I have been wondering this for a while and don't want to test it myself, does anyone have any stories or evidence? And if it is only water resistant what is the extent?

No I mean they won't break if you drop a little water on them but keep doing it And rust will happen

As far as fully submerged I would never Try that

@mandzilla: I think they've made them taste intentionally bad to stop children from eating them.

I knew the cartridge tasted bad already, (it was the first thing I did when I got my first game, wanted to know how bad it was) I just didn't consider the fact that the taste would rub off to my lips, so I licked my lips after I had held the cartridge and... well... you know the rest :D

I doubt they're waterproof, meaning that water will likely seep into the cartridge if it gets dunked, but modern electronics are very resilient, so it will probably be fine once it dries out. The important thing is not to run power through the cartridge while it's still wet because it could create a short circuit that has the potential to damage the cartridge and even the console itself.

They definitely are not. The open pins make them non waterproof. But the top label is water resistant. (To an extent)

No, well they technicaly are unless you put the under water for a few days My cartridge just surived a washing mashine

So if u drop it on the pool but get it out before 10 or 30 minutes then it might still be alive

It's an SD card with a custom shell. To my knowledge, I don't think the Switch cards are rated for any kind of water protection.

I'm sure if you get it wet it will be fine after you give it adequate time to dry.

I once put a GPU through an ultrasonic cleaner (completely submerged in water). Long story short: Salt lamp on top of my PC + lots of rain and humid weather = dead GPU. After a few days of drying it worked again just fine. The salt dripped onto the back of the card and must have shorted something out. The ultrasonic cleaner dissolved the salt and removed it from the card.

Water can only damage electronics in a few ways.

  1. You turn on your wet electronics and the minerals in the water create a short between components which can result in too much current flowing where it's not supposed to. This could lead to permanent damage, or just weird behavior depending on what gets shorted.
  2. You let water sit on or in your electronics for too long without drying and the metals will begin to corrode. This would probably take a while (days, maybe?). The contacts on the Switch cards are gold-plated so they shouldn't corrode, but the solder and the flash chips inside could be damaged over time.

For a Nintendo Switch cartridge: If I dropped one in water I would see if there is a way to take the shell off and dry everything off completely - let is sit in a dry area with some airflow for a day or so.
