Pros:
- The platforming gameplay remains as strong as ever, even on a new device.
- The time-travel mechanic is cool in how it changes up the level aesthetics in unique ways.
- Level design remains pretty solid.
- Boss fights are pretty memorable.
- I honestly didn't mind the slower gameplay, as I'm of the unpopular opinion that speed was, at times, a detriment to classic 2D "Sonic."
- The addition of animated cinematics was a very nice touch.
- Much as it can be a sore spot for some, I enjoyed the soundtrack.
- I kind of appreciated the short length, especially having played it right after "Sonic 3 & Knuckles."
Cons:
- I'm not sure it does enough to justify being its own new game. Having originally been conceived as a "Sonic 2" port for Sega CD, I don't see a lot that makes it feel like a unique game in the series.
- Even the time-travel mechanic is underutilized, as you can play through much of the game without it. At times, I hardly noticed it was there.
Consensus: "Sonic CD," on a smaller scale than the rest of the series, is a pretty good title. It may not be the most essential game in the franchise, but it's the kind of game I think could be worth replays thanks to its short length. I would recommend playing the numbered games before this one, but all in all, this is a solid title worth checking out if you need a 2D "Sonic" kick.
Final rating: 7 out of 10 "Good"
