Devil's Third Review

Ivan the Terrible.

Devil's Third opens boldly with your hero--a Russian Vin Diesel lookalike called Ivan who is permanently topless and covered in Japanese tattoos--playing a drum solo in his cell in Guantanamo Bay while a riot ensues throughout the rest of the camp. Why has he been locked up in Gitmo? "TERRORISM", says his on-screen bio.

Despite this, he's apparently good friends with some guy in charge of the facility who sets him free to quell the riot. He does this by murdering everyone in sight with his fists, or a pipe, while occasionally getting attacked by swarms of vampire bats.

Devil's Third is an action game that combines elements of melee combat--as per director Itagaki's previous work on the critically-acclaimed post-reboot Ninja Gaiden franchise--and cover-based shooting from both third- and first-person perspectives.

Unfortunately, while the freedom and precision of movement in 2004’s Ninja Gaiden was wondrous, Devil’s Third's melee combat feels unresponsive and clunky by comparison. There’s none of the careful consideration of your use of space and movement, no moveset to learn inside-out to ensure you cut everyone down with breathtaking efficiency. Instead, Devil’s Third invites you to just wade in and mash the attack buttons until everyone is dead, with action occasionally punctuated by a comically violent execution animation. The ability to dodge and block incoming attacks is available, but seldom used due to most of the enemies offering no tells of their next move.

No Caption Provided

As you might expect from a man who runs around waging war with no shirt on, Ivan can't absorb a huge amount of punishment. Often it only takes one or two enemies to get the drop on you and it's do svidaniya, comrade. This isn't an issue in and of itself, of course--the likes of Dark Souls or God Hand succeed, and indeed thrived, by using a more vulnerable protagonist--but unfortunately it doesn't work so well when enemies are capable of literally dropping in out of thin air.

At times, you are punished because the game does not understand its own rules. While Ivan can snap to nearby cover with some degree of reliability, enemies will often land shots at him even when you'd swear blind that they shouldn't be able to. Worse still, you'll occasionally see enemies shooting at you through their cover, never mind your own, and the controls occasionally become unresponsive as if you're dealing with some kind of simulation of online lag.

Because Devil's Third throws both gun-toting and melee enemies at you at the same time, so much hinges on a seamless transition between the two combat styles, theoretically creating interesting situations where the player is constantly forced to adapt. In reality, there is a slight but absolutely crucial delay when switching between your gun and melee weapon, leading to poor Ivan getting repeatedly shot or stabbed while he fumbles around with the various instruments of death magically stuck to his entirely nude back. Indeed, you'll frequently find yourself trying to gun down sword-wielding foes, or sprint at someone with a hammer while he fills you with bullets, purely because it often feels like the delay when switching weapons is more likely to get you killed than using the wrong style of combat.

"Control issues, combined with Ivan's frailty, often make combat a joyless and frustrating experience."

While Devil's Third may raise a smile with its self-aware sense of humour, the control issues--combined with Ivan's frailty--often make combat a joyless and frustrating experience.

The game also tries to alter the pace occasionally, including one section where you have to use Ivan's infra-red sunglasses to detect anti-personnel mines. This section, though brief, is tedious in the extreme as it simply involves creeping through a warehouse at a snail's pace while shooting the occasional mine. Worse still, the mines are reintroduced with no warning at all after a few battles, implying that the player is expected to keep the sunglasses activated and patiently crawl through the rest of the level, just in case.

Devil's Third does offer some welcome respite with its inventive multiplayer modes. As well as shooting at each other or hitting each other with hammers, players can also find themselves herding brightly-coloured chickens or collecting fruit and hurling it into a giant blender. And yet, because of the control issues shared with the main campaign, it's difficult to envisage players taking the game seriously in the long term, despite the multiplayer modes' initial charm.

Click on the thumbnails below to view in full-screen.

Worse still, as the multiplayer component of the game is being released for free on PC, the microtransactions and currency system of a free-to-play game are entirely present in the Wii U version. This allows players to buy their way to the more expensive weapons with real money if they so wish, which will surely infuriate players who are quite reasonably unwilling to do so.

Despite the occasional laughs and wonderfully weird multiplayer modes, Devil's Third is near-impossible to recommend. The numerous issues with the controls as well as crucial elements of the game's combat systems soon mount up to provide an experience that frustrates far more often than it entertains, resulting in a missed opportunity for what could've been a cult hit.

The Good

  • Occasionally funny, intentionally or otherwise
  • Comical and inventive multiplayer modes

The Bad

  • Clunky, frustrating action
  • Plenty of bugs--some funny, some infuriating
  • Free-to-play elements in a full-price game
  • Utterly laughable main character

About the Author

Sean Bell has plenty in common with the hero of Devil's Third--he's going bald, and only a 12 year-old could ever think he's cool.

"Free to play elements in a full price game."

This didn't stop MGS5: The Phantom Pain from getting a 10.

Wasn't expecting this game to get good reviews. I could tell just by looking at gameplay videos. Multiplayer might be pretty fun, but it's probably not worth the $60.

The multiplayer is straight up pay-to-win like a bad free-to-play game.

There's a difference between "microtransactions" and being similar to a free-to-play game. AAA games have had microtransactions for years. CoD, Madden, AC, Evolve, the Last of Us, Gears of War, Battlefield, Mass Effect, etc. Hell even Smash Bros has microtransactions.

