So it's out. I went to Fry's today, went straight to where the big crowd was and picked it up. My long nightmare of waiting to play Guitar Hero II comes to an end today (well, tonight since I'm at work now). On the way home, I got to thinking about how awesome it is that Guitar Hero now has an online leaderboard (too bad no true online - bah!) and how that might tie into our little group here in General Games. I know of at least a half dozen people that are buying the game today, and based on the crowd I saw at Fry's, there are going to be plenty more than that. I saw Vader's thread on Metal Gear Online, and I thought it would be a good idea to have a few community-based threads around certain games.

A few interesting tidbits about the game that I didn't know:

You can play co-op with one person using the guitar and the other using a controller. Not sure how I feel about this yet. It could be too easy. Or lame. Or both. Still, at least you can get some of the co-op achievements without having to dish out for another guitar.

The expansion jack on the bottom of the guitar is for an effects pedal. Yay!

The guitar has a cord (boo! lame! hiss!), but has the same breakaway cord you'll remember from the original Xbox controller. Kinda makes you wonder if the game wasn't in production for the Xbox first, y'know?

Achievements! Sweet holy gracious achievements designed to drive the ordinary man mad. I'm ashamed to admit this, but even if I had this already for the PS2, I'd re-buy it for the downloadable content and the achievements.

So here's the deal:

Add your Xbox Live tag if you want to have your scores (which will be verified!) listed in the General Games leaderboard, and then get to shredding fools! Scores will be updated nightly or as often as need be.

And I'll tell you right now: None of you are going to take me down in "Message In A Bottle." None of you.

I ordered the game from Circuit City yesterday, and I'll probably be getting the game in the mail by Friday. It'll be this and MGS3 this week for me:P I plan on spending quite sometime on GHII so I'm down for this

Oh yes, count me in on this!  The tag is Super Dave, of course.

Now I need to head down to the store and get my copy.  I already had the PS2 version, but with achievements, leaderboards, and downloads, all of my future Guitar Hero rocking will be done on my 360.

I don't have my retail copy yet, but I preordered it, so it should be along shortly. Put me down as Edward Appleby. Are we listing leaderboards for specific songs? Or career scores? If we do specific songs, it's going to be a LOOOOOOOONG list.

Right on, man.

I was planning on doing the whole shebang (what's that 70 some-odd songs?) with the top ten listed. Mainly because some people are going to have their favorites that they do better at than others. But yeah, it'll be a long list. I better reserve a couple posts here in the thread before it gets any bigger.

Official Leaderboard

A few notes: The letter next to the name denotes the difficulty the score was obtained on. For example, an "H" next to the score means Hard, and X is for Expert, and so on.

4-10-07 Update: Colored font, larger font on song titles, top 5 now top ten, new players added, career leaderboard added.

4-25-07 Update: Placed career leaderboard at the top, added italics and bold to career leaderboard top three, grouped tiers 1 and 2 with career leaderboard, grouped tiers 3-5 together, grouped tiers 6-8 together, new players added

4-27-07 Update: Moved the downloadable songs to the post below the bonus songs listing. Now it's got its own section to populate. Whee.

74 by default. And yeah, let's not forget the downloadable songs. Those'll start to cut into some space as well.AlexN

Crikey! Forgot all about those.

That's gonna put the number above a hundred. Dang, this is gonna be carpal tunnel-inducing. Totally worth it, though.

Man, if I had a 360 I would be all over this. I just picked up the PS2 version of Guitar Hero 2 the other day and I'm lovin' it! I've enjoyed playing pretty much every song on the list - with the exception being that terrible song called "girlfriend". Seriously, whoever put that in the track listing needs to be shot.

One of the things that has surprised me about the game is just how hard it is. I've finished every track on normal difficulty and I figured "Hey, I'm goin' straight to Expert!" Bad, bad idea. Some of those songs are crazy hard! Free Bird is borderline impossbile. I'd be shocked if anyone has 5 Starred that on Expert.

So far, my favorite track is "Heart Shaped Box" by Nirvana which I was able to 5 Star on normal difficulty. It kinda feels like the song was made for Guitar Hero. Which is cool. :)

What's your Gametag, man? I seem to remember it being the same as your Gamespot name, but I wasn't 100% on it.

