I was going to post this in general games discussion at first but there's no option for a poll. So I figured why not here?

Personally, Super Mario 64 is still my favorite. And this isn't for nostalgic reasons, I find the game to be more fun than the new Mario games despite that it is a pretty old game.

Hey, I'm with you on that. I just bought Super Mario Galaxy 2 today, and even though I'm not too far I already think it's heaps better than the first. Come to think of it, I almost didn't buy SMG2 because I didn't like SMG that much.

Super Mario Galaxy (I have yet to play its sequel, though). The other two aren't nearly as good.

Mario Galaxy, as of now. My copy of Galaxy 2 hasn't arrived yet, Sunshine was an abomination (outside of the awesome FLUDD-less levels), and Mario 64 isn't very good once you get past the nostalgia.

I don't think nostalgia is a factor for me for Super Mario 64. If it was, I wouldn't be playing it to this day. I think Super Mario 64 is a well crafted game, despite its flimsy camera. There are many games I feel nostalgic towards but can't really enjoy these days, some examples would be: Goldeneye 64, Fallout, The Legend of Zelda 1&2, Ninja Gaiden, etc. Nostalgia just doesn't save them when I play them.

Well I haven't bought Galaxy or Galaxy 2 yet so out of Sunshine or 64 it would be Sunshine. Mario 64 is a good game but the other platformers on the N64 like Banjo Kazooie or Donkey Kong I found to be a lot better. I really liked Sunshine and thought the whole tropical theme and FLUDD was a very interesting addition the the series. I still go back and play Sunshine just to check out some of the levels again. I am going to try to pick up Galaxy tomorrow so these opinions could change.

I guess I'd have to say Mario Galaxy.

I thought Mario 64 was OK but over rated, and I've never really played sunsine or Galaxy 2, but I really loved Galaxy

funny, i just noticed now that my order of preference is the same as the "evolution line". galaxy first, then sunshine, then mario 64. all 3 are on a technical tie, though. and i haven't played galaxy 2 yet.

If you want us to know your favorite, then yes. Anyways, I believe the games have improved chronologically. I'll take Galaxy 2 over the original, that over Sunshine, and Sunshine over Mario 64.

I beat both Galaxy and 64 100%, beat Sunshine but not 100%, and haven't beaten Galaxy 2 yet, but I have over 70 stars. Just wanted to mention that to emphasize the fact that I haven't had the same kind of experience with all the games, but have played enough to have a general idea. Right now, I'd have to say Galaxy 2 > Galaxy > 64 > Sunshine. But Galaxy 2 could potentially move down if the quality of stars greatly decrease from here. And I've been meaning to replay Sunshine, since I've gained a greater appreciation for a few of the things that it did, even if it did have flaws, so that could potentially go up depending on how much I enjoy replaying it.

Until I've had time to go through the entirety of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and have had time to think about it (just got it today and 45 stars into it), I'll still say it's a toss-up between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy as my favorite 3D Mario game.

For those that like Mario 64, isn't Mario 64 DS the definitive version anyway? I enjoyed that much more than the crunchy control stick, blurry textured and bad sound of the original...

The graphics were definitely better, although it ran at a lower resolution. I doubt most people would agree the controls were better. They worked okay, but it was meant to be played with an analog stick, although I did fine the princess slide easier with the d-pad.

Galaxy 2 > Galaxy >>> 64 >>>>>>>>>> Sunshine First 2 Galaxy's are pretty close but I'll give 2 the edge. For it's time 64 was a great game but it had some flaws (hated that camera, hated those bland graphics). I just did not enjoy Sunshine one bit, a good game but not up to Mario standards.

Your choices are unfair as SMG should be just one. I voted for 2 but like them both. For me SMG is not really SMG 2, is like a one big SMG all the way. I can't decide between the of them as I think both are master pieces

God no. I don't think I've ever played a game that controlled as badly as Super Mario 64 DS. It should never have been ported in the first place. An abomination.

It's tough to say... I guess SM64 was the best in the context of its time period - it was my first 3D game and totally blew me away, but SMG2 is a way way better game by todays standards and still manages to inspire awe and wonder reminiscent of the SM64

As of right now it's:

SMG > SM64 > SMG2 >>>>>>>>>>>>> Sunshine

I'm about 70 stars into SMG2. It could move up depending on how the rest of the game holds up.

Some of you guys are a little too hard on Sunshine. It was generally, a departure from the series, but it was still a good game. I kind of miss being on solid ground, bring the series back to Earth please, lol.

Yeah agreed, while I don't think sunshine is as good as galaxy or 64 it is a great game in its own right. Loved how all the stages were big and the larger emphasis on exploration, gave the game a lot of replay value.

SM64 is my favorite BECAUSE of nostalgic reasons. Also I liked the castle, it was a maze where you could find something rewarding behind every corner!

Haven't played Galaxy 2 yet (it isn't out in UK for another couple of weeks) but Mario 64 is still my favourite. Hated Sunshine at the time it came out, tried it again recently and hated it even more. :-P

64 is probably the biggest game that has been released in my lifetime in terms of the impact it made when it was released, so it's hard to claim it isn't nostalgia talking, but for me 64 felt more immersive when you were running round the castle, exploring etc. The castle setting was great, and I kind of wish they could go back there for the next game. Galaxy was great and full of cool gameplay ideas, but too easy until the last few stars and there were too many levels that were completely linear. Looking forward to playing the sequel.