But none of those games are objectively pay-to-win like Devil's third.

@dominoodle: GTA5 would be pay-to-win according to your definition. And it isn't the notion of pay-to-win, it's just microtransactions in general. Cosmetics are fine, I guess, but paying real money for anything in the game is just dumb.

There's a reason for it in free-to-play games, because they're free to play, and to keep it that way they need a way to make money, hence why they have microtransactions. When you pay $60 for the game, and some content is locked behind a paywall, that is just scummy.

I see pay-to-win as more of you essentially needing to spend money to be better at the game. If you can unlock all the weapons and whatever in Devil's Third within a reasonable amount of time, I wouldn't call that pay-to-win.

@savagerodent: Good point. And Konami totally botched their explanation by making everything more convoluted.

Mark my words, guys: 1 year or 2 from now, an "Underappreciated Gems" article will be published on this same site, and Devil's Third will be among them.

lol... been saying this from the moment i saw footage at e3 2014. this game was going to be all out garbage. the uninspired art design, the horrible character models, the atrocious frame rate. they tried to be stylish like a platinum game and failed miserably in every regard, especially when it comes to the gameplay. yet there were people here in the comments defending this game like it was the second coming lol (desperate wii u gamers who had nothing else to play on their console). itagaki created ninja gaiden with the aid of far more talented developers by his side. this just goes to prove that he got way more credit than he ever deserved as a game designer. he had free reign to do what he wanted here so nobody can find excuses for the mess that is the devil's third.

Right above the "The Good & The Bad" section:

Devil's Third/Wii U & Wii U & Wii U & Wii U & Wii U.

Weird and interesting.

I said it from the VERY START..... this game looked "TERRI-BAD".

I was right.... that is all.

Wait... that's not all.... Itagaki is a hack, who got lucky with Ninja Gaiden (Black). Likely the supreme awesomeness that is NGB was due to someone else on his team.

This is one of those games I geniunely want to try myself despite the poor reviews. Normally a swath of poor reviews gives me a clear idea of a game's shortcomings, but here I feel like I have to really feel the game for myself to really understand the true weight of the criticisms.

@moonmen: Never said anything about the quality of any game. I'm all for reviewers' having opinions on subjects, but I'm also for consistent criticism of elements of games. We dinged Dead Space 3 for free-to-pay. We dinged Assassin's Creed Unity for free-to-pay. We dinged Mortal Kombat X for free-to-pay. We dinged Devil's Third for free-to-pay. We look the other way on Metal Gear Solid V.

Maybe if I was Jim Sterling and followed up my point with the #F**Konami hashtag and a flashy YouTube video, people would agree 100% with what I said.

@itmustbepaul:
a) different reviewers
b) We dont know how bad the microtransactions are in DT, but it sounds pretty bad considering that the pc and wii u version are pretty much the same with microtransactions
c) Metal Gear can go through the game without microtransactions
d) In-game currency can be used to purchase things that can use microtransactions
e) Are you really comparing devils third to metal gear

@moonmen:

a) That's exactly what I first said. I'm all for reviewers having opinions.

b) We DO know what the Devil's Third microtransactions are, and it is a system that is no different than what was seen in Assassin's Creed Unity or Battlefield or any number of other games - you can earn the special currency by just playing the game, but you can also pay for the currency that unlocks weapons and costumes faster (Golden Eggs).

c) We DO (sort-of) know what Metal Gear's FOB mode is about, and it is a mode that is right on par with every other free-to-pay game - you can earn currency in the single player, and the microtransactions are an "accelerator" (Konami's word). Metal Gear has a single player game where you can ignore microtransactions. Devil's Third has a single player game where you can ignore microtransactions.

d) Same with Devil's Third, and Mortal Kombat X, and Assassin's Creed Unity, and Dead Space 3, and so many other games. Hell, in Mortal Kombat, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to buy fatalities except for the idea that you lack the dexterity to input buttons.

e) Yes, I'm making the comparison from a microtransaction standpoint. Again, I'm all for reviewers having opinions, and someone, somewhere, who is not named Itagaki, thinks Devil's Third is the 2015 Game of the Year. That's their opinion.

What I DO know is that I can't compare the quality of the two games (nor can you) since I have not played either game, nor will I let a "critic" tell me whether a game is good or not. What I want is consistency in judging elements of a game - if we hated microtransactions in Devil's Third or Dead Space or Mortal Kombat or Assassin's Creed or Battlefield or Call of Duty or Madden or NBA2K or anything else, then we can't justifiably look the other way at Metal Gear Solid V, especially when the implementation is (essentially) the same as other games (or might be worse, depending on how FOB mode really works). And this is after Konami made us pay $30(!) for Ground Zeroes AND Devil's Third will still be a free-to-play game on PC.

@lunchbox2042: Thing is, even if this was a great game, I don't think it would have convinced anyone. That's not WiiU hate (I have one and like it), it's just that people don't get WiiUs to play violent action games. There's several great action games on every other system.

I mean, this was like putting nachos on the menu at a Chinese restaurant.

And now we find out they aren't even good nachos.

Fiiiiiirst!

Edit: Not first at all. Damn you pending comments!

As a running gag, me and my friend would call this game '' Devil's Turd'' a couple of years ago when it was first shown. Even back when it looked like a Ninja Gaiden-esque action game with ninjas bearing katanas and rifles. Never I would have believed this game would plummet even lower than the expectations they set years ago.
