A Star Fox game for the fans.

Star Fox: Assault is a game I was NOT expecting to be good at all. Having played the demo eons ago, I wasn't so impressed with what they were working on, so I pushed it aside and decided to not make it part of my collection. Boy, was I wrong. Having visited Gamestop just recently and finding this in the used Gamecube section for $17, I figured, "What the hey. Lets give it a try." So I picked it up on a whim thinking it would be a good $17 quick purchase and then traded back in after the replay value died off. I ended up spending 10 straight hours playing this game with my friend. Beating the story mode in one sitting, we enjoyed the combination of the old-school Star Fox elements as well as the new 3rd-person style from the last game. A couple of the controls took a little getting used to, but once picked up, the game truly came to life. After beating it once, we decided to go through again and see if we could beat it faster at a higher difficulty. Sure enough, we did, and it was just as fun as the first run-through. Now it was time to test the multiplayer part of the game. At first, we thought this was a bit cheesy and not that in depth... until we realized we unlocked something just for playing the multiplayer a few rounds. We played more and unlocked more. And by unlocking more, the multiplayer got better and better and better, as you unlocked new game-settings, weapons, players, vehicles, and stages. Weapons like the rocket launcher really made the multiplayer fascinating, as shooting it left you vulnerable due to the fact that you only saw the missile on your screen... because you were directing and controlling it. We realized that the multiplayer was the reason for even owning this game. As fun as the single player was, the multiplayer was where the $17 paid off. Even though the controls were a little off, the story a bit short, and the dialog awful, Star Fox: Assault truly did deliver a punch I was not expecting out of the game at all. It has become the most requested multiplayer game during our game-day on Saturdays, and probably my favorite multiplayer in a long time.
