Ocarina of Time IS the best game ever. Zelda became fairly popular mostly through its successes on the SNES but it had been around earlier than that. OOT on the N64, however, turned Zelda into probably the best game series ever. Forget your GTAs, your Halos, your half lifes, whatever. If you havent played this game, get your hands on a 64 and buy it off ebay. You need to play Ocarina of Time. Even in the year 2004. That being said Ocarina of Times has some the best gameplay ever. It has an excellent mixing of puzzle solving, exploring, action, and if you need a break, you can work on the dozens of little sidequests that have come to define the zelda name. OOT story is good, but the way you progress through the story is what makes it great. As far as graphics, they may not appear that great in comparison to other 64 games, but the implementation of the 3D environments is with out a doubt one of the best to date (1997). The sound effects in thisi game are good, but the music is what makes the sound superb. And if you want to talk replay value, this game is just so good you cant play it once. I've beaten it seven times. Its that good. To make a long story short, OOT is the best game ever, and if you havent played it, make sure you do.
