It depends on the type of song. Average lyrics are fine as long as the song/melody/instrumentation is strong. Really good lyrics can sometimes help an otherwise unremarkable song. The only time lyrics can really negatively impact my opinion of a song is when they're really god-awful or trying way too hard to be super deep and profound or edgy, but they're really just trite and cringey. Most EDM gets a free pass from me. The lyrics to Daft Punk's "Around The World" are literally "Around the world" repeated 144 times, but I freakin' love that song and think it's brilliant.
IDW Transformers. All my favourite characters from my childhood far more fleshed out (for lack of a better term) and awesome storylines full of action, brutality, character development, humour, and emotional feels. So many feels.
They sound pretty similar so it should work out just fine. My understanding is that Axl is only joining them to finish up their tour since Brian Johnson has been ordered by his doctor to stop performing live or else he'll lose his hearing. He's not going to become their new permanent lead singer or anything.
