A new $399 40GB PS3 on its way?

According to Ars Technica, an insider source has confirmed that Sony will drop the price of the 80 GB PS3 from $599 to $499 this holiday as expected. Additionally, the company will launch a new 40GB PS3 model for $399 complete with a Spider Man 3 movie bundle.

The report claims that Sony will make official the rumor at this year's Tokyo Game Show later this month in addition to dropping the price of the PS2 to $99.

Sony declined comment when contacted by GamePro.

This is probably the best deal ever . $400 for a 40GB PS3 with Spider Man 3 Bundle included , PS3 will sell like hotcakes

The Playstation 3 will be number 1 with sales this holiday season.

Since I already have one, no biggie. The more PS3s out there, the merrier.

Mine might not be the latest, greatest version but I've had it since launch, I have the EE, and it works perfectly! :D

I doubt it. The new 80GB units don't have the EE.

That being said, I don't think it's grounds for scouring eBay for a launch day 60GB unit. We buy new consoles for new games. And the software emulation should cover most if not all of the big titles that were on the PS1/PS2. I just happen to enjoy FF8 a lot which at last check, did not run on EE-less PS3 models.

but isnt the emulation good but not as good as the ee though cause i sold my ps2 and i only kept 3 games and all 3 will on the 80gig and hopefully it will play on the 40gig if it true

Nope, as far as i know if this goes ahead it will ahve the same graphics as the later model.

Its basically like the difference between the HDMI 360 premium and elite.

it might help sales, but the x360 still has halo 3 and mass effect this holdiay which believe it or not, is more of a system-seller than warhawk and HSstygiansanity

LBP isn't coming out this year. I thought PSN would have it but apparently they aren't doing that anymore I'm not 100% sure though. And as if Warhawk and HS are the only games coming out this year...UT3? Ratchet and Clank? Uncharted? all killer apps to me.

This will boost sales for sure, theres a lot of people out there (casual gamers) who just dont need 80 gb of space and are not willing to pay for it, and are more than content to settle with something in the way of 40 gb. Da_bomb101

The problem here is that you don't spend $400 for a game system as a casual purchase. Maybe $200....not $400. So, then, of those NON-casual purchasers....who wants to shell out $400 for the 'weak' system? Most people who will spend $400 for a game system want the best. The other problem is that they are changing models every 3 months, why would you buy it when, if trends keep up the system will be $299 in March?

I don't think a 40GB model at $400 will make much difference. If Sony launched with a $400 system last year, they would be in alot better position now. This year Microsoft won't just match the price, but they also have a wall of great games that Sony is going to run into.

At the same time, who wants to shell out $350-$450 (depending on which model you want) for a system that may not last 6 months?

A price cut to $400 would go a long way towards hooking some customers who may have gone another route.
