For any newbies to the thread, heres the lowdown

-OP came, got flamed for using DailyMail as a source

-Little to no sympathy shown towards the girl or her parents, instead GS blames them (I do too)

-Thread goes off topic and drifts into us seeing LJS (Oh god) and this dude who is clearly a socially awkward person (and potential Antisocial person) argue about... damn Idek its so boring

-Coolbeans calls his opponent a simpleton - shots have been fired

-We discover that this El guy is the type of Parent who will cause you to have little to no friends and miss out on everything you should experience as a teenager.

[QUOTE="Wolfetan"][QUOTE="El_Zo1212o"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] Too sheltered....at some point parents need to show their children they trust them. And children need to learn to survive in the world.

No, they absolutely do NOT need to show them any such thing. Kids are stupid. They think they're indestructible and so do stupid things. I learned everything I needed about surviving in the real world from my business and life skills classes in high school- how to apply for a job, how to read and understand contracts(especially for rental agreements) and how to pay bills and balance a checkbook. This is really astounding to me that what I've said is causing such a riot on here. Are you people seriously this staunchly opposed to the idea of supervising your kids' activities online? Not giving a shit about that is how you end up with kids swinging by the necks in their bathrooms and screaming F*CK every 3 seconds in online matches. I find it more astonishing that you people would willingly subject your kids to the internet- where a kid could find him(or her-)self looking at gay porn for misspelling a free email webaddress- rather than countenance the idea of limiting internet access to a single computer in the common area of your home.

I'm 14, and I come home from school everyday, and wasn't allowed out after dark. I haven't gotten into any trouble, ever(like with school/law). My parents stopped looking at my history by the age of 10, and I'm doing alright. Also, by the way, El, there are no more life skill classes in HS or any where, atleast where I live. There is nothing to teach you anything you listed.

If you're gonna call me a letter, call me "Z." Life skills was the single most important class I took in highschool. Sure the teacher was queer as a three dollar bill, but he was effective. I don't rightly see how they can call your education complete without it. But then, nowadays public schools are trying to push everyone into college- it seems like they're trying to accomplish this by leaving kids ill-prepared for life without it. As far as your web browsing history, I'm willing to bet that if they ever did monitor it in the first place that they're still doing so now, but are being more discrete about it to provide you the illusion of trust. I commend them. @Coolbeans: Call me simple if you like, but I know you're wrong. Someone doesn't get bummed out enough to kill themselves without being bummed out enough to be noticed first. "We had no idea" is something parents tell themselves to try and cover over their own sense of guilt. It may work to convince the other people who hear it, but it'll never work on the parents themselves no matter how hard they try to convince themselves.

[QUOTE="JustSignedUp"][QUOTE="Omni-Slash"]maybe the "Heartbroken parents" should have been know what the hell their 14 year old daughter was doing on that website.....LJS9502_basic
what a ridiculous thing to say, did your parents know what websites you were going on when you were 14, better yet did u want them to know what websites you were going to? i sure as hell didnt

This thread is odd. Most of the replies want intense parental involvement in everything......and I doubt those same people told their parents everything.

Your response is odd. As a parent it's your job to know everything about what your kid is doing. And especially to know everything about what they're hiding.

I doubt it, unless my dad does it, which I couldn't see him doing it either. As for my mom, maybe my mom is being fake to me? But she is not one to invade onto privacy. Since she enjoys privacy very much, I don't think she would take it away from me..

Uh no. Children do deserve some privacy....you shouldn't know everything they do. Parenting means you provide necessities and teach the child how to manage the world....if you hide them away as your parents obviously did....you've done a disservice to your child. And it will show.

Christ! You'd think from this thread that OT's idea of good parenting is letting your kid run wild, look up pornography and get hooked on smack for their gang initiations.

If you learned from your life skills class, then you aren't particularly sharp. If what you learned in that class is what you consider to be very important, which I believe you did, then consider the previous sentence to be an understatement. Your apparent lack of acuity is corroborated by your impression that people are aware that their kids are might kill themselves and apparently choose to completely ignore it. Do you actually think before you type, or are your posts actually the feel-driven, unprocessed dribble that they appear to be?

