Mine started doing that a while back. It would freeze after a while. Then I got this really weird graphics glitch(or whatever you call it). It looked like I was looking at the Matrix. All this bight green snow all over the screen. Never got the ring of death but I hade to send it in. MS said they have never seen this before and sent me a new 360. It was pretty trippy. I could still play games but it was in Matrix code.

Some people on this site are A#%es. Good choice on buying a 360. If you can't afford a game yet so be it. There are a lot of good games out there. Gears is O.K. in my opinion. Not alot of replay value for me at least. I just traded it in for Twilight Princess because I just got a Wii and didn't play Gears no more. (Just my opinion, not everybody elses.) If you are on a fixed income (not welfare like someone else posted. Disabliaty is not welfare)then I would rent a few games first before I would buy one. I would not want to spend $60 on I game I didn't like. As for the high speed question, If you are posting on this site, are you on dial up?????

mine was under warranty and I still had to provide my own box.  It was nothing, went to fedex,  started talking to the guy behind the counter about a bunch of stupid s***.  Then in the end I checked my reciept and no chrge for the box.

Just flat out tell them you need a repair.  Don't let them tell you otherwise.  If your system isn't working properly, you deserve to get it repaired.  No questions asked.  My 360 died a week ago.  Started getting a blank screen but could hear the sound?  I just got the e-mail saying it is on its way back.
