Islamic scholars arent like Biblical scholars who study the actual text in an academic way, they engage mostly in writing their own laws based on their interpretation of the text. I often see people use a quote from and say "look at how crazy muslims are.BossPerson

Yeah, I wasn't talking about academic scholars- but similar religious clergymen scholars. Academic analysis doesn't fit two said points: they aren't accepted by believers, and they come out of completely alien premises.

EG- The jewish religion is unrecognizeable from the Torah. The Talmud, which is a collection of interpretations of earlier work and the bible itself, is the most important binding norm in Judaism.

They believe they can (1) change it to fit the times (2) re-interpret it in specific points in history.
It's like case-law, really. For example, today- religious jews consult ~shoulchan arouch for anything. That's an interpretation of the Talmud.
That's why you can have all the stoning and sh!t in the OT, and have the jewish religion forbid the death penalty, slavery and polygamy in the 20th century.

--that's besides the point: a 'holy' text can't hold it's full meaning in plain view. There's always interpretation. My contract law I professor started his first lecture (about contractual interpretation), my first year, with this quote from the Hobbit:

And its a major problem among Muslims that they view the Quran as the literal word of god. It holds them back from developing and modernization.

At least Christians and Jews can slowly abandon the crazy stories of floods and whales as being metaphors and such. I have Muslim acquaintances who try to deny evolution/

i guess im 10 pages late....and yes, we do go crazy with the food when we break our fasts at night :P but then stand in a 2 hour taraweeh prayer after it with our bellys full.
