It's up to individual who is already wired a certain way. Sometimes I play an arcade-y action game and go "Cooooool!" Sometimes I play a game focused on the knit and grit of the real world and reflect on the horrible nature of it all. It depends on the themes the game chooses to explore. Underplaying it could still give the impression that death and violence is no big deal. Again, it's up to the individual.
I'm glad they're stressing how this is the new stuff and the old is still in place. I'm so skeptical since every new iteration of my horror favs, Silent Hill and Resident Evil, are crappy. Dead Space was the breathe of fresh air I wasn't expecting it to be and Dead Space 2 quelled my skepticism, so here's hoping 3 can too.