There should be one for Killing in the name of - since that's the song you can get the highest score on (in my experience). I don't want to brag (read: I really really do), but I got about 4,5 million points in the PS2 version on Killing in the name of (on Expert)...

yeah I'm pretty awesome

[QUOTE="Shoun"]I picked up my copy today, put me down for some serious rock.Shame-usBlackley

What's your Gametag, man? I seem to remember it being the same as your Gamespot name, but I wasn't 100% on it.

it's in his sig :P

i'm a total noob to the guitar hero franchise, but i picked it up for my 360 today anyway....so i'd rather not have my name listed in the scores, but i'll check here anyways to see how i stack up against the rest of you guys....

I ordered it from Amazon so I should be getting it Thursday or Friday. I'm a bit rusty since I haven't played since my Expert mode marathon on Guitar Hero I during the summer time. I'm super excited to play the second one. I remember going to Best Buy to try it out on the PS2 awhile ago but they disabled access to the options somehow preventing me from switching to lefty. Always bringing down the left handed guitarists.

I will be in on this as song as I get my copy for the 360, I destroyed the PS2 version and look forward to the competition. My 10 years experience playing real guitar (and actually being able to play some of these songs on real guitar) gives me a nice advantage me thinks  Some of my favorite songs from the game are Carry On My Wayward Son, John The Fisherman and Freebird, so awesome. Looking forward to seeing how they translated The Trooper.

Ah, man. I wish I had a 360 for this game. I'll likely need to wait for the Wii version. My friend can play Jordan on Expert with his back to the screen and get 88% of all the notes. It's ridiculous and incredibly cool and nerdy at the same time. Imagine the dedication... As for learning to play it, it's all finger positioning. Just practice each tiny loop over and over again. That first minute and 30 or so seconds is pretty easy, just three real combos.Three real positions. From then on, it's finger speed. Doing those three notes then ripping your fingers back in form to hit the next three is a tad disorienting and takes practice. In order to even try and keep up with my buddy, I spent about an hour just playing to this spot and restarting once I finished those three-sets. Since you're never really playing two notes at once, it's annoying to pull off. It's basically all the same deal from then on. Finger speed and memorizing. Again, you're really never playing two notes at once, so get your hand speed and your combos together. Just all those bits and pieces, so that when you finally start getting it down, you can try and recall what you need to do. There's no real trick to it. Finger/hand speed and positioning. Break down those lines into single notes and repeat, repeat repeat. Here's a good video I found on youtube of a guy playing it, showing a guitar and how he does it(using the select key as a killswitch, but hey, if he's right and Buckethead uses one in real life instead of strumming in some songs, then hey...don't knock it). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOgsTEmGvEU

Put me down as danmp18.  This will be the first version of the game that I'll own, but I will get better at it.  I should have the game by the end of the weekend.

Great idea Shame-us.  Let's shred!!

Okay, I'm going to be putting up the first numbers tonight.

After studying the leaderboards a bit, I've found that it doesn't differentiate which difficulty you're playing on. In other words, you could have been struggling through Freebird on Hard and getting your butt kicked by someone on Medium who is more competent at the song. However, due to the increased notes, chords and speed of the bar, the higher difficulties have the potential for waaaaaay higher scores than those below them. But then again, this is a game where you're never really going to get better until you push yourself out of your comfort zone, and it isn't like a good score gets erased when you go to the next level - it stays until you beat it regardless of the difficulty.

The lack of having to put up all the different difficulties will make this much easier to tack down daily.

EDIT: Also, be SURE to spell your gamertag EXACTLY as it appears on Live. It's going to be hard enough to track all of you down on there as it is.

Oh yeah - my ******* hand HURTS. Like, bad. Like, hold it to your chest and talk to it gently bad. Like, Luke in Empire bad. Like, arthritic old bastard bad. And STILL I say it's worth it. Totally dig the new songs. I never realized how bad I missed Tom Morello's hammering riffs until I played "Killing In The Name." "War Pigs" is frigging brilliant, and I totally went crosseyed towards the end of "Freebird." I also like the Rancid tune. "Carry On Wayward Son" doesn't hold up as well as Boston's "More Than A Feeling" did, but it does the job. The Foo Fighters' "Monkey Wrench" kicks ass as well.

