Super Mario RPG: OFFICIALLY Best game of all time?

"Best Game of All Time" lists (especially the consumer-made ones) consistently feature Super Mario RPG. It hardly ever tops the list, but seriously, is there any game that does top these lists frequently? There are so many different tastes in gaming that to make a game that consistently tops "Best Game of All Time" lists would be nothing short of a miracle. I don't think it can be done.

However, SMRPG is consistently featured in these lists, which is a MAJOR accomplishment. I think that the consensus that SMRPG is one of the best games of all time should be justification enough to make it officially the best game of all time, since the debate of what game is absolutely the best of all time is bound to invoke civil war. I think SMRPG is the one game that almost everyone can agree on is deserving of this honor.

Yeah I agree. All of the polls or best game lists are based on somebody's opinion. So to me is kinda hard to trust any of the lists or polls saying this game or that game is the best. To answer the question, while really liked SMRPG it just doesn't compare to OoT. Both games are classics, but if you nailed me down and made me pick, It'd be OoT.

Nope. There a lot of other games that are consistently in top 10's, but that doesn't make them the best either.

you cant have a game be the OFFICIAL best game....... It's just not possible. Even saying Super mario rpg is considered by many to be the best game of all time would be FALSE. I think more people would agree that Mario3 is better. even the original Super Mario Bros. is better than Super Mario RPG. And since games come in so many different types and its an opinion ,you cant even say that 1 game is THE best. sorry, dont see where you get SMRPG is so great...........

oh and FYI the game has a Critic Score of 8.8 (out of 10 reviews) and a User score of 9.4 (out of thousands of users) here on Gamespot. That doesnt sound like THE BEST EVER.....

You can't realy say officially the best for any game. Though I wil agree SMRPG one awsome game, if too easy.

Eh, I liked OoT better, mainly because of the epic feeling. And I mean epic as in Sword & the Stone or Odyssey or Gilgamesh.

mario rpg would be near the bottom of my top 100 best games... if it made that.

it was good, but not great. paper mario: thousand year door was much better. castlevania SotN = better. there are many others.

the original tetris though, is widely reguarded as the best game ever. everyone's played it and has probably owns it or owned it. it's worldwide baby.

yeah Tetris is the best puzzle game by FAR. It got Gameboy to sell, thats for sure. My top 100 wouldnt include any rpg games probably. but thats just my personal taste in games.

Super Mario RPG however is a great game that IS one of the best games of all time, however for RPG's I like Chrono Trigger the best.

There is no such thing as a ONE Best Game of All Time. Everybody's opinion is different. There will never be a universal consensus on anything so "the best" can only be applied on an individual level.

My personal favourite is Goldeneye 007.

Well then I suppose we would have to talk about a Top 10 (for example) Best Games concensus (but even then, it couldn't apply to the entire gaming community). But the thread is about THE ONE Best Game of all Time, which of course will be different for everybody.

If for whatever reason you would come to believe that BMX XXX is indeed the best game ever made, what would have anybody say about it? Even if you were the only person on the planet to think that way, your opinion (if sincere) would still be valid.

Again, there's no general concensus on what the worst game is. I searched "worst games" on Google and none of the sites I clicked had the same listing, let alone Superman 64 in their first position. For some, the worst game is ET, for another it was a game called Irritating Stick (?) and I also saw Big Rigs in another listing.

That just goes to say that while some games seem to pop up more than other in people's top, the entire gaming community will never agree on THE best game or THE worst game.

i think i agree with you. which makes this thread pointless (to people with this same opinion). still, 'the best...' is an impossible question...and i do wonder why it is so popular. possibly the only way you could make it work is if a large number of people were 'representitive' of the gaming community at large; so for example, 30% wins it. i think this is how magazines decide it, by people voting in. but it's never conclusive and you have to wonder about the criteria for judging 'best'. because i assume there are no guidelines and people simply vote and that's it. you could say it was all opinion, but i think there is more to it than that. games can be objectively well-designed, and other games not so well-designed but somehow very fun. then you get to the question, 'what is design?' and 'what is a game?'. and i doubt many people who vote in to those magazines go through such a rigorous process. then you have nostalgia and things perhaps become even more fuzzy.

Whoever doesnt agree with OP deff never played the game,or if you did,never took time to see EVERY god damn awesome hidden things included in the game.  THIS game,has enough content to keep you glued to your screen (if youre gonna play it in a old school way without spoiling everything with internet) for a year or more. Im sorry,but theres almost NO games out there with as much content,secrets,characters , such a vast and refreshing world and universe. SMRPG just does everything perfect a games shouldve went in that **** direction instead of going the bland,linear,short,w/o replayability way they're going nowadays. I miss the old gen of gaming where GAMES WERE ACTUALLY **** GAMES.

No, because that changes from person to person. For example, while many say that Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy VII are the greatest games ever (both of them wrong), I go with Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu.Video_Game_King

Super Mario RPG is a fantastic game, one of my favorite SNES titles, but it is far from "greatest game of all time". It's a Final Fantasy-inspired RPG, for obvious reasons (plus there's Culex), and never really contributed to gaming as a whole.

I say a game the qualifies for greatest game of all time is one that had immeasurable impact on the industry while also being an amazing game in its own right, and that's why you see games like Space Invaders, DOOM, OoT, and FFVII on the more trustworthy lists. Whether or not you enjoyed them, they are all solid games that left a lasting impact.

To me, that's Super Mario 64. People have attempted to tell me it wasn't as revolutionary as many consider it, but that doesn't change the fact that many game developers consider it among the most important games forming the foundation of exploratory 3D gaming. It's just my opinion, though.

Best Game of All Time is such a silly thing to debate.  Quality is completely subjective.

I just beat this game, and while it was a hell of a good time, the idea that it's the greatest game of all time is truly lolworthy to me. It is a very polished retro RPG that does almost everything right from a design perspective (and it has a damn good battle system), but the story is thin as tissue paper. I wasn't expecting a Final Fantasy-like epic tale, but I felt like Square/Nintendo didn't even try to come up with an interesting premise for the story.

Honestly, even if we just look at RPGs of the same era, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and Phantasy Star IV are very much superior to this game. Secret of Mana is better too.

Mario RPG is not even a good game. You change the name to something else and everybody would ignore it. All the fuss is because it says "Mario" on the tittle.
