"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll. The reversal follows a month of attacks by McCain, who has questioned Obama's experience, criticized his opposition to most new offshore oil drilling and mocked his overseas trip.

The poll was taken Thursday through Saturday as Obama wrapped up a weeklong vacation in Hawaii that ceded the political spotlight to McCain, who seized on Russia's invasion of Georgia to emphasize his foreign policy views."

Discuss.

What's there to discuss about polls? Really don't mean anything at this point. Especially when it is just a few percentage points, probably even within the margin of error.

Maybe McCain will appoint Obama as his official orator. Seeing that is all Obama is good at.

That's nice, but Gallup and Rasmussen are the most credible polls. Obama is still 1 point up in both of those. But still, it's good to see McCain making progress. Hopefully Obama screws up and makes a terrible VP selection.

Vancouver has a much higher average quality of living than most of the US.

Cut to five other polls that have Obama leading. National polls aren't useful in August, if at all.

I find this more useful than national polls. Sure, they're tied nationally, but we go state by state, so the national polls are basically moot.

I don't really see the point in comparing polls at this point in the race. I mean, a lot can happen between now and November, a lot of time for people to change their minds. Becides, didn't Kerry have like a 10 point lead over Bush at this point in the race?

That is how the candidates advertise themselves...by bashing their opponents and unfortunately people base their votes off of these adds. None of the candidates actually tell you what they want and what they will do in their adds..it is pathetic.

That was a good point stated earlier. A national poll is not very useful. State-by-state polls are more useful, because that's how the election is decided. Remember that Gore won the popular vote, but lost due to the electoral college? The swing states are where the next president is decided, not by national popularity.

Stronger manager of the economy?

I find it scary McCain would use the Russo-Georgian conflict to emphasize his own views on foreign policy. Bush has gotten the US engaged in this debacle with Russia, you'd imagine McCain would want to downplay the fact his mentor is driving the world towards a major crisis.

He comes across as flopping back and forth on many issues, he doesn't respond well to candid questions (meaning he only speaks intelligently when he has a speech in front of him). Personally, I never liked him from the beginning when he was barely a cfew years into State Senate. Then I heard some of his takes on the issues and was flabbergasted at how much rhetoric he spoke with. No clear answers when asked. He just seems like a Ferrari with nothing under the hood...yeah, it looks nice, but will it perform?

Okay, time for a few myth-clearing:

Neither candidate supports gay marriage.

However, neither candidate is pulling for the ban of gay marriage. They morally oppose it. And as a gay man, I have no problem with that.

On gay adoption: McCain opposes this as well, but he wants to allow the states to decide, which is how it should be anyway.

1. It's not a good thing. Abortion may not be the best solution out there, but it's not that evil. Having an abortion in the early stages of pregnancy (Don't support late term abortion unless the health of the mother is in jeopardy) is better than having the baby be born to a negligent set of parents. And just because it's banned, it doesn't mean it will stop. It will continue in a less sanitary, and a lot more dangerous setting if it were banned,

2. That was 2004. and AZ banned Same-sex marriage, the state he represents. I'm not saying he will try to make gay marriage an election year policy, but he wants to keep the "traditional" family.

3. Even a limited influence in economics, I want someone who knows what he's doing. If he has good advisors, fine. But he himself isn't very re-assuring. Especially cutting taxes in the current economic state that we are in.

1. Adoption. The banning of manslaughter hasn't stopped manslaughter, but we aren't going to be opening up any murderhouses any time soon.

2. As has been stated, McCain believes these things should be up to the states, and not to the federal government.

3. I highly doubt Obama knows what he's doing. Raising taxes like Obama wants is going to put people on the street.

I would have to disagree with you there.

I'm for a smaller government.
