My nephew is 12 years old and the very definition of a casual gamer. To him, Fifa, Cod, and Fortnite defines gaming and everything else is just background noise. This past Sunday I asked him what games he wanted for his XBOX (1S) and PS4 (slim.) His response was surprising to me. Not because he listed a bunch of multiplats but because at he end he added a caveat. He asked if I could get the PS4 versions. When I asked him why his response, verbatim, was
"Because XBOX has no games"
It shocked me to the point I had him say it again just to clarify that I heard him right the first time. The problem is my nephew has never visited a gaming forum. He isn't allowed to use social media and so I know he doesn't follow any gaming personality. I'd bet my home that if you asked him who Phil Spencer, Sean Layden, Naughty Dog, 343, or Rare is he wouldn't be able to tell you.
And it got me wondering if the gaming narrative my 12 year old nephew believes is symptomatic of a broader issue. I mean outside of the gaming community that frequents forums, the stark reality is that for 3 years and 6 months, XB hasn't introduced a new AAA exclusive ip. If you don't follow XBOX on social media, if you don't hear about and/or care about "What Phil Spencer said" yesterday/today on twitter...
If your strictly a gamer (casual or otherwise) who judges a system on what that system delivers as a whole, then the past few years have been bleak for XBOX. Buying new studios doesn't address the deficit of mind share XB is fighting when it comes to it's console.
And while I'm certain that @E3 2019 XB will bring something new to the forefront I also recognize that that by then, that will be 4 years. 4 full years since the introduction of your last new AAA exclusive ip is a tectonic sized crater in any potential momentum. And so when I read these forums the suggestion that somehow next gen is a fresh start and clean slate for both consoles I have to wonder if the person is aware of the broader narrative. Because in reality...
Back Compat
Phil Spencer's daily PR
Game Pass
the better Spec machine
etc etc Are all available now and still the XBOX hasn't won an NPD in it's strongest market for more than 2 years (notice see the correlation?) And I believe that a lot of people who own both consoles or maybe just an XBOX will switch to PS5 next gen due to a lack of compelling software coupled with a frustration with how poorly the console has performed as a device that missed it's most important USP. Games.