El stands a pretty solid chance for being locked up for child abuse and raising kids who'll turn out criminals. Anyway, this thread has been fun, but I can really only tolerate so much of this sh!t. Ciao.

I only resorted to name-calling after you repeatedly failed to even once write something worth a thought. A man can only take so much of that.

El Z summed up in two pictures

grin758l.jpgGMACH404.pvw.jpg

You can't argue with overprotective parents its impossible. Instead of being your regular parent and giving your children the happiness that you couldn't get + the things you couldn't get as a child, these parents make their children grow up the same way they did. The cycle will never end.

-Always bases things on how he sees them, he struggles to understand other POV`s. In short - thinks hes right all the time

1. You don't know anything of the sort. 2. That's fair, though I went for quality over quantity. 3. Okay. 4. In your opinion. 5. I prefer the term 'properly protective.' And nice try- sunshiny southern California. 6. I modelled my parental self after my dad- who raised 3 sons by himself, none of which ended up dead, jailed or hooked on drugs.

your kid will hate you

From the ages of 14 to 22 or so, yes. He probably will. But that's okay- he'll be alive, clean and free to hate me. As a parent, that's all that really matters. And one day he'll come around, just like I did with my dad.

Not mine- your parents'. And if that's true, I no longer believe they do check up on you, which is a god damned shame, because obviously they still need to. @Coolbeans- not "ignore," "deny." And if you intend that your side of our little debate here is to devolve into flowery name calling, I'll bid you a good day.

-Is socially awkward

-Didn't have alot of friends in School

-Somehow managed to get a girlfriend (Look at how awkward he sounds)

-Isn't a great Parent.

-Clearly thinks that PARENTS will know when their child wants to commit suicide.

-Is an Overprotective parent, he must live in Texas.. North Texas

-Always bases things on how he sees them, he struggles to understand other POV`s. In short - thinks hes right all the time

Hey, el, what would you do of you caught your teen watching porn?DavesAlt
At 14? Give him a moderate beating, stand him up against a wall for an hour or four and dismantle his computer. With a sledge hammer.

ThisIsTwoFace
If it isn't broke, don't fix it. But a more serious reply: You act like my upbringing(and that of my son) would, by necessity, preclude happiness. Just like any kid there are good times and bad. There were times I was afraid of my dad. But that fear kept me away from things I may have wanted to do that would have been even worse for me. I was too young and stupid at the time to realize this, or believe it if I did. I am profoundly greatful for the way my dad raised me, even when what he did was wrong. It made me who I am- a productive member of society. Judge me all you like- it makes no difference to me because you're just words on a screen.

All evidence to the contrary. @lostrib: Because it's called adult material for a reason.

There used to be a difference between physical discipline and abuse. People have decided there isn't anymore. The world has changed because of it and not for the better. So I'll do things in my house my way and you can do things your way in yours. And what happened to 'ciao'?

pretty sure the term "moderate beating" falls under abuse. of course abuse isn't just physical.

In between episodes of the show. You can do things your way until you've crossed criminal lines.

Fine. Because it twists a kid's head around and makes him lose focus on what ought to be important at his age. Same reason I don't let him play games every hour of the day he isn't otherwise occupied. Except porn is more insidious- it takes hold with much less exposure.

You have no idea what the term 'beating' denotes in my mind. @coolbeans: What makes you think I intend to "cross criminal lines"? How I raise my son, and how I discipline him is my business and not the government's.

You just described an instance where you would "beat" a kid. Child abuse is the government's concern, and fortunately your opinion on that is inconsequential.

Luckily, the government cannot invade the privacy of my home. And again, you have no idea what I mean by a 'beating.' It'd be different if I'd said something like 'beat him until he couldn't move' or 'beat him within an inch of his life.' For all you know, I use the word 'beat' because I despise the word 'spank' as a noun.
