting and racing furiously around the courses is fantastic. With the number of tours to complete and some tricky opponents on the tarmac, this'll also last you quite some time."

Reader Reviews = average score 9.0

20. Gradius Collection = 8.2

"More than a decade's worth of games from Konami's classic space shoot-'em-up series is contained in this great collection, which offers plenty of intense action, not just nostalgia." - Greg Kasavin

Players Reviews = average score 8.2

Loco Roco: The Shleco Preview!

We've probably all moaned about the shortage of great original titles on the PSP at some stage but now you can keep your trap shut, because LocoRoco has arrived (in Europe, anyway) and it's here to make you happy.

For those not in the know, LocoRoco is a super-cute, super-colourful platform game where you tilt the world instead of moving your character. This is simply done by pressing the L and R shoulder buttons. Click them both at the same time and you'll jump. The only other move at your disposal is to split up your LocoRoco into smaller blobs with a tap of the circle button, which allows you to navigate smaller sections. Once you've worked your way through just hold circle and the LocoRoco merge together once more.

The simple controls mean it is incredibly easy to get into (though at first I tried to tilt the PSP to move the environment - hmm) but you'll keep on playing. There can be no doubting it exudes charm with vibrant, imaginative and varied worlds as well as through the LocoRoco themselves. All of them react differently to sitting still, with different facial expressions and others squirming around on top of each other. Most endearing of all is their singing. At points of the stage you need a certain amount of LocoRoco to get past an obstacle or warn a collectable or perhaps find a secret. Tap circle to break them up, leave them for a few seconds and then stand agog as your little blob choir give it their all with a performance so sweet that it'd make Simon Cowell burst into tears of joy.

(Enjoying the screens? I've taken these pictures from the game itself. Tap Select at any time and you can take a photo of your environment. You can then tinker in the menus and put them in the photo folder of your PSP. From there you can make it a new wallpaper or upload shots on the internet to do Sony's viral marketing for them with a charm offensive. Damn, I'm an accomplice!)

While that may all sound a bit simple it is by no means repetitive. Varied environments are part of the reason (including slippery icy stages that aren't humdrum!) but there's also quite a range of tasks and obstacles to work your way through. You never feel like you are doing the same one thing, just mildly different each time. There are also plenty of secret areas to find, collectables from the MuiMui (cute little blue dudes) for your LocoRoco house (a playground where you can put different platforms together for a LocoRoco to goof around in) and LocoRoco to find. It's extremely unlikely you'll be able to find all 20 LocoRoco in a stage first time, so that makes the replayability factor surprisingly high. This means the game strikes a fine balance of being relatively easy through simple controls and no annoying time limits - it's also incredibly difficult to die - as well as offering a challenge for the more experienced player.

To me LocoRoco has become as much part of my Summer as the hot weather, strawberries and cream, and wasps. But LocoRoco is far better than all that. It's the biggest grin I've had on my face playing a PSP game since I go Lumines and Ridge Racer over a year ago. If you have the machine you really should consider getting this. The best platformer since Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat? Probably.

(Psst! Feeling flush and can't wait for September before getting a slice of LocoRoco lovin'? You can order from this British game store and get the game quickly. They ship to America and Canada and while it is expensive, other people who've used them in the past haven't had problems with them. Tempted?)

NOTE: The opinions of Shleco do not necessarily reflect the views of the Gamespot website. They would if the editors had any sense though!

This thread is now open for business - hope you find it useful and hopefully this'll cut down on some of those, "is twisted metal alrite?" questions we occasionally get flooded with! Remember to talk up the games you love - I'll be checking this thread regularly and updating it with your picks and recommendations!

Great thread.

I can't believe the discrepancy in scores for Ape Academy. I had been looking forward to that one, but only saw the Eurogamer before this thread and was disappointed. Maybe now I ought to at least rent it (when it comes stateside, I'm not in that much of a rush).

Hmm... Well I disagree with Tiger Woods being on there and Hotshots Golf not (though I know this is going by GS review scores). Tiger has much longer load times, its more true to the game of golf yes, but Hotshots is a lot more entertaining. The "arcadeness" I think is the reason why Hotshots didn't score as well by the gamespot reviewer. Hotshots actually has a higher user review score then Tiger Woods, plus more people rated it so, again I think it deserves to be mentioned at least.

If someone writes a few dozen words on why it rocks it'll get mentioned in the Reader's Picks. ;)

great work! very well done thread. i can't wait for other games in the fps and rpg genres, so we can get untold legends and coded arms off the recommended list.

The psp has only just come out and its being infested with pornography all over the psp. Movies are being brought out for over 18's and some people are finding it hard to let their kids get a psp since this porn infection on the famous new playstation portable. Im getting a psp and im getting pursuit force with it! It looks like a great game!

The PSP has great potential but when will there be a must have for the PSP. All I ever see is sports and racing games. I like these games but they just get old. I want to get a PSP that I can sit down and play for hours. There are some very good looking games coming soon for it. If anyone has a game that they cant put down that is for the PSP tell me what it is
