Nintendo has finally set a release date for Super Mario Maker 2. The game will launch on June 28, the company just revealed.

Super Mario Maker 2 was unveiled during the last Nintendo Direct in February. At the time, Nintendo only confirmed that it would release sometime in June.

Here’s today’s full announcement:

When you put together your upcoming summer plans, make sure to add “Create the Super Mario course of my dreams!” to the list. That’s because Super Mario Maker 2 launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch system on June 28, just in time to take the game with you on all your summer travels.

This full-fledged sequel to the original groundbreaking Super Mario Maker game for the Wii U system lets your imagination run wild as you make and play your own Super Mario courses using new tools, items and features.

With an incredibly intuitive toolset ready to be explored and experimented with, including the new ability to create slopes for the first time, nearly anything is possible in Super Mario Maker 2.

I think it's gonna be a great game. I just think the timing is bad for me to get it anywhere near launch.

I've gotta be a little more selective with Switch games going forward, I think. Fire Emblem coming a month later makes me lean towards that.

Not my cup of tea, but good for those that are looking forward to it.

Will not be getting this. I am not a fan of any of the New Super Mario games and I feel like this game will be loaded with meme/joke levels like Smash Online currently is.

@KBFloYd: Well it's two more months, a little more than. I get what you meant though :P

I really would like to play it, but like I say I guess I kind of have to make some decisions. Maybe by the time I get it some pretty cool stages will be built already.

When I think about all of the money I've put towards games over the last few years, it really was irresponsible. I think as I'm getting older here I just can't keep justifying it. I know I will sit and play Pokémon, I am sure I'll sit and play Fire Emblem also. But I see my track record with a lot of games, I see how I'm kinda off-and-on with Smash Bros., and haven't had the time or energy to restart Zelda again yet. Just gotta realize the full $60 I'd spend for SMM2 would be better off used for something else.

Don't mean to get so off-topic, I just think it's a point that becomes clearer as a gamer with every passing year.

@Ovirew: I know if I bought SMM2 for $60, I'd play about 20 hours and never touch it again. Better off just not buying it at all and getting a different game I'll actually enjoy.;

Glad I held off U Deluxe. This is the 2D Mario game I've been waiting for.

Well at 3PM PST/6PM EST today I guess that SMM2 Nintendo Direct is dropping.

Like I've mentioned before, I would get it, but I think I have too much else to look forward to with gaming this year. I have a feeling that this will be the best iteration of Mario Maker though, and maybe a later purchase for me.

Amazing direct, cant wait to get this one and start churning out some soul crushing levels lol. I really hope they add secret exits(even if only for SMW theme) and the ability to link levels. Even if they capped it like 4 levels to be in line with the original, I would take it.

I never played the first one as I owned a Wii U for a very short time. It's such a fun concept but really, I don't have many people around that would be willing to play or help me create levels. So who knows if I'll pick this up.

Not sure on this one, rather just get a really good Nintendo made Mario game, but it would prob end up like Mario Bros Deluxe and (be painfully average) anyways.

@uninspiredcup: I wouldn't mind some kind of Odyssey sequel. But I doubt it.

I just watched the Direct, and I'm calling it - this will be one of the best platforming games ever to exist.

Seriously, the amount of content here is amazing. From the drybones shell power-up, to the moon that follows you around and helps you out unlike that prick sun, right on down to playable Toad and Toadette in every graphical representation in the game....it's loaded with tons of stuff to make fun and interesting SMB stages.

It's going to be a very tough call. Like I keep mentioning, we've got FE a month after this, and Bloodstained coming out shortly before. I really wish one of these games could have come out earlier in the year, because they're all kind of competing for our Summer.

I can't wait for the game. I put a lot of time in the first one. I'll be getting it at launch for sure. I have it on pre-order, in fact.

So I'm seriously debating if maybe I should hold off on Fire Emblem and get Mario Maker instead for now.

After watch the latest Nintendo Minutes, I'm excited about making my own stages. I feel like MM would add a lot of variety to my collection.

I'm excited for FE, but I also want to get DQ11 this fall. That will likely have less copies than FE. And I might get a lot of JRPG burnout. Plus I am most looking forward to Pokemon later in the year.

Not sure. Will probably debate this now. I guess if I'm being honest I am a little more pumped for Mario Maker than Fire Emblem atm.