I totally hope Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell" makes the download list. I'm not a huge Pantera fan to begin with, but there's something about playing that song that just fits hand in glove with Guitar Hero. "You see us coming and you all together run for COVER!"

The only issue I've had so far is the mic inlet on the guitar is too loose, which means I have to hold it to be able to hear messages or chat. I'm probably going to exchange it once Fry's gets more copies in.

~-~LOL!:P Yea, my hand went through two stages of pain. One when I first started and the other when I went to hard. But it was oh so worth it.:D Of course, I use my index finger to play two notes instead of keeping my hand how I did with normal. I figured out an easy way to get used to that if anyone wants to know. And um... I know this is kind of off topic but I don't really want to start a new thread but... Is it... like... *ahem*... "illegal* to hack new songs into the game?>.> And if not could I do it with the 360 so I don't need to get a modded PS2? Cuz if I could then I would totally get this for the 360 and join in on this little thing. (I'd use a different profile for hacked songs.) I just really want some things like Co Ca and stuff.:(~-~

Pretty sure you're better sticking to Freetar and all the other PC clones for that.

Considering(well, supposedly) the maker of Freetar was hired by Activision, and was asked to change the name from Freetar Hero to Freetar, and halt all personal progress on the clone, I don't think even Activision believes it illegal. They just don't want their employees fiddling in it. Personally, I'd love to see a lot of downloadable content on XBL, but until then, people will be stuck with Freetar's editor to add their own songs to a GH style game. I'll be waiting for GH2 on the Wii though. Hopefully downloadable content for that too. I'd rather play GH in front of a TV than waste time trying to get some flash emulator knockoff working on my PC. I think that's nearly what everyone would prefer. Though hacking a game and adding songs would screw up the balance and potentially the online. I've heard of something being done to add 'Crazy Train', but only rumours.

Is Guitar Hero just a jazzed up version of PaRappa the Rapper?  I'm not trying to be an ass, but I'm not a big rock fan, so this game doesn't appeal to me with its music.  What I'm trying to ask is, why should a non-rock fan buy this game?  What does it deliver gameplay wise that PaRappa didn't?

If we can, we should add top 10 lists for career scores as well. I don't know if we should do both campaign only and non-campaign only, but one form or another of career score ought to factor in.

Shame-us, I don't know how you're going to get all of the info from the game to this thread!  The leaderboards are kind of a fluid thing, so maybe we should have a deadline so that we know when we have to finish the song to be on the leaderboards?  That would mean less updating for you.

Another thing to consider is to take photos of all the leaderboards, so you wouldn't have to type all of those numbers in.  Just put everyone here on your friends list, and voila.  You might be able to accomplish this by creating a new XBL Silver membership and using that gamertag only to add friends that are here in this thread (including Mr Blackley).  Then it would be just a matter of taking and uploading a bunch of digital photos.

Hey Blackley, didn't see you become a mod there. Anyways, I'm on your friends list, so that's not a problem. I beat all the campaign songs on expert, and now i just need to do the bonus songs. Alright, so good hunting. :)

Yep. Since the leaderboard isn't public and can't be accessed through Xbox.com, it would literally take forever to get the scores pulled.

So here's the dealio. You guys are going to get a Friend Request from Mr Blackley. You don't have to keep me on there or anything, just boot me off once you see your scores posted and I'll send them out again as needed for updates. The Friends List option is going to make this much, much easier to do.

So here's the interested parties so far whose tags I HAVE:

Super Dave (Archie)

Edward Appleby (Alex)

Caddy0688 (Same)

Danmp18 (Same)

CrankyOld Gamer (Same)

Shoun2507 (Shoun)

Purassic Jark (Korubi)

Archangel (Same)

plastique (axilia)

Covenant342 (Same)

EazyB (Same)

I'm shooting out the friends requests now, and I'll update fast once I've gotten them. This will also allow you to check my scores so you know I'm not pulling any crap (not that I would, well....maybe). :P

If you want in, and you DO NOT see your name above, I need your tag. Good shreddin' fellas. I'm putting up the people that I have on my list right now. Can't wait to see what happens.
