Tony Hawk has really come a long way. He's boarded his way to the top in every instalment of the series, ollied over all mediocre competition and boardslided his way into the gallery of gaming greatness. Setting sparks off in the building. So, I've decided to review this game. Admittedly, it's May 12th 2005. But back in the day, my hands and my mates' hands were locked in competition aboard the second game. Simply, because it was brilliant. At the time, the graphics were good; the animation was decent, the framerate never faltered, the models were detailed. Now they could pass as blocky because this is modern-day, but at the time they were cutting-edge stuff. The soundtrack was understandable, it fitted in with the theme of the actual game, the whole atmosphere of the boarding scene. Some songs were ACTUALLY DECENT and reeked catchiness, but otherwise there was not much sound in this game. No cutscenes, no voiceovers, and the samey sound of boards flipping, grinding rails, ollieing. And the sound of being impaled in treacherously placed spike pits. Unfortunately, that gruesome shot of Tony Hawk lying limply with a spike protuding from his back was never shown, just a white flash of light and BINGO he's alive and kicking, ready to make sparks fly. The gameplay was addictive, and that is all that can be said. Nothing particularly innovative or anything, just hardcore rack-up-points boarding action. It wasn't particularly realistic either, but if Neversoft had actually gone the extra mile for realism it would completely miss the point. There are some impossible tricks that you can get by bashing multiple buttons in quick succession, and with stats full skaters can turbocharge up a quarterpipe and reach demented heights before speeding back down to ground level. There are a lot of tricks in this game, most of them real-life, some made-up. Manuals can be performed by pressing up-down or down-up, triangle is grind, square is flip, cross is jump and circle is grab, but there are a truckload of fancy grinds, manual tricks, flips and grabs to perform and even buy. Pro Skater 2 is a truly fun experience, an exhilirating skateboarding global ride and a mapmaker to mould your very own skatepark and keep you playing. If you still own a PSone and don't have this game, scavenge some local games store to see if you can find it. For about a fiver.
