I'm just wondering what type of games people consider as art.

Personally, I consider ICO as a masterpiece.

I haven't play Shadow of Collusus so I wouldn't know about it.

Feel free to say why you think the game is art too:)

I'd say why I think ICO is art but I'd have to prepare a speech just to show my love for the game:P

All games are art, just as all paintings are. It's just a matter of whether it's good art or not.

Cryostasis due to its immensely satisfying and complex story. No game has done this better.

It is highly debatable whether all paintings are art.

Defining artin general is highly debatable. I doubt many people are going to agree with each other in this thread, except for people who just throw in a Team ICO game because they can't think of anything else.

No. in fact no games are art. And that's indeed a fact. In Germany you have to censor swastikas and other symbols in video games while they don't have to be censored in movies. That's because movies are considered art and games aren't.

I'm not sure Marcel Duchamp or Andy Warhol would agree with you; I certainly do not. All video games are art to some degree. Art is simply an expression of human creativity. They may say something, they may say nothing, but video games are all creative works given form.

The definition of art is hardly governed by Germany's or any other country's government. Also, Braid and GTA IV are the only games I would consider had enough artistic value to be considered art.

Art, by definition, is supposed to affect my senses, emotions, and intellect. Wanna bet money that some, if not most people are affected in that way by looking at a beautiful piece of artst yle in a game?

It's not a fact, there's a whole debate going on about that in the artist's community. A artist creates a piece a art that is subjective to the viewer at hand, just like the artst yle of a game is subjective to the player, and a lot of artistic touch goes on in the artst yle of a game. So yeah, games are a artform aswell a etertainment medium, by common sense, i don't care how other people define 'art'. It's still going to be subjective, and it's one disscusion that is never going to be set in stone.

of course games are art. The combination of it's music, gameplay, story, graphics etc. can make something really beautiful.

Whether games are art or not is entirely down to the individual. They are not widely accepted as art sure, but imo should be! I see games as art and have no shame in admitting it!

On topic: Bioshock and Okami are prime examples of why I view games as an artform. There are many many more also.

okami is an obvious one.. ehres one from deep left field

the elder scrolls 2: daggerfall

here we have a game nobody probably saw coming its still the largest rpg ever made which is a testament to bethseda's careful and steady hands its nearing 15 years old and its still beating every other game in its size n scale and the nearest rpg is MILES away prior to cata you could fit TWO azeroths in daggerfall's map and still have a little slice elftover.

the npc's and enemy's all look great for its time (1999) and combat though tedious feels right. the game imo neevr gets boring and the ability to toss the story out of the highest tower you can find is a really nice touch.. neevr mind levitation and lycanthropy!

for its time this was the ultimate sandbox to mess around in.. id make characters n experiment for the heck of it..

for example i once made a toon got it bitten by a werewolf turning me into one myslef id then kill all the royalty i could get my hands on and since 9due to a game bug) lycan's cant die you could kill whole towns indescriminently.

i had like 12 houses, 3 boats 12 horses and enough knick knacks and trinkets to fill a thousand more.

but this art is unfinished.. if you own the game in hardcopy oyou can find all the stuff half assembled that bethseda didnt finish.. id love to see someone finish what they statered with a game mod or bethseda outright take the time necissary.. like taks 2 dudes to it and jsut GD finish it.. it would be the most complete rpg ever made and the STANDARD we probably would judge rpg's by.

the ground work is all there.. jsut GD finish it. itd be like what if the mona lisa of venus de milo were left half finished. (from their current state)

The visuals of the Halo series were fanastic art IMO. When you could freeze frame action in your Halo 2 battles you coulf find some stunnig images.

Braid and Limbo spring to mind as artistic type games. However as others mention it can be hard to define as each individual will see art as different things.

a lot of people will point at the visuals of a game or the music and use that as an example of art. for me, its always how these things come together with gameplay that demonstrates how video games are in medium in which artists can create art. the ico and yorda characters in "Ico" are just bits of code stored on a disk, but are also very human. i KNOW how ico feels toward yorda through expressive animations, lighting in the environments, subtle gameplay systems, music, and natural reactions to situations. to me, its something that is very beautiful that i value much more than a game of checkers.

Okami, in the graphics department. In the story and atmosphere department, I'd say Majora's Mask. In the gameplay department, I'd say Scribblenauts.

Games that feel very immersive and atmospheric feel more like art. "Calm and chill" games that feel relaxing and beautiful. Such games are Syberia (especially), Final Fantasy 9, Okami, N64 Zeldas etc...

imho...all the big "art" games(ico, soc, the new ico team game) they all seem really boring and dull to me...i really couldnt get into them...i can see why people can consider them art and reading about the games makes them sound awesome...but they dont translate well for me...but...i think all games are a form of media/art...just as much as movies could be consider media/art or music...

If we're going to use the gimped, confined view that politicians hold of gaming as a standard, we're a long way from home indeed.

The closest is The Path, Braid, The Void and some random flash 'games'. The rest are more in tune with 'products of design' and in turn disqualifies it as art.

Wow I didn't think that this thread would get this popular:D

Most of the extra things I would have put in have already been said by a couple of people so there's no need to repeat anything.

I think the Disgaea series is art as well as some of the Final Fantasy games:)

Games like rpg and mmorpg are for sure can be considered as art! Especially Mass Effect, Kotor and other famous series!
