It's known as a solar prominence, which contains cooler, denser plasma than the surrounding corona.

Does anyone here watch the show Comic Book Men? if not you should treat yourself and start. One of my favourite shows. Never fails to make me laugh.

I haven't started the new season, but I've watched all previous episodes. I'm not much of a comic book fan, but I still find it a pretty funny show. My only gripe is that they're always too hard on poor ol' Ming!

Hey mj, how is Sonic? Your screenshots on Miiverse make it look pretty cool

It's a really good game. It borrows quite a bit of its level design from Super Mario Galaxy, but it works surprisingly well. Most of the time, it's a brilliant game that looks good and handles well. However, there are a few frustrating levels and I found the power-ups (recycled from Sonic Colours) to be implemented poorly.

If you enjoyed the recent Sonic games, I think you'll like this one as well.

@mjc I would say that is a fair thing to question when someone is getting into this.

Are you talking about the comic? I'm always careful to ensure students don't take analogies seriously and they're always welcome to ask questions. However, it's frustrating to see some proclaim their expertise with comments such as "black holes are all hype and shouldn't be taught anymore" and "Black holes are a myth so general relativity is invalid" before they even have a basic grasp on the fundamental physics.

You remind me of my smart-arse astronomy students. I usually counter with this image:

I got Montana, which is an ocean away. I'll have to add it to the vacation list when I travel to the US and see for myself.

In case anybody didn't read the link (which judging from the comments appears to be the case) they're talking about mimicking the properties of a black whole simply with light on a table top device which was being designed when weritten, forget making an astronomy / cosmology argument. Anyhow, this article is like 4 years old, I'm guessing they never finished their device.

I guess you didn't read my comments :P Here's a link to a recent paper about the device and the results of its experimental demonstration.

Can you please explain what you're talking about?

First up, you suggest EM radiation gets stuck at the event horizon, yet somehow we can observe it. Second, you link to an old article about a theoretical device that could replicate the effects of a black hole to harvest solar energy and it somehow supports your claim "black holes are electromagnetic nothing more". Finally, you say the whole thing is hype and shouldn't be taught anymore.

What...the...f?
