An Addictive Strategy Game for Strategy Gamers

User Rating: 9 | Victoria II PC
I wasn't really sure what to expect, having never played Victoria I; but, this game has really been fun. I find that when I start playing it, I tend to lose track of time, much like the Civilization series. :) I haven't really tried playing a Superpower (that's next for me), but it has been a real challenge playing as 3rd world countries (or even "uncivilized" countries) and attempting to build up their status in the world.

On gameplay, the premise is that you are leading a country of your choice (as it existed at the time) from the 1830's onward. You virtually control all decisions in running your country: Production, Political decisions, Trade, Military, Budget, and so on. You invest in Research & Development, choosing specific items from a number of available categories: Culture, Army, Navy, Industry, Commerce, etc. Through these decisions you guide your country forward to it's glory or doom. :)

Sounds complicated and dry? It's surely not, and the game does a good job at laying it all out in an understandable manner. Research milestones have a distinct, noticeable impact on your game and help in moving you toward your chosen goals. It never seems like you have enough money, research points, or resources and that keeps you engaged and driving forward! And attacking neighbors and gaining territory must be done very thoughtfully and tactically, but it is SO satisfying when you succeed! :)

I will say, Victoria II has a bit of a steep learning curve and frankly, I am still trying to figure some of the finer points out. I would highly recommend trying the Demo and then, playing through the tutorials to get a good grasp of the game. Definitely try the Demo (although you can only play as America there) ... I think you'd be very impressed with the game, if you are a Strategy Game lover and ready for a challenge.
