Sonic CD : Sega CD as Chrono Trigger : SNES

User Rating: 8.7 | Sonic the Hedgehog CD SCD
Ah, Sonic CD. Obviously the only Sega CD game which you shouldn't throw in the microwave for 10 minutes. Everything else on the Sega CD was in one of three categories:

1. Good, but not great. Worth playing at least once.
2. Mediocre, but playable if only for laughs.
3. Snap it in half and eat it.

Whereas Sonic CD falls into that special category of "very much excellent". Why? Well, it just seems like your average Sonic game on the surface, since the gameplay is basically the same: get to the goal in 10 minutes or less, collect rings, nail the enemies, beat the boss, etc. However, the new innovation of this game is the time travelling. You must travel to the past, destroy a machine somewhere in the level, and then warp back to the present to get a good future. If you're new to this game, it might take a while to master the art of time warping. Also, another flaw with the American version of the game is the soundtrack (with the exception of the past levels) has been totally redone, for the sake of taking advantage of CD-quality audio. This, butchering though it is, is only a minor flaw, though.

If you can snag a Sega CD add-on on eBay, or better yet, find an emulator, pick up Sonic CD. You can't call yourself a Sonic fan until you've played this game.
