Which did you guys prefer?

I actually was able to own both, my Father buying me the Playstation due to it being the new "hot" thing.

My mother buying me the N64, due to here liking Mario and other flagship titles.

I enjoyed the N64 more personally it had all the game I enjoyed.

Golden eye

Smash bros

Mario Kart

Banjo

DK64

StarFox

Kirby

Ocarina of time

PS1, although i never had a preference, really. My dad chose to buy consoles for me, i never really asked for them. But i DEFINITELY appreciated it. My dad is awesome. Lots of father/son co-op gaming like Double Dragon, Final Fight, etc. Great times. He finally stopped buying me consoles after the ps2 and xbox, which is actually when he decided HE was too old to play them.

Yes, as a single child i was hella spoiled. But he didn't buy consoles at launch, or even near launch. He waited til over a year ormore after launch, when the prices dropped (and when used ones were available). The only console i bought for myself was a used N64, which i got about 6 yrs ago. Only wanted it for 3 games - Perfect Dark, Wrestlemania 2000, and Conker's Bad Fur Day. Bought my wife a Wii, so technically it wasn't for myself. I purchased a PS3 but that was with gift money, and that was just 2 months ago (the tradition of not buying consoles anywhere near launch continues!).

No console has topped these two, yet. PS1, N64, and the SNES are the three best gaming machines ever created.

Personally I prefer the N64 because I bought it before the Playstation. Pilotwings, Mario 64, Wave Race, Blast Corps, Goldeneye, Smash Bros, and Ocarina of Time are games that have yet to be surpassed.

I can't discredit the Playstation though. I ended up buying one, and have very fond memories of Twisted Metal 1&2, Gran Turismo, and Metal Gear Solid. All the sports games were also better on the Playstation. It really was worth owning the both of them.

I just bought an N64 a couple years ago. During the time they were both out, I had PS1 and Dreamcast. Dreamcast was more impressive than N64 and PS1 both. But PS1 had more quality games than both N64 and Dreamcast. So many first time experiences of the 3D age of gaming happened for me on PS1, so it just holds a special place in my heart. Games like Diablo, Doom, Hexen, Resident Evil 1-3, GTA, Twisted Metal, Syphon Filter, Tenchu, King's Field 1 & 2, and while I may not be a big Final Fantasy fan, FFVII had the most impressive (BY FAR!) cutscenes I had ever seen in a game up until that point. Mario and Zelda games are the best, don't get me wrong. They made me fall in love with gaming. But they alone cannot beat out the PS1, IMO. But N64 gets brownie points for the early multiplayer goodness that was 007 Goldeneye.

PS1=RPG's therefore PS1=Best.

However, N64 was also awesome.

I owned an N64 and played that most. However looking back, I would certainly say the PS1 was better overall.

My parents would only let me have one console, and I picked the PlayStation. It was a great system though. With series like Spyro, Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve, and Jet Moto.

Eventually I shall pick up an N64.

Definitely the N64. I liked the original metal gear, but no where near the other ones, even the remake was miles better, but other then that I never felt that PS1 was that great. N64 however had many many great games. Banjo, DK64, Perfect Dark, 007 (including the golden eye sequel which was a forgotten, yet great game) Turok (idk if it was multiplat) Smash Bros, Rogue Squadron, Battle for Naboo, Zelda oot, and Majoras Mask. I think maybe an argument for PS1 is that it had a deeper library, but too me the top 15 or so games aren't even close. The only thing N64 is lacking is RPGs.

Both consoles were great and had great games, but I go with PS1 for the sheer volume of games released.

If you want adventure games and platformers go with the N64. If you want RPGs and games with depth then go with the Ps1.

The games don't hold up nearly as well as PS1 or SNES games, or games from most other systems for that matter.

Disagree. The classics on the N64 have the windwaker factor. Mario 64, Wave Race, and Blast Corps remain as some of my favorite looking games, to this day.

Question to all you guys saying the ps1 had all the games. I understand that but did you really play RPGs in the 64bit era? I know I didn't, except Zelda is that even counts as an RPG.

No, I didn't play RPGs in the PS1 era, but the PS1 had tons of RPGS. FFVII, Xenogears, Chrono Cross(?) to name a few.Fact of the matter is PS1 had more great games and more games for all tastes.

Yeah, of course I played RPGs then. Why wouldn't I? Some of the best RPGs of all-time are from that era: Final Fantasy VII, VIII, & IX; Breath of Fire III, Chrono Cross, Legend of Legaia, Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Parasite Eve 1 & 2, King's Field 1 & 2, Diablo, Baldur's Gate (The original, son, before Dark Alliance), and a ton more I know I'm forgetting (but I'm sure there's enough RPGs fanatics on these boards to name some more).

PS1 was the one I spent more time playing, and while the N64 had good multiplatform ports like Forsaken, Spider-Man, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Vigilante 8 - exclusives like Twisted Metal 2 were my games of choice.

I have never, ever played a N64, and the only game personally that the system interests me for is Goldeneye. But hopefully that will pop up on Xbox Live Arcade sometime... oh, yeah and a few Wrestling titles... there's a few that I want to play... including WWF No Mercy.

But I grew up with the PS1 mainly. There were so many great games!

  • Resident Evil
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
  • Resident Evil Survivor
  • Tomb Raider
  • Tomb Raider II
  • Tomb Raider III
  • Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation
  • Tomb Raider Chronicles
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Metal Gear Solid VR Missions
  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysey
  • Crash Bandicoot
  • Crash Bandicoot 2
  • Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped
  • WWF War Zone
  • WWF Attitude
  • WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game
  • WWF In Your House
  • WWF SmackDown!
  • WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role
  • WCW Thunder
  • WCW Mayhem
  • WCW Vs. The World
  • WCW Backstage Assault
  • ECW Hardcore Revolution
  • ECW Anarchy Rulz
  • Driver
  • Driver 2
  • Syphon Filter
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Grand Theft Auto: London 1969
  • Grand Theft Auto 2

I could go on... :D.

Exclusives like Twisted Metal were the reason I chose PS1 over a Sega Saturn, even though I could've gotten 3 free games with it. If I didn't say it before, I did own both systems, I just spent a lot more time and had a lot more variety of games on PS1.

PS1 had more games, many of which were really good (including my favourite 4 FF games, 7-9 plus the port of 6), but the few classics I remember on N64 still represent the best time in gaming for me. Weird to think today, but Mario Kart 64 seemed absolutely mind blowing to me at the time. :-P

N64 wins for me, as it had (all imo) the best Mario game ever and the best Mario Kart game ever and Lylat Wars, as well as a few other gems such as Blast Corps, ISS64, Goldeneye (though I hated the single player, multiplayer was ace). Local multiplayer hasn't been the same since the N64 days.

I feel like the PS1 had games in genres which are more popular today. PS1 was experimenting with ideas which would evolve into the more refined experiences we have today. A lot more variety came from that system.

Having said that, one could say the PS1 has aged poorly due to the years of improvement on the formulas the ps1 presented. In contrast, the genres most popular on the n64 have not aged as much in current-gen times. I'm talking specifically about platform games, zelda-like games, beat-em ups, kart racers, and party games.

I think ps1 was the better system, but the n64 has not aged as poorly.
